Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

This really is a full service blog.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

He really is that stupid.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

In after Baud. Damn.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Sanders on not endorsing his son, who is running for Congress in NH:

“Levi has spent his life in service to low income and working families, and I am very proud of all that he has done. In our family, however, we do not believe in dynastic politics.”https://t.co/ZrU45PDRI4

— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) June 7, 2018

From the hometown paper:

… Aversion to dynasties aside, New Hampshire observers speculate that the real reason Bernie Sanders has not weighed in on his son’s behalf is that Levi Sanders is running what most in the state consider to be an inept campaign – and Bernie Sanders doesn’t want to be damaged in the run-up to a potential 2020 campaign of his own.

“Nobody I know is really considering Levi as an option,” said former state senator Burt Cohen, who was Bernie Sanders’ first prominent endorsement in 2016 and is backing a rival of Levi Sanders. “No, it’s actually worse than that: I don’t hear anyone even bringing up his name. People aren’t sure why he is running. If Levi thought he could just transfer the enthusiasm from his father to himself, well he is learning that is just not happening at all.

“It is just silly what he is doing,” Cohen added. “The way to sum up how people feel about the campaign is the eye rolls you get when his name does, infrequently, come up.” …

… Bernie Sanders’ decision not to weigh in has played a role in dampening support for his son, several longtime political observers say. If his own father isn’t backing him, why should voters? Last month, when Bernie Sanders had a conference call with the dozens of people on his New Hampshire steering committee, he thanked them for their work in 2016 and said it was crucial that they get involved in upcoming midterm elections. He never mentioned Levi’s campaign…

Now, if only Levi had access to the old man’s tax returns, he might’ve gotten more paternal respect…

"When Ivana Trump was pregnant with the couple's first child, she said her husband told her they could not name their son Donald Trump Jr. because of a specific concern.

"I said, 'Why not?'" she recalled. "He said, 'How about if he's a loser?'"

So basically Wilmer can’t grift off his son therefore he won’t support his son. Gotcha.

Cold, but true. Donald Jr is a loser. Just like his old man.

Bernie Sanders news makes my teeth hurt. He’s so damn annoying. And this I hate “dynasties” purity crap… Ugh!

Did not know that Levi was 48. Is he trying to be a late bloomer.

    @Bobby Thomson:

One of my most persistent “If Only’s” about the 2016 campaign is this:

If only, Martin O’Malley had been a halfway viable candidate. He’d have never beaten Hillary, but he’d have wanted to at least get into second place. Which means he’d have actually used all the oppo research that everyone knew was out there on Wilmer but that Hillary chose not to use in the futile hope of not alienating Wilmer’s cultists.

@Yutsano: think it’s more that Levi is an embarrassment…a month or so ago something was said and linked to his Twitter page. I spent about 10 minutes reading through his tweets…he’s barely literate and some of the crap he says, retweets, links to is just plain Cray. It’s close to accidently falling thru a wormhole into some FOX comment section.

OT, maybe there will be more on this tomorrow.

Store reacts to narrow ruling about gay wedding cakes.

A Tennessee hardware store owner is celebrating the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of a bakery that refused to bake a cake for a gay couple’s wedding by placing a “No Gays Allowed” sign in front of his store.

Jeff Amyx, who owns Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies in Grainger County, initially posted the sign in 2015 after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage but later removed it following intense backlash.

The sign returned this week, however, after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, according to WBIR 10.

Amyx told the local NBC affiliate that the ruling came as a shock to him, calling the decision a victory for Christianity.

To say the very least. BTW, the town is Washburn, Tennessee. Just took a peek and the store has a 1.5 rating on Yelp. Expect that to drop some more.

IIRC, in the VT media he kept calling her his stepdaughter. Which is true, if not kind. If she’d won, no doubt he’d have welcomed her back to ‘his’ family.

Levi, poor man, is unambiguously his father’s genetic offspring… so all Daddy can do about him is pretend he doesn’t exist.

    Courtesy of Wikipedia:

Washburn is home to the only operating public school in northern Grainger County.
    [snip]
Washburn received a grant from the State for the sum of $282,000 to build 6,000 feet (1,800 m) of sidewalks in the town, but were never constructed.

    Courtesy of Yelp:

So, if I come into the store with a gay friend and we want to buy a bag of charcoal for a BBQ, are you saying I can only get a half bag (the non-gay half)?? That won’t work for me.

How much is a gallon of hate and bigotry? Asking for a friend. Also are all gays prohibited or are lipstick lesbians allowed since they feature so prominently in porn? Is it just the males you don’t like?

I’m not surprised that Jeff Amyx, the hardware store bigot, believes he can put that sign out there now and never get in trouble for it ever again. But if some gay biker tools by and sees it, he may live to regret it, IF he lives through the beating he so richly deserves.

If I weren’t so elderly and decrepit I would do it on account of the people I love who are gay, although most of them would discourage that. They’re nicer people than I am, and I perceive that bigots don’t learn except from painful experience.

And that’s what the “narrow ruling” by the Supremes does for the gay community. It makes all the homophobic bigots forget all the other supportive rulings the court has made in the face of what should be an obscure ruling about crummy cake making. People of that sort really seem to need someone to despise and look down on, I guess because the haters are so despicable themselves.

The next few times some innocent gay youngster gets beaten or killed for being what they are, that’s on the judges that made that ruling about that damned wedding cake. All of them.

And calling it a victory for Christians, how despicable can you get? If you believe in that specific religion, then we are all the way God made us, and who are these ignorant bigots to reject God’s creations? I do not recall Jesus speaking negatively about gay people in their bible!!

ATC on NPR (or maybe it was ME) had an interview with Wilmer yesterday, asking him about endorsements. I don’t know if they asked about his son specifically.

He said (roughly): “I’m not a Democrat… If I cared about my record on endorsements, I’d just pick the Establishment™ candidate or the one with the biggest war chest. Then I’d have a 100% record and look like a genius! But that’s not what I’m about. I’m about getting new people to run for office and move the Democratic party to the Left. And if our candidates get 45% this time, maybe they’ll win next time!”

Of course, it’s nonsense. If endorsements and normal politicking like that didn’t matter, then what is Our Revolution™ all about? It’s just sour grapes. And why a non-Democrat is worried about what the Democratic Party does is still something that he has never explained very well. Grrr…

Wilmer doesn’t care about anyone’s politics but his own. Not even his kids’. It’s always, always about how pure Wilmer is…

    Cheers,
    Scott.
