Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

This really is a full service blog.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I really should read my own blog.

Primaries Thread

West by god Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and Indiana are holding primaries today.

West by god Virginia – Congressional and state legislature

Ohio – Congressional, governor, attorney general, and state legislature

North Carolina – Congressional and state legislature

Indiana – Congressional and state legislature

Yes I know the links are to the very unfavorite New York Times. I like their election coverage when they don’t use those damn needles. Sue me.

Looks like Blankenship and Kucenich are doing badly. How are things in your district?

the first part of this is so depressing I can’t laugh the at the second part

    ABC News @ ABC
West Virginia voter who says he lost three cousins in mine disaster tied to Don Blankenship tells @TomLlamasABC he’s voting for the coal baron anyway.

“I want an honest crook, and that’s Blankenship.”

NYT and various other outlets have called OH-GOV-D for Cordray, so I guess Kucinich can go back to hunting UFOs or whatever.

Coal-miner-killer is running in third place so far in WV-SEN-R, but it’s early enough that who knows?

From the looks of it, Blankenship isn’t going to make it. Harder for us, sure, but in all honesty it would not be a good sign if that clown was the GOP nominee.

As for Kucinich, fuck him. Glad that Cordray made him pound sand. Does anyone from Ohio think Cordray can beat DeWine in the general? I know DeWine was weak sauce back in 2006 when Sherrod Brown booted him, but no idea if he’s any better now.

In NE Ohio. Several local townships are currently voting no on their road levies and school levies. Issue One is currently winning by 76%. Cordray is winning by 63%.

Question: are absentee ballots counted last or first?

It's a fraught night for Republican members of the House. Two have lost and one is down on the Senate side. And in #NC09, Rep. Pittenger has a serious race on his hands. Pittenger needs a good margin in Mecklenburg. This @theobserver map is very helpful. https://t.co/zf4g2Rs21z

@Baud: Speaking of media horse shit race, CNN’s breathless fan boying over Kucinich:
    https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/08/politics/cordray-kucinich-ohio-progressives-already-won/index.html

I voted for Cordray and 3 local issues, one of which will raise my property taxes but it’s for the Hamilton County Library, which is one of the best in the country.
So bummed that there was no Dem candidate for State Rep. They’ve gerrymandered SW Ohio like a labyrinth Lucifer designed. I believe the new procedure for drawing state legislative districts will kick in so maybe a Dem will have a chance again. The old District was represented by two excellent Democrats.

Canada primary campaigns are as crazy as in the US. From the Guardian.

Doug Ford – the frontrunner in the race to become premier of Canada’s most populous province – has admitted that hired actors posed as supporters ahead of a high-profile debate, but denied his campaign was responsible for recruiting them.

“A local candidate made a decision to engage a casting agency. This was unnecessary and a mistake. It will not happen again,” said Ford’s spokeswoman, Melissa Lantsman, in a statement on Tuesday.

Just finished my ballot for the Oregon May 15 primary. I’ll drop it of at the library in the next couple days.

Four contested judge races on my ballot. I find voting for judges kinda weird. Also DA’s, sheriffs all the law enforcement positions. While considering my choices this afternoon I decided lower court judges should be nominated by the executive branch and confirmed by legislative branch. This is the way it works at the federal level. My strange idea is that appellate judges all the way up to the Supremes should be decided by the sitting judges.

@Kathleen: In Cuyahoga county in particular, there’s a lot of contention between the official party and “progressive” orgs this cycle. I didn’t find myself universally behind either of their endorsements. FWIW, the Cleveland Plain Dealer (most decidedly not a progressive publication) endorsed Kucinich. I’m not sure if its anti-dem, pro-horserace (DeWine/Taylor also got a lot more hype than seems to have been warranted), or just overestimation of Our Revolution influence.

I was pleasantly surprised that Bernie didn’t personally endorse to counter Warren/Cordray, even if our rev did.

I’m also thrilled DeWine beat his opponent BIG – she was running as a Trumpista and is awful. I don’t like DeWine at all but Mary Taylor is significantly worse. I think her defeat is a good sign the Trump “magic” may be fading on the right.

@Major Major Major Major: I caught this today. Still in the style section

Talman wasn’t having it. “Vindicated to who?” he repeated. And what was my answer? Vindicated to history, perhaps. But whose history? After chatting with Talman, I could read the headline his way, too.

As we continued to talk, I realized that two more words were heavily influencing how Talman thought about the story: Donald Trump. Talman voted for Hillary Clinton. He liked Bernie Sanders a lot but considered him “flawed,” “a one-trick pony.” He thought Clinton had her own flaws, but nothing compared with Trump’s. Talman’s strong feelings about Trump made “vindication” hard for him to concede to Kucinich. After losing his seat in Congress, after all, Kucinich had become a Fox News commentator. He had used that platform to express support for certain positions advocated by Trump. To Talman, this was unpardonable. “Trump is a vile candidate, a vile president, a vile man,” he said. “To have Kucinich backing this monster in any way, it’s really hard to swallow.” My conversation with Talman made me think about how many discussions among friends, colleagues, family members and strangers these days are hijacked by the fundamental question of where we stand on Trump.

A good headline is a bold distillation of what a story will deliver with more detail and nuance. I knew that associating a character like Dennis Kucinich with “vindication” would be provocative, but I thought it was honest, too. And yet, where the headline writers and I detected an elegant argument to be made about an ideological convergence embodied in Kucinich, Talman saw an unwarranted reward for a politician who was soft on Trump — a political apostasy that nothing could vindicate.

So…author gets enough angry comments that a follow-up makes sense; author opines on Trump (unfairly?) being a conversation ender; fin.

And now he’s up against two-bit ratfuck soulless criminal ladder climbing son of a bitch Renacci, a deep-well Dumpster Fire acolyte if ever there was. According to the WV Sec of State’s web page, Blankenship is running a distant third in a six person race. So that’s good. I don’t care about the strategy of the general election, Don Blankenship is a filthy piece of crap who should be serving 29 consecutive manslaughter cases at least.

He wrote memos to his foremen drumming the beat of don’t perform any tasks that interfere with moving coal, meaning safety work, removing loose coal and coal dust from beltways, preventing coal dust at the active faces where coal is being dog out of the mountain, don’t do that work, move coal, that’s all anyone working for me should be doing.

We’ve known how to prevent mine explosions for over a hundred years, and how to prevent Black Lung Disease nearly as long. But it costs a tiny percentage of the cost of operating the mines, so Don and his fellow coal barons don’t want to spend the few cents a ton safety costs, they would rather murder their employees every so often.

I don’t want him thinking he could tweak his message and try again in a couple of years. He should go back to Las Vegas NV where he actually lives and never come back here. And with his sorry third place finish that looks more likely.

He’s despicable. His housekeeper had to sue him for refusing to pay her overtime when he added another (huge) house to her cleaning chores. No hole too low for these guys!

DeWine seems to strike a lot of people of a “reasonable republican” like Rob Portman so it was good that every day the past couple of weeks I saw him express his undying love of Donald Trump, his promise to rip away health care from thousands by eliminating the Medicaid expansion and his demonetization of “drug selling” immigrants in “illegal sanctuary cities”. Kucinich received $20,000 to speak at a London conference of the Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees, an event that critics derided as propaganda for the Assad regime. The CEO of that association is also a board member of the nonprofit Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. (Kucinich is returning the $20,000 fee.)

The candidate has also questioned special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign, saying it had a “high BS quotient.” He serves on an advisory board of the Ron Paul Institute, alongside Lew Rockwell, who ghost-wrote Paul’s infamous newsletter. He has appeared dozens of times on the RT news channel, which is funded by the Russian government. He called President Barack Obama’s decision to bomb Libya in 2011 an “impeachable offense.” And he’s echoed Trump’s concerns about the so-called deep state and praised his inaugural address.

@Platonailedit: Not much excitement in the Dem primary down here in SW Ohio. No one down here considered Kusinich anything more than a crank. Meanwhile there was a ton of money spent by DeWine and Taylor and from an ad standpoint it looked like a toss up. More “excitement” on the GOP side

@Kathleen: I had a 20 minute line…there were a grand total of TWO pollbook/tablet things for 3 precincts with ~3000 eligible voters. Scanned paper ballots here too…statewide? But I like that more than purely electronic.

@Platonailedit: Speculating, but Sen Brown uncontested will keep a few souls out. And many of the races on my ballot today were uncontested. The draw is local issues, and that works for D, R or I. Locally, my poll was doing decent business due to a township rezoning issue. While the vote totals are “an” indicator, there are not “the” indicator. In contrast, as we’ve heard elsewhere, come November it is ALL about turnout.

They seem to be reporting that the nuttiest of the nutty Republicans running in the Senate primary won, Mike Braun. Crazy race with all three of them calling each other liberals and secret Democrats. Braun will face incumbent Blue Dog Donnelley (D) in November. I know a lot of the Indivisible group was talking about crossing over to vote for whichever Republican would be too extreme, no idea how many did.
    Edit, this is IN.

    @PsiFighter37:

If Blankenship had won the nomination, it would have been a horrifying situation for ALL parties involved. Despite the odds of a general election leaning away from a convicted SOB like him, West Virginia overall is skewed towards the conservative mindset to where a guy like Manchin can run as a Democrat but has to run as far Right as possible to stay in office. While whoever wins the GOP nomination will be a complete wingnut asshole, at least he won’t be as EVIL as Blankenship.

It’s a small blessing, but gods help us we need every one in this day and age.

@Mike in NC: having a lot of fun in my neck of the woods…Pittenger lost in a squeaker…The race for Mecklenburg County Sheriff, on the other hand, was a blowout. Incumbent Dem (older white guy) will finish 3rd in a 3 man race. Other 2 Dems are African Americans, and they both ran on ending the 287(g) program here in Charlotte

This does seem to be the issue, yes — the writer was pushing Kucinich as the progressive Donald Trump (hates immigrants, loves the white working class!) and Democrats called him on his bullshit and reminded him that Trump is a fucking white supremacist. Reporters really hate when you tell them that the emperor does not actually have new clothes and all the pretty prose in the world can’t change that.

@PaulWartenberg: It doesn’t matter since he lost, but for a legislative seat, I just don’t see how X Republican from WV can be “worse” than Y Republican from WV. Sure, Blankenship is further along the asymptote of pure evil than Morrisey (probably), but I don’t think he would be a considerably worse Senator than Morrisey. The fact is, they don’t really disagree on anything of substance; Morrisey just hasn’t killed anyone.

For executive positions, I think it makes sense to be cautious about setting up the worst guy to maybe win because that person will have a lot freer hand to do a lot of damage (of which we currently have abundant, ongoing, examples), but for legislative positions, it’s the party that defines the bulk of the evil, so it makes sense to hope for the worst for your opponent to increase your odds of success.

@Omnes Omnibus: lack of interest in 3+ way races? Or that renacci seemed more of a sure thing? High undecideds not breaking anywhere at all? I dunno. Hard for me to imagine holding a partisan-primary ballot in hand and not voting in both of the two top-ticket races.

Primary elections are the party-change opportunity in Ohio, though..maybe 60k non-repubs just really, really hated Mary Taylor.

    Sarah Lerner @SarahLerner

Rachel Crooks, who alleged that Donald Trump kissed her without her consent in 2005 when she was working as a receptionist in Trump Tower, secured her primary bid for state office in Ohio.

    Alexandra De Luca @AlexDe_Luca

The story of tonight isn’t the GOP’s failure to elect another white nationalist to their ranks. The story is the wave of pro-choice Democratic woman who absolutely crushed their primaries – and who are going to flip record seats in November.
