Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Accountability, motherfuckers.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

When we show up, we win.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

For Black Lives Activists, Engaging in Trump’s Pardon Politics Feels Like a Deal With the Devil

Is it “worth boosting the reputation of a racist, misogynist, and dangerously authoritarian administration?”

    Brandon E. PattersonJun. 11, 2018 3:24 PM

    Last Wednesday, Alice Marie Johnson,
a 63-year-old great-grandmother who served more than 20 years of a life sentence for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense, was released from federal prison in Alabama after President Donald Trump commuted her sentence at the request of Kim Kardashian West. The reality TV star, who got
involved after seeing a news video about Johnson, had met with Trump at
the White House to plead her case.

    …………………..

“It’s clear that this is a PR stunt,” says Malkia Cyril, executive director and co-founder of the Center for Media Justice,
an Oakland-based group focused on the role of surveillance technology in incarcerating people of color. “That said, even a PR stunt can get some of our people free.”

“We have to make a decision,” she adds, “as to whether getting one or two, or three or four, or 10 people released from prison is worth
boosting the reputation of a racist, misogynist, and dangerously
    authoritarian administration.”

Hoover wasn’t President when Hitler became Chancellor.

Actually he was; they overlapped in office for just over a month (Jan 30 – Mar 4, 1933). You may be confused because the president’s term now ends on January 20th, but when Hoover was in office it didn’t end until March 4th. It was actually the end of Hoover’s term that convinced the country to change the inauguration date. Hoover refused to do anything substantive during his lame duck period*, which left the country effectively leaderless for about 4 months at a time when the economy was collapsing. People decided we could figure out who won the election considerably sooner than that, so they moved the date up. It’s intriguing to think about what might have happened in 2000-2001 with an extra month to tabulate votes.

*Which admittedly would have precluded a Hitler/Hoover summit meeting.

Kudlow (quotes from a J. Chait article)

In 1993, when Bill Clinton proposed an increase in the top tax rate from 31 percent to 39.6 percent, Kudlow wrote, “There is no question that President Clinton’s across-the-board tax increases … will throw a wet blanket over the recovery and depress the economy’s long-run potential to grow.”
This was wrong. Instead, a boom ensued.

Kudlow endorsed Bush’s argument that the budget surplus he inherited from Clinton would turn out to be even larger than forecast. (Kudlow also claimed that) “Faster economic growth and more profitable productivity returns will generate higher tax revenues at the new lower tax-rate levels. Future budget surpluses will rise, not fall.”
    This was wrong, too.

    (In 2002)

“The shock therapy of decisive war will elevate the stock market by a couple-thousand points,” he predicted.
    That was wrong.

    (About the housing bubble)

“There’s no recession coming. The pessimistas were wrong. It’s not going to happen. At a bare minimum, we are looking at Goldilocks 2.0. (And that’s a minimum). Goldilocks is alive and well. The Bush boom is alive and well.”
+ “The Media Are Missing the Housing Bottom,” he wrote in July 2008.
    All of this was wrong.

    (In 2009)

The administration “is waging war on investors. He’s waging war against businesses. He’s waging war against bondholders. These are very bad things.”
    That was also wrong.

(In April 2011, refusing to credit Obama)

“March unemployment rate drop proof lower taxes work.”

    (In 2012)

Kudlow advised Republican governor of Kansas Sam Brownback to implement a sweeping tax-cut plan that would produce faster growth.
    This was wrong.
