Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

No Justins, No Peace

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Let’s finish the job.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Everybody saw this coming.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Morning Pupdate

by John Cole|  April 24, 20188:53 am| 50 Comments

This post is in: Dog Blogging

FacebookTweetEmail

She got a solid seven hours sleep, had breakfast, her morning meds, and I actually lost sight of her for about twenty minutes and when I realized she was not in the same room with me, I looked out the window and she was in the backyard pooping, peeing, sniffing, with her tail up and just prancing about. Being a dog, basically.

When I see her just lying there, being relaxed and comfortable, I can just feel my blood pressure dropping.

Pictures of Lily – I haven’t thought of that song in a long time. Also, we need a Lily photo book for blood pressure maintenance.

So it looks like she’s not having side effects from chemo? That is awesome. This post makes me really happy.

I’ve probably posted this link before, but I love it so I’m doing it again- in 1940, playwright Eugene O’Neill and his wife lost their dog to old age, and her grief was so intense that O’Neill wrote this lovely tribute to comfort her- I don’t think of him as having been a particularly kind person, and the humor and warmth and sweetness in this piece is really moving. And, it’s nice to be reminded that humanity’s intense love for our animal companions is not all that new- from the great writers of the American Theatre to those of us who do most of our writing posting comments on blogs, we all adore our pets.

You know, that thing you said about your blood pressure dropping may not even be metaphorical. I went Stateside and spent some quality time with my sweetheart around Easter, and at one point I did my daily BP check while we were snuggled together, and my pressure was significantly lower. Wouldn’t surprise me if Lily has a similar effect on you.

@Nicole: @Nicole: oh, my Lord, now I am so teary I can hardly see. I’m with you, I never would have imagined Eugene O’Neill writing something like that about a dog.

BTW, I did read your comment about your horse dying. We just buried our steadiest hunt horse earlier ths year – an Irish sport horse mare named Shamrock. She had been ailing, fell and broke her shoulder and had to be euthanized. One of those horses i just loved, she made me feel so safe on her back even when she was acting squirrelly.

Such good news! She will be fine, I just know it.

Yesterday, I remembered that my nephew and his girlfriend’s doggy had mysteriously came down with a similar illness, a few years back. He’s a young pittie rescue, always seemed as healthy as the rambunctious horse he acts like. He’s well cared for, lives inside most of the time except for dog park walkies and trips to the mountains. So no one could figure out what could have caused it when they woke up one day to find him vomiting and pooping blood, and barely able to walk.

They took him to the vet who was definitely puzzled. They ran lots of tests, which showed thrombocytopenia, and he got a transfusion, too. They were students, so they didn’t want to order all the expensive testing suggested to make the most accurate diagnosis, but $1200 bucks (via generous donations from family and a Go Fund Me) and a few more visits later, he miraculously went back to normal. That was 2+ years ago, and he’s been healthy ever since.

I keep wondering if this was a temporary, transitory thrombocytopenia caused by an undiagnosed parasitic/bacterial/ viral infection (eg, tick or flea transmitted)–it happens in cats after certain ones. Why not doggo’s too?

Just keep up the hope, John. She’s a little fighter.

    @d58826:

Totally OT but there is a photo of thew two First ladies walking on the WH grounds in stiletto heels. How do they manage not to fall over? :-)

Chronic use of high heals shortens the calf muscles and associated tendons, so they may not be able to walk in anything but stilettos. They might even be able to just balance on the balls of their feet and you’d never know they were walking on a surface like grass. That’s only half snarky; I knew a woman who was in assisted living in her early 70’s only because she had spent her life in these things and could not wear anything but because her calves were so tight. She was in that facility because she had balance troubles and could no longer wear them, and because she couldn’t wear anything less than that, she was in assisted living with no other physical or mental problems but stuck in a wheelchair. High heals are bad for you!

Great to see Lily doing so well. And reduction in BP of pet owners has been known scientifically for a while:

Companion animals may improve heart health by lowering blood pressure and regulating the heart rate during stressful situations. In a 2002 study, researchers measured changes in heart rate and blood pressure among people who had a dog or cat, compared to those who did not, when participants were under stress (performing a timed math task). People with a dog or cat had lower resting heart rates and blood pressure measures at the beginning of the experiment than non-pet owners.

@Bruce K: I noticed that my resting heart rate is noticeably lower when our littlest kitty is dozing on my chest.
