Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Republicans in disarray!

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

A lazy, rainy afternoon:

Sam enjoyed it though:

And when the rain stopped, we got a pretty rainbow over the park and Castleman Run Road:

Had a very summer dinner of BLT’s, coleslaw, and a pickle, and now are about to netflix it. I’m trying to maintain a peaceful balance in the era of Trump so I don’t explode with rage.

We hit 98 today–ugh–but a late afternoon wind is breaking (heh) the mini heatwave and it’s nice outside now. Too soon, nature, too soon!

OTOH the first heatwave usually knocks out pollen production.

I went back down to the beach after I cooked up the redfish and it was absolutely unfishable. The current was so strong that it took an 8oz triangle weight straight east like it was a cork. Tomorrow is a new day and the wind looks to be changing.

Dumbest Fucking Sports Journalist of the Week – Inside Tennis editor Bill Simons

Kudos to Serena Williams for how she handled this asshole.

Bill Simons: I know you want to get back to Olympia, so work with me here, please

    Serena Williams: Work with me.

Bill Simons: We’re in this together, baby.

Serena Williams: No, we’re not. You’re not going home to a screaming baby.

Bill Simons: I have been waiting 14 years to ask you this question. After the 2004 Wimbledon match with Maria (Sharapova), I had the opportunity to interview Donald Trump on his L.A. golf course, and he said that Maria’s shoulders were incredibly alluring and then he came up with this incredible analysis: That you were intimidated by her super model good looks. My question is: Have you ever been intimidated by anyone on a tennis court, and what are your thoughts on that occurrence?

Serena Williams: I honestly don’t have any thoughts about that. I can’t say I have been intimidated by anyone. That’s all. That’s it.

A sitting United States senator had the cops called on him after he tried to enter an immigration detention center and get a first-hand look at the families separated from their children at the border. I wrote about this sick policy for @RollingStone. rol.st/2IVGzb2

@SenJeffMerkley I was barred entry. Asked repeatedly to speak to a supervisor—he finally came out and said he can’t tell us anything. Police were called on us.

Children should never be ripped from their families & held in secretive detention centers. RT if you agree this is WRONG.

And the difference is just after people start dying, the laughter is cut off. It brings an air of seriousness.

Trump is going to need people to start dying.

I have been reading Werebears new ebook “Way of Cats” and it’s amazing. As a dog person I have been doing everything wrong. Been trying Werebear’s techniques today and alteady things are less fraught.

We have four rescues but my spouse is the cat person. I like them, but I tend to treat them like tiny shy dogs. I get along great with the half-siamese tuxedo guy. I am on friendly terms with the maine coon guy. I also am on friendly but not close terms with the timid girl tuxedo. Shadow the grey girl (also some siamese ancestry) doesn’t much like me.

I had to put my 93 year old dad in a nursing home last month, and take his indoor/outdoor cat of ten years (cat is probably about twelve) into our house as an indoor cat , with four indoor cats who have known each other since they were kittens (some adolescent, others tiny).

He had been an indoor/outdoor cat in a neighborhood with lots of cats. His cat social skills are good. Also he is sweet but very large.

Things have been tense. The new old guy is miserable. The other cats are outraged that he is here. The two dogs think he is cool (one of them has known him for many years.)

So I read this book, and as a dog person everything I have been doing is wrong. I would be skeptical, but I have been trying her suggestions all day , and things are substantially improved. Old new guy is relaxed. The other guys are asleep on the bed. Fierce girl isn’t lurking and hissing. Shy girl is acting normally.

My cat guy spouse thinks Werebear is silly, but he instinctively does what she suggests. He justs disagrees with her reasoning, but he also disagrees with her thinking that cats think much. I think the only one not thinking here is him.

Great book. Cat owners with issues should get it.

    @NotMax:

Any list of good bad movies that does not include the 1980s Flash Gordon is a bogus list. Sorry.

    @Platonailedit:

Plus she has a husband who worships the ground she walks on. The guy was seriously googly-eyed looking at her when they were at the royal wedding. It was really cute.

@frosty fred: I for one do not understand the problem with sandals and socks. I know it is supposed to look bad, and be poor fashion and ugly, but I forget why. So, when I see it, I reflexively note to myself that there is supposed to be something wrong with it, but I have no clue what the problem is supposed to be.

I am aware that Europeans get a general dispensation on it, for some reason.

Per one of the criteria the article laid out, that wouldn’t qualify.

any film with over a 60 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes was deemed ineligible

Flash Gordon has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just did six days on in ye olde jewelry shoppe, and I’m feeling kind of weary and cranky after enquiries about the robbery. All well meant, and I am more open to discuss (or decline discussion) now. But I did a little research online about robberies. And so, from the mouths of robbers comes the truism that they really want to pistol whip you. Robber culture, I guess. Only knew about that experience of mine because I felt the lumps and bumps later. Assholes!

Was walking dogs on a dog-sit this am and an off leash dog showed up out of nowhere and attacked one of my two charges who mixed it up with the agro interloper. My pup sustained small wounds on his enormous ears, and seemed pretty chill with the outcome, but it was scary for me as his guardian.

World largely unsafe, and I am weary…so to bed.

@Suzanne: She’s strong. And obviously so. This intimidates them. So they denigrate. It’s linked to but not completely tied up with racism. The Shaprova comment is so strange. Serena’s record against her something like 19-2. Why would she be intimidated again? Really just came off as Simons trying to put her in her place and some werid ass Trump cultism on top of it.
