Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

May Day!

I’m working on another post, to come shortly, but hey, it’s May Day, and I figure we could all use more thread, produced in the true socialist fashion: from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.

So, as we comment below, let us all join in song, appropriate to the day!

This thread, it is all of ours!

So appropriate that large portions of the US are under a red flag warning today. Watch out for people trying to seize the means of production.

First day fishing for me yesterday (since November), therefore first real day of spring. Got about a dozen schoolie stripers, 1-3lbs. Wish there was a slot limit; that’s a good eating size. 30 inch limit just means people get to remove the more genetically successful fish.

Dandelions/tulips=fish are here (SE New England at least)

I lived in Oklahoma for a year about 45 years ago and it’s the only place I knew of that celebrated May day in the traditional pagan spring celebration with teaching us the folk dance around the May pole. This was in public elementary school in Tulsa. Somehow that doesn’t seem to fit with the fundamentalist Christian outlook I hear they have now. Certainly they didn’t teach belief, just as fun history, but the whole school made garlands and we had a dance outside in very nice weather. Some things seem to have regressed.

@rikyrah: This is the question getting the most attention

“What knowledge did you have of any outreach by your campaign, including by Paul Manafort, to Russia about potential assistance to the campaign?”

My personal favorite has to do with Jared Kushner, setting up a back channel to Russia during the transition. There’s a sealed indictment and speculation is that it relates to the Mueller investigation. Maybe it’s for Jared

I’m living in Fl. now, some excellent fishing here, however I miss North East fishing. I was born and raised on the North Shore of L.I., and honed my chops on the wrecks, reefs and shoals from the city line to South of Montauk.
    Good times.

Cops called to UWS apartment for ‘burglary in progress’ but find black tenant, former White House staffer moving in
    POSTED 6:33 PM, APRIL 30, 2018,
    BY ANDREW RAMOS,

UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan — It was an unsolicited homecoming that left Bronx native Darren Martin unsettled.

After spending several years working on Capitol Hill and in the White House with the Obama Administration, Martin recently made the move back to New York, getting a job with the city and finding a unit in a 5-story walk-up on the Upper West Side.

On moving day this past Friday, Martin got an unexpected visit from the NYPD.

“I’m in my apartment but you know – you can’t go nowhere without the cops following me,” Martin said during the encounter live streamed via Instagram.

Turns out, someone called 911 to report a “burglary in progress” and the suspect was the building’s brand new tenant – Martin.

“Somebody called the cops on me in my own building,” he told viewers who were tuning in to watch the live video. “About how many are ya’ll? About six of ya’ll showed up, rolled up on me.”

He has a packed work schedule and that was the only time he had to move into the building.

“I didn’t really think anyone was going to call the cops on me because I mean – I was moving into the building.”

@kindness: Baby Blues are a lot of fun! They also make great bait for Doormat Fluke.
    I also love California fishing.
A Half Moon Bay party boat, The Queen of Hearts, specializes in shallow water Rockfishing. Light tackle, very simple rigs = a whole lot of fun!

@raven: Not surf. Nice wadeable cove with a brackish pond above, two pipes under the road. As the tide goes out through the pipes the pods stack up feeding on whatever washes through the pipes (kayakers can fit through them except maybe on very highest tide) Now until about 7/4. Some years they want incoming tide; not lately. Very occasional keeper (better luck for them at night). Just fun, 8lb test light medium rods.
I like whole fish grilled/broiled, don’t want to deal with 30+ inch for table. (Sure as he’ll don’t mind catching them of course.)

@raven: Hey Raven, this is the trouble with local names.
In the Northeast, Snappers is the term for young-of-the-year Bluefish.
The Blues spawn in the spring. The fry grow rapidly and by late Summer, they are terrorizing the small bait fish. By fall they are 6″-10″ and are a ball to catch. The traditional method is a cane pole, long shank hook and a Silverside bait. They are also a blast on light tackle, casting a small spoon.

We’re working on the old (1922) house up in the canyon, now we have an engineering dispute between the county and the guy who drew the plans for our new retaining wall, construction has stopped until a resolution magically appears. In the meantime we took down a dead California Oak and a dead Pepper tree. The Pepper was around 60 feet high, one of the top sections came down, rolled down the hill and smashed our little bridge over the wash to the lower patio, it had to be rebuilt, that took a day, Each one of the trees took around 8 hours to take down and cut into movable pieces. The old Pepper was 40 inches in diameter for over 25 feet of the trunk. We now have all the huge sections of trunk waiting to be split. It took two trailer loads to haul the skinny branches away to the dump. I am too old for this shit! Then last night the compressor on the fridge started to howl, had to kill it at the breaker box and cook dinner by camping lantern. Waiting for the fridge guy now. Jesus what a nightmare.

About that song, “The Internationale”: It’s awfully partisan, and doesn’t take into account the feelings of the privileged! How do you think they feel when they go home to their chilluns, and have to explain words like “oppression” and whether Daddy is considered a tyrant? So unfair!
