    JOhn, I rarely post, but I have been reading your blog since before Lily. And I remember when she came into your life. And I remember thinking that someday you would really grieve for her because you love her so much. I have lost three dogs so far. My pug died of being a pug–collapsed lung My Blackie died of heart disease. My little Izzy, died of congestive heart failure. My German Shepard was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. She is on steriods and is doing amazingly well. We are grateful every day that she is still with us.

    I wish I could say something that woudl take the pain away. But the only thing I can say is that we all love you and those of us who have animals knwo what you are feeling. My love to Lily and I hope her meds help her and I hope you will have some more time together.

    Nothing in a pet owner’s life feels as bad as a “your dog is very sick” diagnosis. The Original Lee household remembers the gut punch when Lucky was diagnosed with liver cancer a little over a year ago.     I think the degree to which a human attaches to their domestic animals is a marker for their humanity and ability to empathize with the precious gift of life. It is not just cats and dogs, I have been watching a lot of videos lately on raising chickens, and coats, and cattle. One of the warnings that people giving advice give is to beware, even with chickens you can form an “attachment”, you become so fond of your animals, that the idea of killing them and eating them becomes a problem. Seriously, we want to do do another grand tour, sail to England, tour a few weeks, and sail back, before we get too old and feeble to do it. But what is our biggest worry? Our three cats. What to do with them for five or six weeks? And of course, for those of you unfamiliar with Tom T. Hall, you should check out his famous song about the aging, ill farmer: “Who’s Gonna Feed them Hogs?” Easy to find on YouTube.

    I think our ability to love and care for our animals is a marker for what Lincoln called “the better angels of our nature.”

    I know you miss Lily and she will be missing you, but I am comforted by the fact that your vet/friend and everyone at the vet clinic surely loves you and Lily, so she will be getting some serious TLC while in their care.
