Had a nap, and was sitting there feeling better but still sorry for myself, and Steve came in and started bitching up a storm for dinner, and it’s a good reminder that life is still going to go on. I’m going to inhale a gut bomb pizza (I haven’t really eaten the last couple of days) and watch some tube and maybe break it to Thurston how much pressure he is now under to become a good dog.
This always cheers me up:
And yes, Thurston and Rosie are getting all the pizza crusts.

Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et al.)
Hey, look, if there’s ever a time to feel sorry for yourself, this is it. Don’t feel bad about wallowing. It’s something we all have to do sometimes. I know the feeling of taking a dog you think is healthy into the vets because something is wrong but you don’t think it’s anything to worry about, anything they can’t heal, and then you get the news that your dog is dying and you have to make your mind up on the spot to do the best thing for the dog, which is the worst thing for you. I did that a little over three years ago. Don’t feel like you have to be strong. You don’t you need to be weak and helpless, because that’s what any of us are at times like this. Just go with what you feel. And don’t feel bad about it.
Cermet
Very glad to hear you are getting more on your feet. Life does go on and that is important to remember others still depend upon you.

It may be little comfort, but you were heartbroken and thought Tunch was irreplaceable and along came Steve who has proven to be quite the wonderful cat. Doesn’t ease the pain, but as you said, life must go on and you never know what tomorrow may bring.

I had to say goodbye to both of my beloved dogs last year: Simon, a Border Collie mix; and Sundae, a small mixed terrier. Simon was 13 and Sundae was 17. Weeks before Simon died, I adopted Milo, a small mixed terrier, from a foster person. He had such big paws to fill. I thought at the time, “You better be awesome.” I still miss Simon and Sundae, but Milo has been a total joy and has helped us immensely. It was just good fortune that we found him when we did. All that is to say I understand the grief and terrible necessity to say goodbye to someone who has been there everyday and always happy to see you.

So sorry, John. Strikes me that this is a longer version of what happened to Walter. You found an animal that needed you, provided the best home and love that that critter had ever had, and eased their end. What else can we do for our friends? Lily got more time than Walter did, but both animals were worth it and paid back with all the love they could. Thank you for making her life wonderful.

Oh dear John
So, so sorry about the lovely Lily. Try to remember the sad situation spent her early life in and how you gave her the best life a dog can hope for- a happy pack and loving person. It sounds like she is slipping off into a happy dream and not in pain. The last kindness we can give our pets is a painless end wrapped in our arms.
I’m sure you will muscle through this and be there for the rest of the pack. You have a tender heart and sometimes that sucks

OK, so this was fun as shit.
A client of mine had been “invited” to invest six figures in a Vegas-based wedding concept. There’s some things I know nothing about, but some I know a lot about, and included in that category are destination weddings, pricing for destination weddings, tour vendors, how brokered travel services work and how to do due diligence on ferreting out the background on potential con jobs.
My client is north of 65, and spent several weeks treating his lime disease at a clinic out West that uses magnets and gravity force – it was, of course, not an insurance-covered service. He was approached by someone who may or may not have been the principal owner of the facility and befriended. He got to meet the local Mormon bishop, and was well treated by the clinic medical director (who assured him he’d died for 3.5 minutes before they heroically resurrected him). Anyway, this new friend had a wonderful investment idea to run a giant luxury Hummer up and down the Vegas strip, decked out like a Cinderella carriage in the open middle. It was going to be about $800 a trip, and the pitch to my guy figured about 210 of these affairs per month, which I know to be total bullshit.
My guy only wanted me to look at the terms of an agreement. I’m a fuckton more thorough. The spreadsheet anticipating revenue was wildly optimistic, but the masterstroke of con jobs was in the proposed expenses – it made zero sense, and fluctuated wildly in odd places. I told my client.
This afternoon, according to my instructions, I got to talk to a con man from Utah and Las Vegas on his Orlando area code cellphone (I wasn’t surprised at all the diversions). Prick got so nervous and stammery on my questions – and I’m a total fucking asshole when I’m on point and feeling it – that he decided that the “investment” offer he pitched isn’t the right fit for my client. He withdrew it.
My take is that there’s a 90% chance that he’s a con man, 10% chance that he’s just a reckless idiot. In any event, it was a beautiful afternoon – I love shitting on people like that.

I heard a great story about her recently from some kayaking friends. She owned Ragged Island off the coast of Maine and went there in the summers to recuperate from her anxiety. In the sandy bottomed water you still find lobster traps even though it is not a good place for lobsters. The lobstermen still drop their traps there like their fathers and grandfathers did. Well it turns out the lobsterman in those days liked to pretend they were working because she would sunbathe nude and saunter around aware of the attention but pretending she didn’t notice.
I find it so funny that they still lobster there as a tribute. It’s a gorgeous island. I’ve kayaked out there but haven’t stripped naked there – yet. ?

Cuban velorios are a combination of drama, comedy, and banquet. When my cousin Felix passed, his sister’s company sent over a full Cuban banquet to the funeral home. The “older folk” sat in the inner salon with the casket. The “younger generation” sat in the large reception room and told Felix stories, of which there were many and mostly absolutely hysterically funny. I think the only thing we didn’t do was play his favorite disco music, and that was only because there were other viewings going on in other parts of the building.People came and went, had dinner, told stories, and cried a little. I always expect grieving to have a large dash of laughter mixed in.
Maybe in a few days, to ease your heart, you’ll revisit your favorite Lily stories and let us share our memories.

@White & Gold Purgatorian: WRT Rudy joining the legal team: I was wondering if that is because he feels he is clean of any tapes/sludge emanating from the Michael Cohen raid, or if he’s joining so he can monitor what they have on him, too. Or even protect those shitwads in the NYC FBI office.

But this is a crew that sent out final, official versions of written material that included “Normay” and “State of the Uniom,” and that fucked up Barbara Bush’s date of death. And now Trump’s newest lawyer can’t even spell his own name on his own website?

And they’d tell me when I picked him up, “Never, ever bring him back here!” So I had to learn. He liked being trimmed, did not like having it done. That was just an example.

Wouldn’t be a wake without random reminiscences.
1) I’m pretty sure I saw Little Feat on this tour. It was either ’77 or maybe ’76, at the Warner Theater in Wash, D.C.. I went all three nights. Good times.
2) I remember the thread when you named Lily. People were tossing out all kinds of goofy names for that dog, but you came up with Lily, and immediately liked it. Or did someone else suggest it? Anyhow, you knew right away. It was a good thread.
3) And of course who can forget the night that you broke your shoulder while carrying Lily? You would do anything to spare that dog a little pain–even bust up your own scapula. Jesus, that whole thing was hard to read. Funny but awful, and awful but funny, like so many excellent threads here.

You put her in her kennel in the other room, and she cries, so you bring the kennel into the bedroom. And she cries, so you let her out to sleep on the floor, then up on the foot of the bed. Then between you and your partner on top of the covers. Then under the covers. Then one night you roll over and she bites you, because you have ceded to her the completely dominant position. I never trust that “butter wouldn’t melt” thing.

I try to make condolence posts about the person I’m responding to, but it’s hard to say much more than how sorry I am. (This comment has gotten away from me, obviously.)
@Lizzy L: Oh no, I’m so sorry for your loss too. I completely understand why you’re skipping the comments. I’ve read most of them – somehow I think I was ready to cry a lot once more – and I did today. I’m ok with that. It really is better to have loved them and cared for them, even if losing them is the price.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
(Eyes the 17-year-old black cat. She eyes me back.)
Me: I’m still not a cat person, you know. She’s the cat person. I just live here.
Cat: (walking up my chest to sit on the back of the chair and purr up a storm). A cat person is whoever I say is a cat person. Now don’t move.

So sad about Lily. Such a beautiful looking dig, too. We have a complete goofball rescue dog (almost 5 yo and part boxer, part pointer). Also have a 20 year old cat who wandered in as a kitten Jakarta and decided to adopt us. Pretty grouchy and arthritic these days but he’s pretty healthy still.
I’m sure your pain will eventually ease with the rest of your colorful menagerie to comfort you.. Meanwhile, take care.
