Give Cohen this much: Unlike the 30-something MRAs fulminating on Reddit, he’s actually old enough to remember when white men did own the world. Maybe they can adopt him as their Angry Shouty Granpa, once the current Oval Office Occupant has been carted off. Or maybe they’ll look at him, and realize how ridiculous their Very Heartfelt Grievances really are! (I kid, I kid… )

I know lots of men who think like this maybe once they see it written out they’ll finally find it embarrassing https://t.co/r1H2is1zY6

Psst: "We passed you over because we needed a woman" is very very often BS that bosses tell a guy because it saves face and he'll believe it and it feeds this bogus story of male victimhood. pic.twitter.com/9gvMpX61mf

"The loss of privilege feels like persecution" really is the skeleton key to our ridiculous historical era.

White guy BJ jackals, don’t be wounded — consider this a little Wednesday evening gift. You can look at this and remind yourself, Well, I may not be totally woke, but at least I’m not Richard Cohen.

Guys, I've been hearing this for a while, but I don't get it. Assuming you're talking about white privilege…what white privilege has actually been lost in recent decades? Was white privilege actually any lower in 2016 as compared with, say, 1986??

I think it was Jamelle Bouie who tweeted yesterday that he had honestly forgotten that Cohen still had a column. I suspect there’s some people who work for the Post who have thought the same thing. Let’s have a brief review

    * In 1998, Cohen was involved in a dispute with editorial aide Devon Spurgeon that was ultimately mediated by Washington Post management.[7] Cohen reportedly asked Spurgeon questions about “casual sex”, told her to “stand up and turn around”, and gave her the “silent treatment” for three weeks.[7] Cohen contended that “it was a personality dispute at an office, but it had nothing to do with sexual harassment as the term applies today”.[7] Post management concluded that Spurgeon had been subjected to a “hostile working environment” but not to “sexual harassment” and that Cohen was guilty of “inappropriate behavior”.[7]
    * Cohen wrote a column in 1986 which argued owners of jewelry stores were right to refuse to allow entry to young black men because of a fear of crime. This column led to the Washington Post’s having to apologize.[19]
    * Following the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the shooting of Trayvon Martin in July 2013, Cohen wrote “a controversial column in which he defends George Zimmerman’s suspicion of Travyon Martin and calls on politicians to acknowledge that a disproportionate amount of crimes are committed by black males”.[19] The column went on to say that Cohen “can understand why Zimmerman was suspicious and why he thought Martin was wearing a uniform we all recognize;” in any case, he also points out that “What I’m trying to deal with is, I’m trying to remove this fear from racism. I don’t think it’s racism to say, ‘this person looks like a menace,'” he explained. …Towards the end of the column, Cohen calls Trayvon Martin “a young man understandably suspected because he was black”.[20]

Is his column still listed under the “From the Left” or some such on the WaPo’s opinion site?

I worked with a guy once who liked to complain about affirmative action, and how white guys couldn’t get a break, lost out on jobs to minorities and women….

I asked him how many jobs he’d lost out on. None, he says. He couldn’t explain why exactly he was mad about it.

He also liked to bitch about people cheating on welfare and food stamps, and then proceeded to tell me how while he was living with and supporting his soon to be wife he had her get food stamps and assistance for their baby.

Bet you can’t guess where he lies on the political spectrum.

I liked Nora Ephron a lot when I was in my twenties and thirties, when she was a columnist; then over the years it faded to just like. But one thing about her I found completely inexplicable was her deep and lifelong friendship with Richard Cohen. She seemed smarter than that but I guess she wasn’t.

Oh man, Republicans are panicking everywhere. You’re up, Arizona.

Arizona Republicans appeared to back off their efforts Wednesday to rig the rules to keep Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) seat in their column, pulling from the state Senate floor a proposed change in state law that would have guaranteed a lengthy appointment from the GOP governor should the ailing senator leave office in the coming weeks.

Statehouse Republicans seemingly tried to pull a fast one on their Democratic counterparts, quietly adding an emergency clause to a bipartisan bill to clean up special election laws in the state that would have handed Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) assurance that he’d get to appoint a replacement for McCain through 2020.

There’s a bit of disagreement between experts on current state law. There’s general consensus that if McCain’s seat comes open before June 1, a special election will be held to fill his seat this fall — greatly improving Democrats’ chances of winning at least one Senate seat and cracking the door for them to win both. If McCain’s seat doesn’t come open until after June 1, most (but not all) experts think that means Ducey would get to appoint a replacement for more than two years.

@Uncle Cosmo: It is a clock drive. You allign it with the North Star and it rotates. So the stars turn out without any trails with a long exposure, however the foreground gets the movement. That’s why you have to shoot two shots and then combine them in Photoshop.

ETA: This gizmo does have a 1/2 setting so you trade off a bit of star trails for a better foreground, it might work if you’re just doubling or tripling a fixed shot. Doesn’t work for a long/low ISO exposure. Yes, I tried that this morning.

In the same article Cohen says he worked for an insurance company, prior to WaPi, that didn’t hire blacks or Hispanics as part of company policy.

My first real job was with the New York office of a national insurance company. Sexual harassment was a problem, for sure. But the term did not yet exist and the problem was not formally recognized.

We had no acknowledged diversity problem, either. In fact, we simply had no diversity. African Americans, Hispanics — you name it: None. Our office was exclusively white and not by accident. When I asked my boss why we had no black employees, he told me directly that it was his policy not to hire any.

President Moon of South Korea was very generous when he said ‘If it weren’t for Donald Trump, the Olympics would have been a total failure.’ It was my involvement, and the involvement of our great country, that made the Olympics a very successful Olympics. If you look at ticket sales prior to what took place with respect to North Korea, it was going to be a big problem. And it turned out to be a very successful Olympics.

Urgh. a) I doubt very much that Moon said that. b) I’m so sure that the Olympics weren’t selling any tickets. //s

This is why I like REASONABLE LENGTH term limits for all national offices, including USSC. Has to be long enough to allow a career in any of the branches but it shouldn’t effectively end up a lifetime sinecure or be a lifetime appointment. A lifetime appointment might have been OK when we didn’t have a lot of qualified judges and a lifespan was on average, shorter. Putting some one on the court at 40 and having them server 45 or more years is not in the best interest of a democracy. Look up how long some have serve in congress. It means that a lot of decisions are made by old farts. And as an old fart I’ve seen too many of my fellow members become extremely selfish as they age or at least more open about it than they were.
Think about this President Obama was 47 when sworn in, President Clinton was 46 and President Kennedy was 43. The best presidents in my lifetime were in their 40s, the absolute worst is the oldest at swearing (and yes I did plenty of that!) in is the current squatter, drumpf.

I know I’m late to this post, but I just want to make a point: for the first 30 years or so of Richard Cohen’s life he wasn’t considered white because he’s Jewish. And in the US Jewish is as much an ethno-national category as it is a religious one. And white has nothing to do with one’s skin color or even ethno-national origins, it’s a socio-cultural signifier. So it’s only been since the early 1970s when Jews finally crossed the threshold into being white. And Cohen needs to understand that the people that graciously extended that courtesy can just as easily take it away tomorrow.

    Without comment except a smile:
Trump’s Lawyer Forgets to Pretend He’s Innocent, Also Compares Him to Mobster

Not all of Trump’s supporters feel so confident that Cohen will respect the omerta. In a conversation with Trump last Friday, Jay Goldberg, one of Trump’s lawyers, warned the president, “Michael will never stand up [for you]” if charged by the government, according to the Wall Street Journal. But why would Trump have anything to worry about, unless… Trump committed a crime that Cohen knows about?
In an interview with the Journal, Goldberg elucidated his concerns about Cohen’s loyalty and the devastating impact it would have if he cooperated with the government. “The mob was broken by Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano caving in out of the prospect of a jail sentence,” Goldberg explained.

Similar to the pathway for a lot of ethnic Catholics like Italian-Americans, Spanish-Americans, and Portuguese-Americans, as well as non Catholic ethnics like Greek Americans to be considered white.
