Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

I was promised a recession.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Consistently wrong since 2002

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

We still have time to mess this up!

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Maybe it was entirely coincidental that failed presidential candidate & full-time grifter Gov. “Gimme The” Mike Huckabee’s daughter schlepped her coterie out to a venue where she could reasonably expect that some fellow diner or startled waiter would say something she could choose to interpret as ‘incivil’. But since she’s both a PR professional with a history of playing this game, and from a faith tradition that teaches “witnessing to the unbeliever” as a method of “Godly testimony” (i.e., establishing one’s own social credentials by being obnoxious to people who can’t argue back)… I’mma go with the guess that this was as deliberate a performance as Mike Pence dragging the Secret Service and the national media out to that Colts game so he could stomp out in a hissy during the Anthem.

White House officials don’t get to gin up cultural division for sport and then complain it’s unfair for them to face cultural backlash when they’re out in public. I would love to see a less politicized social sphere. The Trump WH is the #1 enemy of that objective.

Toronto cannot take any more asylum seekers, mayor warns

Canada’s biggest city is unable to accommodate any more asylum seekers, Toronto’s mayor has warned, after temporary resettlements used to house them reached near full capacity.

“We have exhausted our available sites, our resources and our personnel,” Mayor John Tory said on Tuesday, as he sought help from provincial and federal governments to resettle new arrivals.

This comes after Toronto activated an emergency contingency plan in May to shelter refugee claimants as it was bracing for an influx of migrants over the summer.

The rare move underscored the strain caused by the inflow of asylum seekers in Canada, which has seen more than 30,000 asylum seekers illegally crossing the Canada-US border since Donald Trump came to office last year.

Heard an interesting radio news interview on the manifold and outrageous lies Trumpsters and GOPers have been telling about immigration while driving this morning.
One point the reporter made was that failed policy that cited international drug and human trafficking and blaming immigrants for MS-13 has been source of failed policy ever since the GW administration.

MS-13 originated in the US, and has such a solid base in US that it is impossible, not effective, pointless, to deal with it as an immigration issue. Yet, the reporter said that is exactly what GW, Obama, and now Trump have done. Probably some understandable reasons why GW and Obama admins had poor policies, Trump is a different case altogether.

Reporter said MS-13 doesn’t have a big presence in international drug trade, and actually no detectable presence at all in what very minor and small level of human trafficking exists in undocumented adults with kids crossing the border, either for illegal entry or seeking asylum. MS-13 is mainly or US born and bred problem, that has morphed into international dimensions largely due to failures in US domestic policy.

So I sat through a trailer for Jennifer Garner’s new action flick, “Peppermint”.

It’s revenge porn, in which JG turns into a vigilante crime-stopper, after the Hispanic drug cartels kill her little girl (after whom the movie is named).

It was very striking to me to see a Hispanic gang playing the same role for Hollywood that, 15 years ago, would have been played by Middle Eastern Terrorists. Same damned racist role of being the brown-skinned bad-guys with the scary foreign accents.

How thoroughly did Obama defeat Al Qaeda and Isis?

So thoroughly that the Republicans had to make up new racist tropes in order to terrorize the Fox News audience. After Obama killed Bin Laden and decimated Isis, A-rabs just were not scary enough anymore. Couldn’t move the rubes to the voting booths with Islamic sounding names.

So, now it’s MS-13. The new fabricated nightmare for your elderly relatives who were never in danger in any case, but are easily conned out of their donations, their votes, and their freedom.

    FYWP

A military parade requested by Donald Trump will take place in November on Veterans Day in Washington D.C., but to minimize damage to roads it will not include tanks, a Pentagon memo released on Friday said.

Last month Trump asked the Pentagon to explore a parade in celebration of American troops, after the Republican president marveled at the Bastille Day military parade he attended in Paris last year.

The memo listed a number of guidelines for the parade on Nov. 11 and said the parade route will be from the White House to the Capitol and have a “heavy air component at the end of the parade.”

“Include wheeled vehicles only, no tanks – consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure,” the memo said.

Found a non paywall. Older date link.

I’m not sure why this story is slipping under the radar, but Trump in a speech in Duluth on June 20, bragged about his success at already having secured the remains of US troops returned from North Korea.

We got back our great, fallen heroes, the remains. In fact today already 200 have been sent back.
    http://www.wbur.org/npr/622238086/fact-check-president-trumps-duluth-rally-claims

    Of course he was lying:

Nobody here [in Seoul] had heard about the return of the remains since Trump had taken credit for getting Kim to agree to a fourth point on the slim statement they signed at the Singapore summit on June 12: “The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.”

Since then, the North Koreans have conducted a dilatory process leading at last to an understanding by the U.S. command that the Kim regime is poised to return maybe 200 remains, maybe more, maybe less.
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-falls-for-kim-jong-uns-latest-bait-and-switch

Trump has constantly bragged that he has been the first president to get North Korea to come to the table. The reality is the exact opposite: North Korea has finally found a president dumb enough to go to the table.

There were good reasons for previous administrations choosing not to have unconditional discussions with North Korea. Trump has been played like a fiddle.

True enough, but Virginia *is* a blue state at this point, despite being labeled “purple” by the media. It is flipped but good.

Repubs ran Lyin’ Ed Gillespie, supposed moderate, who tried a little “trumpov lite” and drove away a couple extra percentage points of GOP voters.

This time, they’re running “Trumpovus Maxiumus” Corey Stewart and they’re going to do about the same, maybe a point or two worse.

Let’s see, a few primaries today, right? So the threads will be heating up. I’m leaving a bit early today, so since this is an Open thread, let me toss in a little whimsy.

I had some fun reading about the wedding of the two actors from Game of Thrones

Like something out of a fan fiction—I see and respect you, Wattpad writers—Kit Harington, the real Jon Snow, and Rose Leslie, Ygritte, tied the knot in her native Scotland over the weekend. (And for the real nerds: without an arrow in sight.)
It was a hella cute affair and most of the Game of Thrones fam was in attendance; you better believe they brought the looks

It’s funny. Rose Leslie played a servant on Downton Abbey and an uncivilized Wilding on Game of Thrones, and yet she comes from a posh Scottish family. This was underscored in a discussion about one of the guests, Richard Madden, another actor from Thrones, who came dressed in a kilt.

It was appropriate. Madden is basically Glaswegian, and this was a wedding of the daughter of the Aberdeenshire Chieftain of Clan Leslie. As you’d expect, the latter and several of his male relatives wore their clan tartans to this shindig, so Madden was far from alone.

I figured that the groom, actor Kit Harrington, was marrying up. But it turns out that he is the second son of the 15th Baronet Harrington, so once again, the elites are breeding amongst themselves. And the wedding party was held in one of the castles owned by the bride’s family. I guess you can’t have too many castles.

The federal debt is headed for the highest levels since World War II, CBO says

Government debt is on track to hit historically high levels and at its current growth rate will be nearly equal in size to the U.S. economy by 2028, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday.

By the end of this year, the ratio of federal debt to the United States’ gross domestic product will reach 78 percent, according to the CBO, the highest ratio since 1950.

The debt is projected to grow to 96 percent of GDP by 2028 before eventually surpassing the historical high of 106 percent it reached in 1946.

    One more bit of whimsy….

Well, I’ve seen Incredibles 2 twice now (something I rarely do these days) and enjoyed it immensely both times. The first time I just enjoyed watching the story unfold, including the action set pieces and the new adventures of favorite characters. There was a moment during the first Incredibles movie where I forgot that I was watching animation and felt I was just watching a well done caper or action movie (especially during the assault on the bad guy’s island lair). The second movie is not quite that magical, but it is still a superior piece of movie animation.

This time around, I was paying more attention to the little details of the story telling and the wonderful ways the Pixar team uses animation to tell the story. I particularly liked how they put Elasti-girl (voiced by Holly Hunter) front and center and deepened our relationship to her by putting her in action sequences that emphasized her talents (and which also gave the animators room to … stretch out and have fun showcasing her powers and her fantabulous motorcycle) and by giving her some key supporting characters to bounce off of.

There is also some fantastic use of shadows and the placement of characters, which would represent some very intelligent moviemaking in a live action film, bringing together the work of a director, production designer, lighting people and cinematographers. That they took the time to do this in a freaking cartoon is goddam amazing.

    VERY MINOR SPOILER FOLLOWS:

Much of this shadow work involves the depiction of the talented sister of a billionaire industrialist who comes to the assistance of the Incredibles team. She prefers to quietly support her more ostentatious brother and so we often see her in a background shot, or sitting quietly out of the center of screen focus. I was aware of this the first time I saw the movie, but I didn’t realize how deftly these cinematic decisions were until I saw the film a second time.

Lastly, I wallowed in the fun, jazzy score by composer Michael Giacchino, and Gordon Goodwin, conductor, arranger, & orchestrator. It’s so much fun that little kids were dancing and bopping around to the music as the end credits rolled. Fortunately, the parents of these kids weren’t hot to hustle everybody out of the theater as soon as the movie ended.

All in all, a fun movie, even though it looks like the new Jurassic World movie is peeling off older kids and teens, in a battle of box office summer heavyweights.

Tyson Timbs would like his Land Rover back.

The State of Indiana took it, using a law that lets it seize vehicles used to transport illegal drugs. Last week, the Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the Constitution has anything to say about such civil forfeiture laws, which allow states and localities to take and keep private property used to commit crimes.

Mr. Timbs bought the Land Rover after his father died. The life insurance money amounted to around $73,000, and he spent $42,000 of it on the vehicle. He blew most of the rest on drugs.

“Unfortunately, I had a whole bunch of money, which isn’t a good idea for a drug addict to have,” Mr. Timbs recalled the other day. “I used a lot, and eventually the money ran out. It was an addict’s life.”

Mr. Timbs’s habit started with an opioid addiction and progressed to heroin. He used his Land Rover to get drugs and, on at least two occasions, to sell them. The buyers were undercover police officers.

Mr. Timbs pleaded guilty to one of the drug sales, in which $225 had changed hands, and he was sentenced to a year of house arrest followed by five years of probation. He also agreed to pay an array of fees and fines adding up to about $1,200.

But Indiana wanted more. Using the civil forfeiture law, it took the Land Rover.

Next SC case regarding asset seizures. Thomas might be the swing vote on this one (shockingly). Apparently even he sees something wrong with $225 drug crime leading to a $42,000 vehicle seizure.

@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?: actually it’s not bad. Lopez comes off as a very likeable and sympathetic character trying to make the best of bad situations and working to redeem herself.

Clarence Page is the latest Washington insider to clutch his pearls, and criticize Maxine Waters and protests with incivility:

To avoid risking a backlash, Democrats and other progressives should leave the rude politics to specialists, such as Trump, who often conducts his job like a troll-in-chief.

That’s why I can’t go along with Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for more harassment of Trump administration officials, even with the noble aim of protesting an inhumane immigration policy. “If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” the California Democrat said last weekend in a Los Angeles rally and again Sunday on MSNBC. “And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere. We’ve got to get the children connected to their parents.”

Fine. But there are smart ways and not-very-smart ways to pursue that aim…

I wonder if Page found MLK to be uppity as well.

@Major Major Major Major: Everything surrounding the job hunt are some of our culture’s most gratuitously cruel folk traditions. Really — think of how an anthropologist would describe the process.

For one, they might describe a headhunter as a type of shaman, with powers to communicate on a plane mere job-seeking mortals can’t, and as guides to job-seekers who are trying to enter new dimensions.

Then there is the aspect of having to wear special clothes, and knowing the secret passwords in response to the ritual questions (Tell me about yourself…what are you biggest weaknesses…why are you looking for a new position…where do you see yourself in five years…etc.).

Anyway, here in southwest Ohio, we’re pulling for you!

@Major Major Major Major: Oh I could go on and on. You are currently experiencing one of those rituals where the person on the cusp of something new is sent off into the wilderness by themselves — either to prove themselves worthy of being “promoted” (like a coming of age thing), or to engage in introspective meditation and prayer in preparation for their new role.

NO. Apologies are weakness to the GOP. Showing weakness to the GOP inevitably ends with them lunging for your throat.

1000x this. All you’ve done is given them a scalp. Worse, she’ll have to stay out of the public eye We should own whatever the fuck we said. Remember that the other side will warp anything into their favor. Maxine said and did nothing wrong. Fuck the democratic leadership. :)

@Major Major Major Major: It’s like the old joke:

What’s the difference between a computer person and a used care salesman?
The used car guy knows when he’s lying.

I’m guessing that the HR person was sure she could do that, but she’s not the top of the food chain, so she has no control over that. Come to think of it, that bodes well for any company… when the HR person doesn’t run everything. :-)

Sounds like this job is one you want, so I hope you get it.
