Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

This really is a full service blog.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

But I don’t think Trump hires only the best people:

Joseph W. Hagin, a deputy chief of staff to President Trump and one of the most seasoned government veterans on a team populated mainly by newcomers with little if any prior experience in the White House, plans to step down next month.

Mr. Hagin has run White House operations for Mr. Trump for 17 months, overseeing the daily administration of a building often whipsawed by chaos generated by the president. Just this month, Mr. Hagin led a delegation of officials in Singapore who arranged the logistics of Mr. Trump’s landmark summit meeting with Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader.

The NY Times fails to mention WHY he might be leaving, so we’ll leave that up to Buzzfeed:

Igtet, however, had other interests outside recovering Libyan riches, including one at the center of a major sex-trafficking case. Igtet was deeply involved in NXIVM, the celebrity “sex cult” whose leadership is now under federal indictment, two sources said. Igtet proselytized for the group, BuzzFeed News has learned, while his wife, the heir Sara Bronfman, reportedly kept the cult afloat with tens of millions of dollars.

And in 2013 — as Hagin’s future boss was railing against the Obama administration over the 2012 terrorist attack on the US embassy in Benghazi that killed a US ambassador — Igtet met with the man the US believed to be the mastermind of the attack, who has since been convicted on terrorism charges.

But Hagin’s firm, seeing the chance to reap millions, viewed Igtet as a golden goose and continued to work with the couple even as their associations with NXIVM became increasingly public.

Oh.

Meanwhile, another one of Trump’s finest is making news tonight:

.@Zac_Petkanas says on Fox News a 10-year-old girl with Down Syndrome was separated from her mother at the border.

Corey Lewandowski responds: "Womp womp." pic.twitter.com/cZMXWmwbjw

— Jon Passantino (@passantino) June 19, 2018

I can’t wait for the day when this Lewandowski asshole gets road rage and fucks with the wrong person and gets what he so richly deserves.

Such people are now mainstream. And more and more are signing up:

“University professors, students, intellectuals were turning Nazi, Iron Guards, one after the other. At the beginning, certainly they were not Nazis. We were some fifteen people who used to get together to discuss, to try to find arguments opposing theirs. It was not easy…From time to time, one of our friends said: ‘I don’t agree with them, to be sure, but on certain points, nevertheless, I must admit, for example, the Jews…’, etc. And this was a symptom. Three weeks later, this man would become a Nazi. He was caught in the mechanism, he accepted everything, he became a rhinoceros. Toward the end, we were only three or four to have resisted.” — Eugene Ionescu, 1970

Trump seems to be saying more and more things that aren’t true

    Wapo headline.

    Baby steps.

Since Saturday, Trump has tweeted false or misleading information at least seven times on the topic of immigration and at least six times on a Justice Department inspector general report into the FBI’s handling of its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server. That’s more than a dozen obfuscations on just two central topics — a figure that does not include falsehoods on other issues, whether in tweets or public remarks.

    And the piece de resistance:

It’s extraordinary how he is completely indifferent to truth. There’s just no relationship between his statements — anything he utters — and the actual truth of the matter,” said Thomas Murray, president emeritus of the Hastings Center, the founding institution in the field of bioethics. “As far as I can tell, the best way to understand anything he says is what will best serve his interests in the moment. It’s irrespective to any version of the truth.”

Love him or hate him, Michael Avenatti’s got reality show instincts better than Twitler’s. Here he tweets a letter from a mother to her 6-year-old who was taken away from her for “a bath” two weeks ago. You don’t even need to be able to read Spanish, just look at her little drawings to be appalled that they are not together. Also, it certainly doesn’t fit the administration’s narrative that these are illiterate useless people trying to come in.

Here is a letter my client Levis just wrote to her 6 yr old son Samir, whom she has not seen or comm with in over 2 weeks. They told her he was being taken for a “bath” & would be brought right back. He is a gentle boy and very attached to his mother. For the GOP and Trumpsters, there is a limited liability doctrine for bad people and bad countries. If you can make some money with them, you are dealing with the holding company, not the bad entity itself. So perfectly OK to damn and smear people you can associate with the bad thing, but OK to make lots of dough with the same bad thing, since for that purpose it is a different thing, not bad at all. See? Easy.

I just got home and posted this on a probably dead thread so I’m sticking it here as well.

I hate to sound like or be a downer. I have to stay positive because of my health, falling off that cliff of despair makes me far worse than a normal crappy day. It makes me physically sicker. Yesterday morning I couldn’t type. I tried but my fingers wouldn’t stay on the keys and I couldn’t control where they went. That’s my life, it’s OK, that’s how it is. No one did this to me, it isn’t anyones fault. It’s shit but it’s life. Some are better than mine, some are far worse.

But things we can control, things we can make better, even if only a little bit, to turn around and make those far, far worse because you are a sick fuck of a human being and you have to bring along a crew of like minded asswipes? And they don’t even seem to be in it for the money. WHATTHEEVERLOVINGFUCK.

    Far,
    We’ve been traveling far
    Without a home
    But not without a star

    Free,
    Only want to be free
    We huddle close
    Hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
    They’re coming to America
    Never looking back again,
    They’re coming to America

    Home
Don’t it seem so far away
    Oh, we’re traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

    Home
To a new and a shiny place
Make our bed and we’ll say our grace
    Freedom’s light burning warm

    Fuck the New York Times

    From HuffPo.

Bowing to pressure from the White House, The New York Times did not include in its news podcast an audio clip from an on-the-record interview with Stephen Miller, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump.

The audio recording stemmed from a June 16 story in the paper, “How Trump Came to Enforce a Practice of Separating Migrant Families.” According to Times reporters Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Michael Shear, Miller was instrumental in Trump’s decision to implement a zero-tolerance immigration policy that had been considered but ultimately deemed inhumane by previous administrations. …

Michael Barbaro, who hosts “The Daily” podcast for the Times, said in Tuesday’s episode that he intended to play the audio for a segment on the immigration crisis until Davis heard that the White House was “not at all comfortable” with Miller’s voice being featured on the podcast. …

Since the interview was on the record, the White House was aware that anything Miller said could appear in The New York Times. But Davis said the White House officials felt they should have been told if the audio recording might be used outside of a written story.

“When they found out that his voice was actually going to be on a podcast discussing this, they were not happy about it. So they asked us not to use it,” Davis said.

The Times addressed the White House request in a statement posted to Twitter.

“While Miller’s comments were on the record, we realized that the ground rules for the original interview were not clear, and so we made a decision not to run the audio,” the outlet said, adding that its reporters “made extensive use of the interview in both the original weekend story and The Daily.”

Easier for Trump to label a written interview as fake news if there is not audio to contradict his lie.

I just saw Chet Murthy’s comment in another thread about Warsan Shire’s poem, “Home.” Shire is Somali-British and write the poetry for Beyonce’s Lemonade album.

Her words are like a punch in the gut and she captures perfectly why people leave home even when they are not
    welcome where they are going.

I’l except the first part below (read the rest at the link above):

    no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark
you only run for the border
when you see the whole city running as well

your neighbors running faster than you
    breath bloody in their throats
the boy you went to school with
who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory
is holding a gun bigger than his body
    you only leave home
when home won’t let you stay.

no one leaves home unless home chases you
    fire under feet
    hot blood in your belly
it’s not something you ever thought of doing
until the blade burnt threats into
    your neck
and even then you carried the anthem under
    your breath
only tearing up your passport in an airport toilets
sobbing as each mouthful of paper
made it clear that you wouldn’t be going back.

    you have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land
    no one burns their palms
    under trains
    beneath carriages
no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck
feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled
    means something more than journey.
    no one crawls under fences
no one wants to be beaten
    pitied

    no one chooses refugee camps
    or strip searches where your
    body is left aching
    or prison,
    because prison is safer
    than a city of fire
    and one prison guard
    in the night
    is better than a truckload
of men who look like your father
    no one could take it
    no one could stomach it
no one skin would be tough enough

Well I’m days away from turning 69 yrs old. I never really thought I’d get this far. I wonder how many people think that way. Now I want to see how far I can get, if for no other reason than to keep poking a very sharp, if imaginary, stick in the shitheads that think that making people miserable is fun. Miserable sucks donkey balls. Fuck those assholes.

I remember as a kid thinking that I would be ancient when I reached 40. I’m well past that now. I’ve had a few health challenges, including significant dental work just today. But I’m hoping to be able to contribute even a little something to the battles ahead.

Hope you have a happy birthday in the days ahead and whatever you need to keep on keeping on.

I think of myself as someone with a fairly good imagination, but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that Barack Obama would be succeeded by someone as stone cold stupid and mentally deranged as Donald Trump.

I’m involved in a lawsuit, I was in court today for three hours, during a break, I wandered outside, there was a construction site across the street, I was looking at the Cat version of the old Melroe Bobcat. The operator was a Mexican American guy. We had a nice talk, I told him I used to run an original when i worked on construction in college. We got around to trump, he said, “Man if this shit had been going on when my parents crossed, I’d be fucked.”

Oh, I agree he’s a throwback and a monster. Neanderthals weren’t knuckledraggers, and were undoubtedly smarter than Trump. But they would let him hang with them out of pity. They also probably had more soul than him, also.

Now that you mention it, I vaguely recall a NY Times article from a few months ago discussing art work created by Neanderthals. I don’t believe Trump has a creative bone in his body, so based on that metric alone Neanderthals were superior to him.

I also had recent dental work done myself and it’s a bitch. I’ll be glad when it’s over.

This is how the Trump people act in public, on television. Imagine the discussions in that White House. No one must be safe from their childish, vindictive nastiness. I can’t even imagine how these children were talked about when they were cooking up this cruelty. They discussed it for months. The “infestation” – these children.

@Ruckus: Oh dear. I know you don’t like harping on your big health issue — I am not really sure what it is, and respect your privacy.

But I hope you have an OT who is helping you find tricks around your new limitations. For instance, what pops into mind for days typing isn’t happening is a voice activated system (yeah, I know they can have glitches). A good OT will have lots of work arounds.

We all have to find ways to take care of ourselves nowadays, we are of no use if we internalize all the despair. That’s what they want, for us to give up. Let’s not any of us do that.

They’re just so ungenerous, the Trumps and their awful hires. They;ve been given so much and they’re so crabbed and stingy. All they talk about is people TAKING things from them. How much do they need? What would be enough to make them grateful and easy with the idea that someone else might get something? There’s plenty of fucking room in this country. There’s who areas of the midwest that are DYING for young people. No one will take anything from them. It doesn;t have to be zero sum. At this point I would trade the whole pack of them for one of these kids- who have to be tough and brave to get here in the first place, tougher and braver than any of these coddled, privileged blabbermouths who have never wanted for anything a day in their lives.

    @Ohio Mom:
    Primarily why I vent here.
One of my docs thinks I may have Parkinson’s. I have a bunch of the symptoms, what I think was a problem 8-9 months ago was the stage of my symptoms. Things have gotten worse and on some days, it’s bad. Best explanation I’ve come up with about how it feels constantly is it’s like a car that is supposed to idle at 800 RPM, but is idling at 1800 RPM. There is just a constant level of stress/movement going on. That’s just the every day stuff. There are lots of moving bits and pieces. And some days, like yesterday, the tremors, which I’ve had for a while and which are getting worse, just take over. Last Thursday I had to ask a coworker do something for me because I couldn’t control my fingers/hands well or safely enough. As I stated above, it is what it is. The VA will most likely figure it out, it just takes a while. But I wonder what I’ll do if the shitgibbon and friends tries to cut back the VA in the way they are trying to cut back Medicare or SS? Cutting back any of those would make my life untenable. And I doubt I’d be happy about that.

I really can’t think of anything worse for an over privileged asswipe than to be in prison. Then they find out how good they used to think they didn’t have it. And of course I’m not talking about one of those low risk, stuck in a nice beach community bullshit jails. I’m talking about any big city jail or a county jail like that fuckstick in AZ ran. A peanut butter sandwich on 2 day old white bread with no butter for lunch or surprise chill for dinner, lights out a 9, lights on at 6, community showers/toilets….. Damn that sounds a lot like the navy I was in. OK there the bread got to 10 days old before they ran out and had to make some. Back to today. I don’t want these asswipes to be hung, I want them all to live out their lives in the same conditions that they are keeping innocent kids in. I want them to never have another free day. And I normally disapprove of long sentences. No disapproval for this bunches overly long sentences.

They are so corrupt that the story about Wilbur Ross shorting stock in a shipping company that did “substantial business with a Russian energy firm called Sibur, whose owners include Putin’s son-in-law Kirill Shamalov and Gennady Timchenko, a Russian oligarch”* (the day after he learned the NYT was writing a story) is struggling for space and attention.

@Ruckus: Don’t want to bother you with questions you’re probably tired of. So it’s OK to ignore these if you prefer — Has anyone suggested a support group for (possible) Parkinsons? Has any doctor suggested medication? I have two friends with it. One was initially misdiagnosed with Lyme, so the Parkinsons diagnosis was relatively late. (Btw Have you been tested for Lyme?)
