Putin’s Triumph Is Complete

Responding to his U.S. lackey’s suggestion that Russia be readmitted to the G7, Putin says he’s in a better club anyway, so he don’t need no steenking alliance of Western democracies:

After being ousted from the G-7 (then the G-8) in 2014 for occupying Crimea in Ukraine, Putin joined a Chinese-commanded economic group called the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Putin boasted on Sunday that the new partnership holds more global economic weight than the G-7.

“True, the seven are still richer in per capita income, as they say, but the S.C.O. economies are larger, and their population is much larger, too — half the world’s population,” Mr. Putin told reporters Sunday, according to a transcript of his remarks reviewed by the Times…

Putin said he would be willing to meet with Trump to discuss the G-7 and other matters.

“The President of the United States has repeatedly said that he considers this meeting expedient and I agree that this is indeed the case,” he said, according to the Times.

That last sentence is Putin pointing out Trump’s embarrassing obsequiousness. Trump has indeed repeatedly and pathetically begged for face time with the mob boss who runs an economy that is significantly smaller than California’s, not only because Trump owes his position to Putin but because Trump imagines he can BE Putin when he grows up.

What are the odds Trump reads Putin’s remarks, quits the G7 and humbly petitions for admission to the SCO? Does he tear up all his official papers because he keeps absentmindedly writing “Mrs. Vladimir Putin” and “DJ + VP = 4ever” in the margins?

And every day on Fox News, some GOP butt-plug trots out to announce that Trump has made America respected in the world again, while Trump’s base claps like a troupe of trained seals.

Will there be a sufficient number of American patriots to address this national humiliation and take actions to wipe the smile off Putin’s face? I guess we’ll find out in November.

“Putin’s Triumph Is Complete ” should be on the front page, above the fold, in 48-point type, of every fucking newspaper in this country.

Shitgibbon’s moronic supporters will think that’s the bee’s knees, but anyone rational, or who cares about this country, will go “What the ever-loving FUCK?”

And fuck you, too, Mitch, you fucking traitor.

Supreme Court Upholds Ohio Voter Purge Law
An eligible Ohio voter who was removed from the voter rolls prompted the case.
    headshot
    By Sam Levine

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Ohio could continue to use an aggressive process for removing people from its voting rolls, saying the procedure did not run afoul of federal voter protections.

The decision in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute helps clarify the steps states can take to remove someone from their voter rolls, and it could encourage them to be more aggressive. The case was brought on behalf of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a labor and civil rights group, and an eligible Ohio voter the state had removed from its voter rolls. The voter had been living at the same address for about 16 years.

    ………………………………….

he League of Women Voters noted in a friend-of-the-court brief that only five other states ― Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia ― use someone’s failure to vote to trigger the process for canceling their voter registration. But all those states, the League noted, give someone longer than two years of not voting before they begin the cancellation process.

@HAL: This is what I’m afraid of, re: November. They know they’re in trouble so it’s about f*cking up the vote itself. I’m really worried about November. Not about the Dems not showing up to vote; they’ve made it pretty clear they’re going to. But about the elections being ratf*cked by the white supremacists. Because what do we do then? Voting them out is our only real power, and if they’re willing to ignore that, then what? Will we riot in the streets or will we accept the media’s spin of this is what Real Ammmuricans want?

Ugh. I hate being so negative and I really really really want to be totally wrong in November.

Goddam, Betty, you are on fire!

Funny thing, though. The SCO chair is Xi of China, and I don’t think he is taking any shit from Putin. And the dominant economies as well as the larger populations, are Asian. So, Putin is creating havoc in the West, but also trying to kiss up to China. Risky play.

@SFAW: I hope you’re right. It’s just, with so many of these states not bothering with a paper record, I’m at the point where I don’t put it past them to hack the vote totals. It’s not that voting machines haven’t been hackable since the pull lever days, but those required someone to actually manually f*ck with each machine. Now, it’s something that can likely be done remotely.

On the other hand, the local control of elections makes it harder to do widespread shenanigans, but I’m really anxious. The GOP aren’t even trying to appeal to anyone but racists, homophobes and misogynists these days, and I feel like they figure the game has been fixed for them already; they don’t have to.

OT: Just heard NPR newscast. Thought they were speaking of a Hurricane Baud.

Category 3 Hurricane Bud heads north off Mexican coast

MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Bud grew to Category 3 force off Mexico’s Pacific coast on Monday, but forecasters said it was likely to weaken before a possible brush with the resort-dotted southern tip of the Baja California peninsula late in the week.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Bud had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph Monday morning. It was centered about 235 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and was moving northwest at 10 mph.

Forecasters said Bud was expected to strengthen further before a slow weakening trend starts Tuesday.

“Significantly cooler waters around the southern tip of Baja California should reduce Bud’s intensity below hurricane status before it reaches that land,” the center said.

The Hurricane Center said the storm could generate swells that cause life-threatening surf and rip currents over the coming days along Mexico’s southwestern coast. Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated patches of 10 inches, was possible into Tuesday afternoon.

That hurricane is short a vowel.

Ms. Fox immortalized her ordeal [recounted by Krakauer in “Into Thin Air”] by choosing a custom Colorado license plate that pre-emptively responded should anyone wonder whether she would climb the world’s highest mountain again. It read, “Neverest.”

…. Returning from dinner, weekend guests discovered her body at the bottom of a 77-step hardwood staircase connecting the four stories of her house on Tomboy Road, which undulates along a mountainside. Her front door is on the top floor.

“When someone dies of a long illness, it gives you time to process that; it’s even a blessing,” Connie Self, a movie producer and friend of Ms. Fox, told The Telluride Daily Planet. “It’s hard to find the blessing in this. It’s a huge reminder of how vulnerable we are, how risk is everywhere.”

… Ms. Fox’s generosity extended to individuals, including a friend whom she presented with a bracelet. The inscription was particularly apt from an alpinist who had surveyed the world from its highest vantage point, on Everest, and survived.

“Leap,” said the inscription, “and the net will open.”

I love that. I think she’s right; usually you find your net. Got to be audacious.

She climbed five 8000-meter peaks, Dhaulagiri and Everest among them.

When Kim Reynolds and Peter O’Neil arrived in Telluride, Colorado, on Thursday, May 24, for Mountainfilm weekend, Kim spoke to Charlotte Fox for five minutes while unloading food and gear; only five minutes, but long enough for Charlotte to say, “I love being 61.”

I like that she was excited about 61. How often do you hear that?

This is a nightmare scenario for voting rights advocates. SCOTUS has effectively given red states the green light to engage in voter purges that disproportionately affect minority and low-income communities. Sotomayor’s dissent is scathing. pic.twitter.com/ORCbXY29vc

@rikyrah: Caucusing with the Democrats could actually have saved Flake’s career, and Collins and McCain should do it.

There is a kind of precedent: John Warner of Virginia stood up to his state Republicans when they tried to put up Oliver North for US Senate in 1994.

It actually made Warner far more popular among Democrats, who applauded and supported actual political courage when they saw it. John Warner was re-elected with the help of Democrats for all subsequent terms.

Mark Warner ran against John Warner in 1996, and this was going to be a problem for him. “Send John Warner a thank you note, not a vote” or words to that effect.

I voted, happily, for John Warner. Got to reward courage, and it was obvious Mark had a bright future later.

So: screw the GOP types flapping their lips about Trump. They are cowards if they don’t do more. (FWIW, I don’t hold McCain, now, to this standard because I have no idea what his current health is like.)

The Doctrine quoted over at LawyersGunsMoneyBlog:

Amid the international upheaval after the G-7 summit, an unnamed senior White House official summed up the Trumpian foreign policy doctrine: “We’re America, bitch.”

According to a Monday Atlantic report, a “senior White House official with direct access to the president and his thinking” explained: “Obama apologized to everyone for everything. He felt bad about everything.” The official said that Trump “doesn’t feel like he has to apologize for anything America does.”

Another distillation of Trump’s doctrine came from a senior national security official: “permanent destabilization creates American advantage,” the official said, arguing that leaving everyone else on shaky ground makes America the sole strong power.

A senior administration official contributed “no friends, no enemies,” a quip that encapsulates Trump’s distaste for permanent alliances in favor of shifting relationships based on his moods and impulses.

According to Larry Kudlow, Trump is upset with Trudeau because he wanted to look like a tough guy before meeting with Kim Jong Un. As if Donald would be able to intimidate a guy with bluster and grumpy looks and folded arms who had his half-brother murdered in a public airport and his uncle assasinated by multiple machine guns.
It is more likely that Kim Jong Un tells Trump that Putin sends his congratulations for breaking up the G7, and that Putin has said that he will release the tape unless Donald goes along with Kim’s deal.

I like how Putin talks up the SCO without acknowledging that China and many other members have rising income and associated standards of living, whereas, Russia has and has had for quite a while, falling income and associated standard of living (not to mention life expectancy). Sure, I accept that to some extent truly emerging economies are going to end up affecting wealthy nations in ways that probably will seem negative to the people living in those nations, but the people who support Trump are the ones MOST LIKELY to be affected in the most negative ways by that development. For them, this would be objectively a bad thing. It still amazes me, to think of people with genuine talent and skill in Russia, and the degree to which Putin either swallows that talent whole for his own benefit or simply destroys it if he can’t see how it helps him or his friends.
