Not only do they enjoy doing a useful job, but they can dash around as much as they want!
And they get to freestyle some high-nitrogen-content fertilizing, while they’re at it…
From GreenMatters:
Last year, forest fires in central Chile wreaked havoc in the El Maule region with more than 100 different wildfires sweeping through the area and destroying over a million acres of forest land. It was the worst wildfire season in the country’s history, taking several lives and created an estimated $333 million of dollars worth of damages. The animals were forced to flee to safer areas.
The job to replant endless acres of forests seemed like a daunting endeavor. That is until three unusual workers took up the task. Six-year-old Das and her two daughters, Olivia and Summer are three Border Collies who have been trained to run through the damaged forests with special backpacks that release native plant seeds. Once they take root, these seeds will help regrow the destroyed area.
It turns out that Border Collies are an ideal breed for this specific type of job. Bounding through miles of forest terrain requires not only speed, intelligence, and endurance, but also a willingness to stay focused and not get distracted by wildlife. Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, so they’re not as likely to run after or hurt other animals in the forest…
This system is also more efficient than having people spread the seeds manually. These speedy canines can race through a forest and cover up to 18 miles a day. Humans, on the other hand, can only cover a few miles each day. These pups can scatter over 20 pounds of seeds, depending on the terrain. While robots or drones might be able to disperse seeds too, dogs aren’t as pricey to handle. Most importantly, they leave a lighter carbon footprint…
For Francisca, bringing trained dogs into the forest made sense. She runs a dog training facility and community called Pewos. While they receive some donations, she and Constanza pay for most of the seeds, supplies, and transportation themselves. Despite the hard work, their labor of love is already paying off…

I waited until this morning to tell my Saturday garden disaster story. Our solid waste department makes compost from sludge and wood chips and sells it for $12 a truckload at the dump. The boss lady was ready for a batch so I dutifully loaded up the pups at 8:45am to make the 20 mile round trip journey. The compost pile was pretty wet and when the guy dumped the frotnloader scoop the bed sunk down over the back wheels so the ass end was almost scoping the ground. I’ve done if before so I just decided to go slow and be careful.
There is a major bike race weekend here with a number of events capped off with the Twilight Criterium held on Saturday evening. I picked up the load and head back to town when I hit a road block on my normal route home. I’ve lived here 32 years but there are still areas of town I’m not totally familiar with so I thought I could pick my way around the area. I went up a drastic hill only to find myself at a dead end with a couple of narrow driveways at the top. I turned in one and backed up and my rear right wheel dropped off the pavement into a hole and basically bottomed out. I tried to rock it but could get not traction in either direction and my tire just spun and smoked. When I got out a couple of neighborhood dudes wandered over and began to assess the situation. They we re pretty buzzed for 9:30 in the morning but they had seen this happen before and were eager to give advice and help. I have USSA roadside assistance so I said “aw man, I appreciate it but I can just call and get a tow truck”. “”Aw hell no, we can get this motherfucker outta here, lets just get a flat rock and put it under the tire and it will pop right out”! Having been stuck many times in my long like of pickup truckin I was pretty sure it wasn’t coming out but they were insistent so I figured “what the hell”. We all rooted around for a bit and someone found a rock so we jammed it in between the tire and the drop off and I gave it a shot. Zip, nada except a smoking tire. Oh, did I mention that the way the truck was tilted to the right that gas started to drip out of the filler??? So I’ve got a smoking rear tire and gas dripping on the ground right in front of it! All this while the pups were in the cab just sleeping away! Well this wasn’t going to work so, between hits off the gin bottle, one of the dudes says Peanut Head down the street has a truck and he’ll come drag me out. They hollered a bunch and this guy finally comes up, surveys the situation and goes back and gets his truck. When he got back we asked if he had a chain a rope and he said “hell no but I have this big extension cord and we can pull it out with it”!! I looked at it and said, “man there is no way that is going to take the weight of this truck full of we compost”! There was no talking these cats out of this so I said fuck it and got to doubling the cord and wrapping it around the bumper bracket. Meanwhile these guys are trying to find somewhere under his truck to secure it and it was funny as hell. They all had different ideas of where it should go and, lying on their backs under the front bumper, they debate raged. And the gas is still dripping. Finally they got the cord secured and the great tow job was ready to proceed. I got back in the cab, lit the engine and P-nut head did the same. We took the slack out of the line, we both gunned it and the extension cord snapped like it was a piece of thread! Of course my tire was smoking again so I decided to get the pups out and set up camp of some nearby steps. I had called USAA and told them I was going to try to get it out myself so I called them back and went through the drill to get help. I sat there for about an hour shooting the shit with these folks when the truck finally made it through all the fucking road blocks and got to me. He tried to just lift the truck out with his forklift type rig and, when that didn’t work, wrapped both front tire with big straps and was able to yank me out. The guys were hanging in their driveway so after I singed I went over and offered them a $20 for trying to help. One dude said “nahhh” but another said “heel yeaaa”! I felt a little funny because I know where the dough was going to go but I felt like it was the right thing to do so I did. And that, boys and girls, I how my garden day went yesterday.

This doesn’t really convey the pickle I was in but it’s all I got.
OzarkHillbilly
Planted a rose bush, and 2 azaleas yesterday. I had to work the beds over pretty good good first with the tiller, and add a bunch of compost. I have had limited success with both in the past here so this time I very carefully selected the locations and prepped the soil to the Nth degree. We’ll see.
Also planted some herbs: 2 rosemary, 2 thyme, 1 oregano. and seeded beds with cilantro and dill. Still need some basil, tarragon, and and and…. something. My sage wintered over and is coming back. Had some parsley pop up on it’s own and found I had no seed for more, so gotta get that too. I also have lavender seed, need to find a spot for that too.
I think we dodged our last chance at a killing frost last night so I am going to put the maters in today. Might even finish tilling the rest of the veggie garden.

Last night went down to 26°, so at 11pm I was out covering the newly planted replacement roses, again. Looks like the last overnight frost for a while though. Today I have to plant the strawberry grow bags and two black current bushes. My indoor seed starting off well but I lost most to damp off when the tray got overheated a few sunny days. It’s ok because I was just using up old seed anyway. Hoping the hard frost didn’t total the daffodils that just started blooming.

I don’t buy compost. Vermiculum wilt is common here, and both the commercial and munincipal compost is laden with it, instead of garbaging infected plants, people take them to the recycling center, and composting doesn’t kill the virus.
I make my own compost from manure, last years garden debris, and several large compost bins.
