Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

In my day, never was longer.

The willow is too close to the house.

I really should read my own blog.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

It’s the corruption, stupid.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

It’s all good fun until you get Floriduh! Man all over your windshield…

Shocking video shows man riding on hood of a car while traveling down I-95 in Miami, Florida. The car eventually exited the highway. https://t.co/5PIvhN9gbO pic.twitter.com/4rkeekxs9t

— ABC News (@ABC) June 25, 2018

From WSVN 7 News in Miami:

NORTH MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Drivers on Interstate 95 were greeted with an odd sight after a car was seen flying down the highway with a man on the hood.

Twitter user @danimidah shared the video after he saw the car heading southbound near Ives Dairy Road on Sunday around 8 p.m.

The unidentified man could be seen clutching onto the hood of the black car, which was going around 70 miles per hour.

Nineteen-year-old Daniel Midah said he’s the man who shot the viral video.

Speaking to 7News, Midah said he was driving down I-95 when he turned his head and noticed the bizarre situation.

“I was like no one is going to believe me if I tell anyone,” he said, “so I took out my phone and just started recording.”

Midah said he was scared the entire time as he kept the camera rolling.

“It’s really insane, it’s surreal,” he said.

Midah said a woman was behind the wheel as the man gripped the car with one hand and held a cellphone with the other.

Midah called 911 after recording the viral video, fearing the driver could swerve and hit his car or the man could fall off into the street.

“It was kind of dangerous, not just for them, but for everybody around,” said Midah.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, but said they discourage anybody from taking video while driving.

According to FHP, the man on the hood of the car and the driver could be cited.

It is unknown if this was a lovers’ quarrel gone wrong.

“I don’t know if the guy was there willingly, if the guy was there on accident, if he just hopped on and she drove off,” said Midah.

Since sharing his tweet, Midah’s post was shared more than 14,000 times, garnering over 600,000 views.

I’d just like to highlight this part of the report from WSVN:

According to FHP, the man on the hood of the car and the driver could be cited.

Ya think?

Tune in tomorrow night to see what Floriduh! Man or Woman or Toddler or Iguana will do next… Same Floriduh! time, same Floriduh! station!

    the
    Right thing to do

The political press and the establishment class have been alarmed and confused by a restaurant owner’s refusal to serve White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders this past weekend. Wasn’t this a betrayal of the basic norms that hold society together? Won’t it just offend and energize President Trump’s base going into the 2018 midterms? Doesn’t targeting Sanders — or Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who fled a Mexican restaurant last week after being confronted by chanting protesters — just mimic Trump’s own regrettable efforts to undermine civility?

A better question for the pundits, which might help clear things up for them, is this: What makes you think this is any of your business?

Children, some still in diapers, have been seized from their parents by the government and locked in cages, with no clear way to reunite them with their families afterward. That situation might seem more urgent, in itself, than the question of how people chose to react to the government seizing children and locking them in cages. Yet here we are, caught up in this fuss over — manners? Civility?

What happened at the Red Hen in Lexington, Va., was not a contest between political parties, or between designated proxies of political parties. It was a private citizen telling a presidential administration official to go away, out of disgust with the fact that the administration is seizing children from their parents and locking them in cages and barring transgender people from military service. Likewise, the protesters who yelled at Nielsen were not aiming to be part of a normal political process, but to respond to extraordinary events with extraordinary actions.

The self-appointed civility police, the voices of respectable political journalism, are unable to understand this. To the extent that they grasp that there is a crisis, the crisis is that somehow, regrettably, the nation has stopped engaging in politics as usual — and so the answer must be to insist that everyone work together and act as if things are normal, which will restore the old standards of behavior. Be deferential and polite, trust our institutions and wait for a better democratic republic to take shape around you.

I saw a dude on a motorcycle doing a wheelie for about half a mile on the Dolphin expressway a while back. Had to try to protect an elderly woman when a brawl over jealousy broke out at an adjacent booth at Denny’s and the whole staff ran out.

Got kicked out a hospital chapel during a flood because I needed a place to sleep while my lover was in Neuro ICU, and I couldn’t get back to my hotel. Nothing about Florida will ever surprise me.

Remember Milo? He’s trying to get back into Daddy’s good graces by calling for vigilantes to gun down journalists. (New Republic)

Observer is reporting that Yiannopoulos’ descent into the political gutter continues apace. Asked by Observer to comment on a story, Yiannopoulos texted, “I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight.” He sent a similar comment to a Daily Beast writer.

Yiannopoulos has also sent anti-Semitic messages to the writer and fact checker Talia Lavin. “This past weekend, the nationalist bragged on Facebook and Instagram that he’d sent $14.88 to The New Yorker‘s former fact checker Talia Lavin,” Observer notes. (1488 being a notorious code used by white supremacists to hail each other).

Amid the current brouhaha over civility, it is important to remember that so noxious a figure as Yiannopoulos was once courted and promoted by a White House aide and major Republican donors.

Give it up, kid. You’ve served your purpose. Twitler has the whole Republican party, he doesn’t need you.

I saw a Harley get rear ended by a pickup in Phoenix, the pickup was probably going 75 when he passed me on the Freeway. The Harley was going 65 or so. When the truck hit the bike, it scooted forward, the rider didn’t lose it right away, the rear wheel was damaged and the bike started to wiggle and swerve, he got it slowed down quite a bit before he went down. The rider landed on his ass on the highway and skidded for about 100 feet. The asshole in the truck kept on going. The Harley guy was scraped, bleeding and dazed. He was very, very lucky. A couple got the license number of the pickup and the driver was arrested, DUI, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident. And the ass had his kids in the truck. When it happened I thought the Harley guy was a dead man for sure.

I for one, always do a last round up of news on the internet machine so I have happy dreams at night. This Rogin guy seems to be a WaPo pundit and political analyst. So, not sure he is as reliable as an actual reporter.
With Trump it might be some momentary BS and we never hear about it again, if it’s true. On the other hand, even apart from Putin’s sponsorship of the a-hole, this is BS dimwit conman thinking that has been deep in the marrow of Trump’s bones for 40 years. (Edit: see, the damn world has been taking the US to the cleaners since forever, so we could save a few bucks sitting on the sidelines, right? But, everyone would still do whatever we tell them to because we are big and powerful and top, terrific, believe me.)

    @joshrogin
In a private meeting, Swedish PM Stefan Lofven explained to Trump Sweden is not a member of NATO, but sometimes partners with the alliance. Trump responded that the U.S. should consider the same approach.

REPORTER (animatedly): Here’s a story about a missing girl.

NEWSPAPER EDITOR (dismissively) : That’s not news. Find her; that’ll be news.

Ran across a YTube the other day about moron supercar drivers. About 1/2 hr of idiots crashing 6-9 hundred hp cars because they have not one clue what to do. And most of them seemed to be laughing about it at the time.
    Spoiled rich kids indeed.

I assume Amir might be posting about this shortly, but I just read that the police raids on the former PM of Malaysia netted more than $200 million, including $13 million in Hermès handbags.

    @Ruckus:

Cars today, even regular everyday cars are fast, a Camrey V6 is faster than any of the muscle cars from the 60’s, both zero to 60 and in the 1/4 mile. When you step up to performance cars today you’re talking really, really fast. Morons buy those cars and do stupid shit like shut off the traction controls. I had a 2007 Z51 Corvette, with the traction controls shut off you could destroy the rear tires almost instantly. I have a pal who owns a Challenger Hellcat, 700 plus horsepower, with the traction controls off you can break the rear wheels loose at 70mph. If you don’t know what you’re doing you’re in deep shit. The first new car I owned was a 69 Camaro Z28, a fast and good handling car for it’s day, My Grand Cherokee 4×4 is 2 sec faster zero to 60 than the Camaro and even with the Hemi V8 it gets better mileage.

So after today’s “Supreme Court” ruling, how long before Stephen Miller decides that he wants to remove all Muslims, excuse me, people born in certain countries, from their positions in the federal government? (That was about the first thing the Nazis did to Jews.)

@Jager: That’s nasty. As a better story, I saw some little car and a Mercedes have a rear-ender in Scheveningen c. 1990. The Mercedes hit the little car. Which basically got the info and drove away. The Mercedes had to be towed away, I think its front axle broke. It would make a better story if I’d seen the actual make of the little car. But oh yeah, did I laugh.

Since this is an open thread, two things: considering Obama was nice enough to pardon her, do you think Chelsea Manning ever feels guilty cashing Putin’s checks?

    Nah, me neither;)

Federal Judge orders halt to family separations

The Trump administration has 30 days to reunite migrant families split up by immigration authorities, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, in a rebuke that blocked the administration from continuing the widely reviled practice.

The injunction signed by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw temporarily blocks family separations while a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union continues, and requires the government to put together a plan to expedite reunifications. For children younger than 5 years old, the government has only 14 days to put them back into the care of their parents.

“This practice of separating class members from their minor children, and failing to reunify class members with those children, without any showing the parent is unfit or presents a danger to the child is sufficient to find Plaintiffs have a likelihood of success on their due process claim,” Judge Sabraw wrote.

Sabraw described the confusion surrounding the family separation policy, the lack of an established process to reunite parents with their children and last week’s hastily crafted executive order substituting family separations with large-scale family detention as “reactive governance” designed to “address a chaotic circumstance of the Government’s own making.”

@sukabi: Very well said. The fact that our current government thinks it’s perfectly okay to kidnap and detain children should be the only point of discussion for the MSM. Civility ended when Trump cane down those escalators and called Mexicans rapists.

I don’t understand how the car hood rider’s flip-flops stay on the whole time. I also don’t understand how the car hood rider stayed on the whole time. Thirdly, I don’t understand why the jerkass that shot the video (while driving, no less!) didn’t call 911 right away! Dick
