oh my goodness.

Marissa Blair, 28, was inches away when the photo was taken, narrowly escaping the car barreling toward them. In a moment of clarity amid chaos, Mr. Martin, 27, pushed her out of the way to take the brunt of the collision himself. https://t.co/NOYiSuG9vs

— erin mccann | subscribe to The Times (@mccanner) May 16, 2018

Seems like a good day to post this:

Since Aug. 12, 2017, Marcus Martin has lost anonymity, a close friend and, at times, his coping skills.

Mr. Martin’s red-and-white footwear will be more familiar to many than his name. He is the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, taken by Ryan M. Kelly, in Charlottesville, Va., during the Unite the Right rally, which was organized by white nationalists protesting the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. In the photo, Mr. Martin is midair, spread-eagle with his back parallel to the hot Virginia asphalt, after being struck by a Dodge Charger driven by James Alex Fields, who would later be charged with second-degree murder…

… On Jan. 31, 2017, he showed up, sweaty, at Miller Law Group with a twinkling diamond ring he bought for her at a Kay Jewelers. As proposals go, there have been smoother.

“I’ll never forget the way he was acting,” Ms. Blair said. “He was so nervous, he was sweating bullets.” As Mr. Martin got down on one knee, he didn’t notice a colleague of Ms. Blair’s, standing by the door waiting for a legal file.

Mr. Martin let his rehearsed words rip: “He was like, ‘You know I love you, right? You are everything to me. I don’t want to go another day calling you my girlfriend. Will you marry me?’”

Ms. Blair took a deep breath. “I made him step outside my office and do it all over again,” she said. This time without her colleague in the doorway. Mr. Martin’s second attempt was perfect, and she immediately said yes.

Mr. Martin had his reasons for proposing at the office. They included Courtney Commander and Heather Heyer, who also worked at the firm and were among the couple’s closest friends. Several months after the foursome celebrated Mr. Martin and Ms. Blair’s engagement, Ms. Commander, the most politically active of the group, would recruit the couple and Ms. Heyer to join her as counterprotesters at the Aug. 12 rally.

“Everybody felt strongly about what was going on,” said Ms. Commander. “Marissa and Marcus said they wanted to be there, but I wasn’t sure they would come.” Mr. Martin, still on parole and working a new job as a landscaper, told her he wanted to steer clear of trouble. She knew Ms. Blair wouldn’t come without him. But when Ms. Commander attended a July 8 march of the Ku Klux Klan in Charlottesville and sent Ms. Blair, Mr. Martin and Ms. Heyer video of the awful goings-on, they were inspired to join her in her next counterprotest.

Ms. Blair and Mr. Martin remember the early part of the rally on that Saturday afternoon as peaceful and almost enjoyable. Until 1:41 p.m. The violence, and Mr. Martin’s protective shove, “came out of nowhere,” Ms. Blair said…

On the afternoon of May 12, on the sprawling lawn of Walden Hall, an estate in Reva, Va., Mr. Martin and Ms. Blair were married under blue skies before 150 friends and family. Ms. Blair’s seven attendants included her brother Adrian Lombre. Her brother Dasan Hunt walked her down the grassy aisle to an altar draped in purple wisteria. The bridesmaids, including her maid of honor, Ms. Commander, wore long dresses in shades of lavender. Mr. Martin’s five groomsmen and best woman, Whitley Jones, wore dark suits with purple accents. The color scheme was in honor of Ms. Heyer’s favorite color…

It truly seems to have been a lovely event, in every sense. Much more detail at the link, for those who want a heartwarming story.

    For those with Netflix.

Cannot give it a wholehearted recommendation; if subtitles are not a negative, check out No Second Chance (a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZsGQRUNOtE””>trailer). While it veered off in directions didn’t particularly appreciate, there was enough there to warrant sticking around to see where it ended up when it got to it destination. Also included a heartless, cold-blooded villainess one won’t soon forget.

So an amusing thing happened yesterday – OzarkHillbilly should appreciate this.

I was walking past a busy construction site on a low-rise after lunch with a friend on the eastern fringes of downtown. A member of the construction crew was sitting in the door of an open van doing some work. He wore a pair of goggles, long thick pants and good boots as he was going about his business (safety first!).

As he sat, he was running an awkward angle cut on a 2X4 with a full size reciprocating saw while using his knees as a sawhorse and one elbow to hold it in place. The blade was about 3 inches from his right thigh.

I fairly ran to my car so I wouldn’t distract him by my cringing and shock into making a life-threatening mistake.

Meanwhile, in the real world, 2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members

The figures for 2018 do not suggest schools are more dangerous than combat zones. After all, there are more than 50 million students in public elementary and high schools and only about 1.3 million members of the armed forces. So far in 2018, a member of the military has been about 40 times as likely to be killed as someone is to die in a school shooting, including Keller’s revised figures.

That said, it is still the case that 2018 is shaping up to be unusually deadly at schools. Comparing the number of deaths and the number of shooting incidents this year directly with those through May 18 of 2017, that difference is stark.

But as James Joyner said at Outside the Beltway:

The 2018 data is skewed because of how deadly the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting was. And, of course, the number of military deaths is down because we’ve steadily wound down our footprint in Afghanistan. But the fact that an activity that should be incredibly safe is comparable to one so inherently dangerous is nonetheless tragic.

    @Baud:

    That link gave me anxiety.

In school, I worked for a while at a beer distributorship, second shift. Operated a forklift offloading boxcars and handloading trucks. There were no hard hats, no goggles and beer would stack 4 pallets high (smomewhere between 16-20 feet). My first day there the owner knocked two pallets of bottles off the top of a stack – it took eight hours to clean up.

Anyway, there was always beer on tap for employees (route drivers would bring back kegs which were about 15% full, and we had a tap system in place). You could drink as much as you wanted so long as you got your work done.

I might have speared several pallets of cans when forgetting to lower my forks.

I watched. I love all the pomp. And the Brits do it the best. I ALWAYS watch their ceremonies. The only difference this time is that I didn’t have to get up at an ungodly hour to do so.

I have only one complaint. I Love, love, love the dress. But it didn’t fit her. The waste should have been more pulled in and the boob part was buckling in. Now, I get it. A friend who is a wedding planner tells me that ALL brides lose weight. But when you are marrying a Prince and spending £200,000 on the dress you get the designer in the night before to refit it.

    But other than that, FABULOUS.

It’s not every day you get to marry a prince, and to have a whole side of your family showing their whole, entire ass to the whole, entire world and attempting to drag you down to their level cannot be easy to watch or tolerate.

Then again, it is also amazing to me that she’s marrying into the whitest and messiest family of all time (check the history books and do a Google search before you @ me), after dealing with her own white relatives for 36 years. So maybe she doesn’t need that sympathy after all.

Either which way, good luck, girl, and Godspeed. I wish you nothing but your happily ever after.

We had an Obama bumper sticker on each vehicle from his first primary race until those vehicles were traded in on a new car or totally destroyed in a rollover crash. Twice we had negative reactions from other drivers in tens of thousands of miles. One was a typical biker in AZ who passed us on a rural highway and did a thumbs down as he got past, so actually relatively polite disapproval.

The second time was in Ohio, we were in a VW on a driving long weekend trip on I-70. When we were passed by a Chrysler New Yorker a RWNJ in the back seat gave us the finger. All I could do not to sideswipe them with vigor. But I didn’t. Figures the guy wearing a suit was obscene and the biker was more polite.
