On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.
So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.
You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.
For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Just the awesome today. Thursday is the finale for the Ireland pictures, otmar Friday, and next week all kinds of goodness.
Today, pictures from valued commenter Joey Maloney.
I arrived in Hawaii today after the usual 30-hour flight from the other side of the world. I’ll have lots more pics soon, including probably a mini photo-essay on the many surreal features of the new international terminal at Incheon airport, but here’s an appetizer
This is the nighttime glow of the eruption from “Fissure 8” in the Lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea, taken at a distance of about 12 miles – from the lanai of the house where I’m staying.
Wow. Like Mordor making itself known in the night.
Thank you so much Joey Maloney, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.
One again, to submit pictures: Use the Form or Send an Email

@Mary G: I find nature beautiful, even if it can kill you.

That does indeed look like the fires of Mordor.

I’m not sure how much sleep I would get with that as my view but it is beautiful/scary.

The BBC liveblog reports that all 12 kids and their coach are out. Four rescue divers, including a doctor, will be coming out soon.

I was able to get a better view on Sunday, from about 9 miles downslope. Unfortunately my computer went toes-up Monday morning. I have to wait for the replacement to cull and edit the pics I took, but I think I got some good ones, especially as night fell.

@Joey Maloney:
That one alone is amazing!! Fires of Mordor, indeed!!
Could you hear the eruption from there? I understand they can be quite loud. Thanks for sending that in!!
Years ago we visited, and a friend took us around an amazing lava field from the previous eruption, we hiked along a cold crevasse with a 20-30 foot high pile of hardened lava a few feet to one side of the crevasse, where the wind had moved the sputtering globs of lava to one side.
There were ferns growing in the shady spots, where enough water collected to keep them from drying out in a rainless spell. It was just outside the park boundary, amazing to see. Bare black bones of the earth. To see it erupting, over the top!!
