Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I was promised a recession.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Republicans in disarray!

Consistently wrong since 2002

He really is that stupid.

People are complicated. Love is not.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Second rate reporter says what?

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

— NBC News (@NBCNews) June 15, 2018

From The New York Times:

A federal judge revoked Paul Manafort’s bail and sent him to jail on Friday to await trial, citing new charges that Mr. Manafort had tried to influence the testimony of two of the government’s witnesses after he had been granted bail.

Gonna be a long Friday as we wait to see if a Cohenoscopy has been scheduled for today.

Today, Trump tried to claim that Paul Manafort had worked on the Trump campaign for 49 days.

Manafort worked on the Trump campaign from March 28, 2016 to August 19, 2016. That's 144 days.

For context: Bannon and Conway each worked about 84 days on the campaign.

Cohen signals openness to cooperating with federal investigators

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen has indicated to family and friends he is willing to cooperate with federal investigators to alleviate the pressure on himself and his family, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Cohen has expressed anger with the treatment he has gotten from the President, who has minimized his relationship with Cohen, and comments from the President’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, the source said. The treatment has left him feeling isolated and more open to cooperating, the source said.

Rudy is on the teevee demanding that Peter Strozk be in jail by the end of the week.

Their whole conspiracy of the deep state ratf*ckery perpetrated on the innocent Trump campaign now hangs on a single line in an email exchange between a couple of FBI officials.

I hope they realize that roughly 66 million Americans were saying exactly what Strozk was saying, and for the same (unstated) reason.

Ok, went to bed last night feeling pretty relieved and confident that the IG pretty much concluded the FBI is essentially functioning as it should. And the judge locking up Manafort today is another reassuring sign that the justice system is still alive and well in this country.

So, could someone explain to me why Josh Marshall is worried about charges being brought against Comey and the former FBI agent, Strzok? I don’t see that as a likely outcome based on the IG’s report. It essentially said while it disagreed with Comey’s interpretation of how to handle the Clinton situation, no true wrong doing was done. It criticized the politics of Strzok and his girlfriends personal messages, but concluded no impact was had on their investigation. And in the end, it’s biggest conclusion was anything the FBI did only hurt her and helped Trump.

So is Marshall accurate here or is he just concern trolling?

@Elizabelle: Wray will wait for the IG report to do anything. My understanding is that the NY Field Office has an equivalent problem to the Boston Field Office’s problem with Whitey Bulger. In the latter case, they thought they were running Bulger, but Bulger was running them. In the case of the NYFO they think they’re running the Russian mob, but the Russian mob is really running them. And, of course, Kallstrom when he was the Supervisory Special Agent in Charge developed a completely formed, and largely false, belief system that the Clintons, especially Secretary Clinton, were basically their own two person organized crime family. Word is he passed this belief on to the agents he mentored, many of whom are now in senior positions in the NY Field Office. So you get a self fulfilling prophecy: I believe the Clintons are dirty and just keep getting away with it, I have some evidence that might indicate the Clintons did something wrong, since I already believe the Clintons are dirty and just keep getting away with it, the evidence must be true, the Clintons are therefore guilty.

All the lawyers that specialize in this stuff think a prosecution is very unlikely unless inappropriate legal pressure is brought to bear. Strzok may face a number of disciplinary actions if he isn’t smart enough to just quickly retire (he’s got the time in), as a result of the IG’s report. He could be stripped of his SES rank. He could be terminated. The worst thing he could be accused of is using his work phone to send personal text messages. Which, while stupid, is not a crime. My guess is he’ll be allowed to retire. If we don’t actively push hard on this, we are going to be so immorally bankrupt in the eyes of the rest of the world that we will never be able to crawl back.

@cain: There’s a difference here. McCabe was trying to get to 30 years before retirement. He could have retired at anytime after 20 years of service. It just happened that McCabe’s retirement date was in play as the IG investigation into his actions played out and got caught up in the issues between the President and AG Sessions. Strzok is, if I’m recalling correctly from the reporting, at 24 years of service at the FBI. So he can retire at any time. If he doesn’t have too much paid time off accrued and unused, he should be able to get out in short order. That was one of the issues with McCabe – he was burning up his paid leave, which is required, before he could formally, officially retire.

When wife went to pick him up, they had her go to his cage to pick him up. ON the cage was a preprinted sticky that said “BITES” and on which was added “Hard!” He leaped into her arms when the door was opened.

He lived a long and happy life after that with metamucil fiber on every meal. Since then we have learned that canned pumpkin (no spices added) makes a wonderful additive to the diet of overweight critters, and keeps them from getting stopped up.

Have gotten an obese cat from 20 pounds of sphereosity down to 14 pounds of where she ought to be [but looks funny with all the extra skin~!] with pumpkin additive, but now she’s just on a well controlled diet, locked up in the imperial dining bathroom while dinner is being eaten.

I couldn’t stomach trying to watch Trumpov talk to “Fox and Friends” this morning, but I understand it was a real Doocy (lol

Here’s a list of all the quotes, lies, and insane shit he threw out there, just for everyone’s reference: The 49 Wildest Quotes From Donald Trump’s Bananas Interview With Fox News

(CNN writer’s comments/rebuttals are after each Trumpov comment)

    22. “You go into the FBI and take a poll of the real FBI — not the scum on top, not Comey and that group of people that are total thieves.”
    So:
    a) You already said the poll thing
    b) “Scum,” seriously?
    c) “Total thieves,” double seriously?

    23. “I have a fantastic relationship now with North Korea.”
REMINDER: Trump spent five-ish hours total with Kim and the rest of the North Koreans who were in Singapore earlier this week for the summit. And yet: “Fantastic relationship.”:

    24. “I said on the Department of Justice, I would stay uninvolved. Now I may get involved at some point if it gets worse.”
This isn’t threatening or ominous. Not at all!

    25. “I did nothing wrong. There was no collusion. There was no obstruction.”
“There is no O.” — Donald Trump

    26. “I tried staying uninvolved. I may not stay uninvolved.”
Yes, you said that. But always worth repeating a threat, right?

    27. “That’s just the tip of the iceberg. What will happen if we go further. There was total bias, I mean total bias.”
Trump is openly flicking at conspiracy theories involving the “deep state” aligned against him. By suggesting an exhaustive, 500-plus-page report is only the “tip of the iceberg” he is signaling to his supporters that other more damaging things are still being hidden. Of course, he offers no specifics of what’s being hidden — or why.

    28. “Certainly they just seemed like very criminal acts to me.”
Trump’s response to Doocy’s totally fair and balanced question about Comey that went like this: “From what you’ve seen so far, should James Comey be locked up?”

    29. “I think Comey was the ringleader of this whole den of thieves. It’s a den of thieves.”
This is the FBI — or at least the top brass of the FBI — Trump is talking about. The President of the United States is saying the top FBI personnel are a “den of thieves.” This is not normal.

    Not normal, no siree…

    Assumptions:
    1. Manafort knows something about the Russian interference op, something not yet public knowledge, something big
    2. The fact that Mueller has gone so hard at Manafort tends to support this
    3. Manafort has likely been asked or pressured to cooperate
    4. Reason number 1 why he hasn’t: holdimg out for a pardon. The down side is that now he will be sitting in jail waiting.
    5. Reason number 2: he atrogantly expects to beat the charges. This seems increasingly doubtful.
    6. Reason number 3: Oleg and Vlad will kill him and/or his family if he talks.
    7. I think he’s not going to hold out for a pardon. I think the key is to give adequate assurances that he and his family will be safer if he cooperates than if he doesn’t.

While walking along Market Street, I often passed Robert Crumb’s brother, Maxon, and many times saw him in his lotus position swallowing a cheesecloth. Never knew who this crazy person was until I saw the documentary “Crumb”. His reasoning for the cheesecloth routine:

Every three weeks, Maxon Crumb swallows a long strip of purification cloth, a kriya (yogic discipline) that alleviates his chronic stomach pain. That pain, he says, is the legacy of his father who, while stationed in Shanghai in 1938, shot a beggar in the stomach. In Crumb’s mind, that event triggered a karmic chain that still plays out in his troubled stomach.

China’s Commerce Ministry said Friday that it will respond immediately on the same scale to the Trump administration’s new tariffs on Chinese goods worth up to $50 billion.

“We will immediately introduce taxation measures of the same scale and the same strength,” the ministry said in an English-language statement.

“All the economic and trade achievements previously reached by the two parties will no longer be valid at the same time,” the ministry said, calling the U.S. behavior “short-sighted.”

In May, Beijing and the U.S. agreed to “meaningful increases” in U.S. agriculture and energy exports to China. However, the White House subsequently said it would still pursue tariffs on Chinese goods that were proposed in April, causing trade relations to deteriorate.

@Frankensteinbeck: It’s not just Ryan. It’s the whole GOP leadership since Goodlatte (with Boehner’s help/acquiescence/direction) killed the Senate bi-partisan immigration bill (68 votes in the Senate) in 2013. Politico has a history.

Of course the GOP not going to pass a bill. But in addition, they’re indicating that they think that the House is simply an instrument of the White House. They’re breaking the Separation of Powers and being quite upfront about it.

    They don’t care.

That’s (one of many reasons) why they have to be voted out.

The respect for how the law is supposed to work is great. The part that probably gets to a lot of people is how it really doesn’t always work that way. PM gets bail because he can afford a good lawyer(s). What about the thousands of people who can’t and don’t get it because they can’t afford better than the overworked, underpaid pubic defender, who can spend 3-5 minutes at most on their case? Last jury duty I pulled I sat in the hallway outside a courtroom and watched this unfold. Lawyer talks to the guy/gal for 30 seconds before they walk in. The guy is there with his wife/kid and his lawyer has to read the file to know his name. I’d bet this gets replayed all day, every day, outside every courtroom in the land. And I think this because I’ve seen this play out every time I’ve been on jury duty, in 2 different counties in CA and in OH.

An ex had a wonderful GS. She was one of the best dogs I’ve been around. Ex used to breed her and most of the pups went fast. But ex kept one. Dumbest fucking dog I’ve ever known. By a long ways. Even the pups mom couldn’t believe how dumb. We were by the reservoir, which had a shallow area that was about 1/4 mile wide. Mom decided to take pup for a swim, pups maybe 10 months old. Mom does everything possible to show and teach him and nothing. She walks back in to shore shaking her head side to side as if to say “What a dumbass!” I almost fell down laughing. She also tried to teach the pup to play fetch. Not possible. She just gave up after that.

  295. 295.

@Sab: Well, I’m almost sixty-six, and my German Shepherd/Husky mix is ten, and when he pegs out—may that day be long deferred—I’m going to adopt another. I’ve taken enormous moral improvement over the years merely attempting to live up to this one’s opinion of me.

ETA: Oh, and smart? He’s a doggie Einstein. Way smarter than the single troll upthread, which admittedly is not setting the bar very high.
