Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Cole is on a roll !

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The willow is too close to the house.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

It’s a doggy dog world.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

No one could have predicted…

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Second rate reporter says what?

Everybody saw this coming.

All the man needs now is a toothbrush mustache:

We don’t want what is happening with immigration in Europe to happen with us!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 18, 2018

This tweet is exactly 14 Words. https://t.co/zQPpjw3Jfz

— Robert Marchini (@rhcm123) June 18, 2018

The (other) 14 Words.

The guy with the nukes, fresh off a week in which he repeatedly praised & openly envied the world's most brutal dictatorship, is rationalizing his own practice of putting kids in camps (under guise of taking them to the showers) by libeling non-whites as destroying German culture

— zeddy (@Zeddary) June 18, 2018

Per pool, POTUS added, “A county without borders is not a country at all.” People coming into the country are bringing “death and destruction, POTUS said.

“They are thieves and murderers and so much else,” POTUS said, eliciting applause from the audience in East Room of WH. https://t.co/LtHMzpWbuQ

— Yamiche Alcindor (@Yamiche) June 18, 2018

Of course, the rest of the GOP is… well, if not fine with this policy, at least too cowed to complain:

Reporter reads German data saying crime is down to lowest levels since 1992. Then reads POTUS tweet this morning saying crime is way up. What gives? Sanders doesn't answer because she says she has not seen the German government data.

Trump’s favorite paper’s edit-heads not mincing words “It’s not just that this looks terrible in the eyes of the world. It is terrible: at least 2,000 children ripped from their parents’ arms, sometimes literally, in just the first six weeks.” https://t.co/GnMkwPvFi4

Microtargeting lies based on demographics was the Trump campaign's secret sauce after all.

Trump told senators today he would shut down government if not given all his money for the wall. He does not want to cave to pressure on separations, telling advisers in recent weeks that he looks "weak" on immigration. New w/@philiprucker & @seungminkim: https://t.co/D3dneGxI5w

Behind the scenes at the White House, aides scrambled Monday to manage the public relations fallout and rally support for their policy. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s daily briefing, first scheduled for 1:15 p.m., was pushed back to 3:30 p.m., then to 4, then to 5, so Nielsen could field questions at the lectern. She was at the White House around 1 p.m. doing extensive prep for the briefing and met with Trump at 3, according to a White House official.

Reposted from below. Nielson was prepped before she made that shitshow press presentation.

Repost because I think we all need a lit a bit of a smile and it made me smile if just for a small bit.

I really, REALLY need a break from this…so I’m watching anything else but more political news, and watching some of the MTV Movie/TV Awards….

    And this happened:

Chadwick Boseman won for best Hero for Black Panther and her did this:

Chadiwick said we should honor real life heroes as well. So he called up James Shaw Jr and gave the award to him and thanked him for his real world heroism!!!

I needed this smile at a time like this!

I’m curious about Trump’s announcement today about the “Space Force” and how it was going to be “separate but equal” from the “Air Force”.

Without using the mighty google (I’m lazier than normal tonight, or am just outrage exhausted), I’m trying to think of how the phrase “separate but equal” has ever been used in a positive way … or is Trump just letting his Plessy v. Ferguson freak flag fly?

    Kevin Drum nails it:

Donald Trump has made plain what’s long lurked barely below the surface of American politics: it’s not so much a contest between liberal and conservative as it is between kindness and meanness. God knows, not every liberal is kind and not every conservative is mean. But that’s sure the way to bet these days.

Republicans are mean and getting meaner. It’s now the foundation of their party, and Trump has decided to make it a selling point, not something to be ashamed of. They’re just plain mean and they’re proud of it.

That is good. It’s interesting politically, too. If you look at the higher profile midterm D winners so far they have one thing in common- they’re decent. They’re not mean-spirited, nasty assholes. That’s the contrast.

You can run against the Trumpians on just “I’m a fairly decent person” and it’s this HUGE contrast.

@M4: Yes. Today’s new has just filled me with rage. I try to get away and I can’t.

Tried to go on facebook so I could see pictures of nieces and nephews. Instead got a BernieBro high school friend yelling about the family separation mess. She was attacked by a Trumper who said this is all Clinton’s fault because of a bill he signed in 1997. and her response was..

“I’m not taking sides. It’s both parties fault.” I

I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how to tell her everything that’s wrong with that statement before realizing I’d done this before with her several times and she never learns. I’m thinking about unfriending her entirely, because not only is she aggressively stupid (though well meaning), shes completely bought into propaganda and proselytizes it. There’s no way to reach her.

And that makes me angrier, I think. It shouldn’t be this hard to get people (allies, even) to stop being so stupid, but it is.

The Chief of Staff is kinda pricing impeachment in

ut Kelly’s status in the White House has changed in recent months, and he and the president are now seen as barely tolerating one another. According to four people close to Kelly, the former Marine general has largely yielded his role as the enforcer in the West Wing as his relationship with Trump has soured. While Kelly himself once believed he stood between Trump and chaos, he has told at least one person close to him that he may as well let the president do what he wants, even if it leads to impeachment – at least this chapter of American history would come to a close.
In recent months , his Secret Service detail has often been spotted standing outside the gym in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the middle of the day – and White House officials who pass it on the way to meetings view his late morning workouts as an indication of him having thrown in the towel on trying to have any control inside the West Wing.

I just used my mostly defunct Twitter account to ask if she’s bringing her kids to CA with her so she can enroll them in that great “summer camp.” Because fuck that motherfucking asshole.

    @Adam L Silverman:

They show the President happy pictures of children playing outside, so that’s what he sees so that’s what he knows. Because he’s 6 years old, or a moron, so we can’t hold him responsible for anything. He didn’t mean it! It’s just that people showed him pictures!

They’re still not getting it. The ISSUE is taking them away from their families. It doesn’t matter if they give them a soccer ball! They took their parents away.

    @Mnemosyne:

Tell her 8 month olds don’t go to summer camp. Maybe hers do, but normal people don’t send babies and toddlers to summer camp. They get sad. They want their parents. That’s the thing with them- adults aren’t interchangeable. They need certain adults. Their parents.

    Gen. Michael Hayden went there…

“I showed the picture in 1944, but my story is Berlin 1933. You had a new government in power with a cult of personality, a cult of nativism, a cult of untruth, a cult where it was acceptable to punish the marginalized segments of society. I’m not saying our needle is in the red. I’m not saying we’re becoming nazis. What I was trying to say was the needle is moving in the wrong direction. I’m saying the skies are darkening.”

But by raising this again and again they are making us live in his world. I don’t have to live in his world and I won’t.

There is objective reality. Whatever lies these people are telling him he is still responsible for his actions. They keep saying they won’t go to intent, but they DO go to intent. They constantly tell us he doesn’t really mean it. It doesn’t matter what he intends or what bullshit he believes. What matters is what he did and when happened. Those are facts. The rest is inside his head and I don’t want to live there.

Holy Hell. I just watched that audio of the children crying in detention.

This is a shit storm of craven immorality. These people are ghouls. I couldn’t make it to the end. I burst into tears at 6 minutes. If you understand Spanish…this shit is fucking brutal. And new polling from Quinnpac:
55% of Republicans approve of this policy
    and 27% of all Americans.
10’s of millions of ghouls. Our relatives, our neighbors, our co-workers, our former school mates…ghouls.

@Adam L Silverman: leave her daughter out of it, pretty sure she’s suffered enough…I’d like to see all these apologists, enablers and “policy makers” caged in the same conditions without contact with friends / family …no telephone ECT.

Pretty sure without looking very hard you’d find a lot more law breaking by them that isn’t a misdemeanor like crossing a “border”.

@magurakurin: Anyone who’s ever raised or baby sat little kids (really little ones) knows that tiny underlip quivering wail in that tape. I just fell apart. All I could see was my own little one, a couple of decades ago, when something really, really hurt her, as in, hurt her soul. But then, I was there. These small helpless ones don’t have a parent, and their parents hell is imagining the kids’ distress.

I’ve gone through “I can’t even” and come out the other side.

Kelly’s status in the White House has changed in recent months, and he and the president are now seen as barely tolerating one another

He agrees with everything trump does. Pure propaganda for Kelly so he can walk away from the moron without having to pay for what he has done.

THANK YOU for saying this. As a (former) foster parent, I can say without hesitation that removing kids from their parents (even if it’s for a good reason!) is a trauma they will struggle to overcome the rest of their lives. Trump is psychologically torturing kids as leverage to get his wall. That’s what this comes down to. They could be put up at one of his stupid luxury resorts, and he would still be torturing them.

I did not read the article — I can’t stand seeing that motherfucker’s face or hearing his voice, I ain’t gonna seek it out on purpose — so it may be a case of CNN getting the vapors. But, still …

    Summer camp?

When our younger was six she went to a familiar, beautiful summer family camp with her dad and her 8-yr-old sister. (I stayed home to finish some classes.) She was surrounded by people she’d known all her short life — kind people who knew her well and were ready to look out for her. I remember telling some friend moms to please do me a favor and brush her hair every couple of days b/c I knew her dad wouldn’t do it. And they did.

Toward the end of the week the phone rang one night; she was ok but she just wanted her mom. Both of us knew exactly where the other one was all that week, and we knew exactly when we’d see each other again, and we knew exactly how to get in touch if we needed to. That’s what summer camp is like.

Today, btw, is my birthday. She’s 28 now, and for a gift she gave a donation in my name to one of the orgs trying to provide legal support for the families.

Summer camp? Tick Tock, motherfuckers. We are coming for you.

@MobileForkbeard: Really that hard to sneer at them and say “So you know separating families is pure Nazi death camp evil, yet you still support Trump. I see, that’s all I need to know” Don’t try to correct them, just mock their lies for being lies. They are trying to shock everyone else to silence so they don’t have to think, shock them back.
