This is a GREAT story about how awesome and diverse Salt Lake City is and has become. We have an incredibly vibrant LGBTQ community here, and a great Pride parade. Unfortunately, at last weekend’s pride parade some idiots harassed some participants on their way home. They sought refuge in a local ice cream shop, where one of the employees bravely confronted a crowd of 15-20 harassers. They attacked this guy, but he kept them at bay, eventually turning them away from the shop…

Here is a link to the Salt Lake Tribune article about it, and about how people have since been coming by to thank him. It’s a nice, hopeful, and sweet story, and one that (I hope) shows off where we are going.

… On Saturday night, the 21-year-old was working behind the counter at Doki Doki dessert shop during a quiet shift. Just before closing, about 10:30 p.m., four frightened men who had just left the Utah Pride Festival burst through the door. The group of guys that had chased them in was gathering outside, making taunting gestures and yelling homophobic slurs.

[Terrance] Mannery ran to the entrance to block the mob from coming into the cafe.

One attacker shoved Mannery into the glass and metal door, breaking its hinge. Some of them started punching. It was dark and Mannery couldn’t see how many there were. He felt at least seven hits; one left a dark red scratch on his cheek. Witnesses have said he was trying to fend off some 15 to 20 muscular men.

The group, described by one bystander as some “wholesome Utah boys,” dispersed when a security guard approached. Mannery went back inside Doki Doki. Not knowing what else to do, he went back to taking orders. The four victims who ran in left in a Lyft. It was over in minutes…

“Even in hindsight, I would have still gone out,” said Mannery, who came to Utah from Wisconsin three years ago for school. During his first summer here, he went to the 2016 Pride Parade. There were a few protesters but nothing like what he saw Saturday.

“I hope this inspires more people to stand up, but hopefully they do it in a safer way. I don’t want people to try to take on entire groups by themselves, but if you hear your friends making jokes, definitely say something.”

    All that scene really needed was some guns, right? Ice cream guy could have come out with a shotgun and leveled it at the group telling them to go away, a couple of the young fascists could have pulled out their own weapons and immediately fired on him, claiming to have felt threatened. No doubt his shotgun would have discharged in the process, probably leading to the whole shop being raided with multiple additional casualties and significant property damage.

    Such a great example for America in the era of MAGA!

    @NotMax: @?BillinGlendaleCA: No such thing as an ugly color. Used in the right circumstances with the proper accompaniments any color can be perfect. Take note, I do not say beautiful as there is no such thing as a beautiful color either. Used in the wrong context any color can be jarring.

    Good to know that despite the best efforts of corporate media, corporate corruption, and all too willing Soldiers-for-Jesus-because-it’s-not-about-racism-shut-up, there are people who prize being people.

    I was telling someone that some US citizens draw their Circles of People very narrowly; leaving out most of them. While this blog embraces fellow jackals, dogs, and especially cats as… well, people.

    When plain cigarette packs hit the shelves — scheduled for December 1 — they will be ‘‘drab dark brown’’ with large graphic health warnings and the manufacturers’ brand names written in a small generic font — just big enough to read from a distance of one metre.

    It doesn’t much matter what the color is. Since most cigarettes are kept behind a counter now, the real deterrent will be the ten minute wait while the clerk goes searching through the sea of ‘deep dark brown’ to find the brand the customer asked for. Get several customers asking for cigarettes in line at the minimart, and folks behind them with their melting soft-serve, I see the potential for things to get real ugly real quick.

    @OzarkHillbilly: I have to agree, even though I did a lot of babysitting in the ’70’s; when color choices got all earth toned and orange which is not my favorite.

    In fact, at least half of my babysitting gigs were in the trailers with the Mediterranean theme; blood red carpet and room dividers made of wrought iron.

    Some of you already know this, but I thought I’d let the rest of my friends here know that my former partner Allen died last Friday evening from complications of a stroke he suffered back over the Christmas holidays. He was 53. We had been together for 15 years from 1984 to 1999 but remained friends, perhaps even better than when we were all-but-married. He went out on his own terms: no heroic measures, just hospice at home and sleep at the end.

    To quote Lanford Wilson in “Fifth of July,” “[He] didn’t believe in death and I don’t either…. There’s no such thing. It goes on and then it stops. You can’t worry about the stopping, you have to worry about the going on.”

    Trump announced that he will order an end to regular “war games” the United States conducts with ally South Korea, a reference to annual joint military exercises that are an irritant to North Korea. Trump called the exercises “very provocative” and “inappropriate” in light of the optimistic opening he sees with North Korea. Ending the exercises would also save money, Trump said.

    @WereBear: Shadow, my skittish grey cat, thanks you for your book. We were on VERY bad terms lately because she is a mean cat and I don’t understand cats. I am following your suggestions and now she is much happier and sort of friendly. We blink at each other a lot.

    I just wish she wouldn’t try to attack my dad’s old cat when he is sleeping. He has already lost his owner and his home. Why does she need to go out of her way to make things worse for him. Because she can, and that is who she is.

    A Jefferson County woman filmed in one of the most racist, redneck Missourah scenes imaginable was fired from her south county waitressing gig today after the video went viral. In the clip, twenty-year-old Tabitha “Tabbie” Duncan, Michelob Ultra in hand, rides atop a truck as it rambles down a dirt road in the dark. It’s pretty standard small-town idiocy, until a mostly off-camera narrator starts in with some jarring racism.

    Narrator: “So we going n****r hunting today or what?”

    Another idiot in a baseball cap: “We’re going n****r hunting.”

    Narrator: “We’re fucking n****r hunting right now, uh?

    And then Duncan chimes in: “You get them n****s.”

    That’s a lot of terribleness for a fifteen-second SnapChat, horrifying enough that someone snatched the video and unleashed it on Facebook. Social media sleuths quickly identified Duncan as a waitress at Social Bar and Grill (4265 Reavis Barracks Road, 314-833-3241). That led to a pretty energetic social media campaign to fire Duncan.

    Social, a breastaurant based in south St. Louis County, had previously featured Duncan prominently in a number of its social media posts. Shortly before lunch, the bar pulled down those Facebook posts and issued a statement, announcing Duncan had been canned.

    This is typical for JeffCo my neighboring county and for Washington county too. Video at the link if anyone is interested, but I’ve seen it all before and feel no need to see it again.

    Tim Miller can find almost anyone. Can he find his daughter’s killer?

    Texans have a habit of taking matters into their own hands, and Tim Miller is one of them.

    One day in 1994, Miller drove to the home of Robert Abel, a quiet, retired Nasa engineer. He confronted Abel outside his house. They started arguing. Miller drew a .357 revolver. He held the gun to Abel’s head and demanded he confess to being a serial killer.

    As Miller stared down the barrel, he thought Abel’s face was strangely impassive. Suddenly, he felt the anger flush from his body. He decided not to pull the trigger, for, he later claimed, two reasons: if Abel really were a serial killer, killing him would end the possibility of identifying his other victims and bringing closure to their families. And if Abel really were some kind of psychopath, devoid of conscience and incapable of remorse, then killing him would serve no real justice.

    With that, Miller walked away. He broke down weeping, drove to a hospital and checked himself into the psychiatric ward. By the time he emerged, 10 days later, he knew he couldn’t go on as he was. He had to channel his grief more productively.

    His mission, however, wasn’t over.

    A long but worthwhile read.
