Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Everybody saw this coming.

People are complicated. Love is not.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

The revolution will be supervised.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Good lord, the attack ads… Just when you think Republicans can’t get any more stupid.

“We in America would be wise to implement it,” Lott says. “It’s something that we should think about, America, about putting guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens — good guys — whether they be teachers, or whether they actually be talented children or highly trained preschoolers.”

Current Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) then posits that “young people trained and understand [sic] how to defend themselves” would make schools “safer.”

“A three-year-old cannot defend itself from a assault rifle by throwing a Hello Kitty pencil case at it,” Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) says, seemingly also reading from a prepared text.

Former congressman Joe Walsh (R-IL) makes an appearance, advertising that the program would be available to “specially selected children from 12 to four years old,” and would provide training in “pistols, rifles, semi-automatics, and a rudimentary knowledge of mortars.”

“In less than a month — less than a month! — a first grader can become a First Grenader,” Walsh says.

Larry Pratt, the executive director emeritus of Gun Owners of America, adds that “toddlers are pure, uncorrupted by fake news and homosexuality.”

    I just can’t…

WaPost: Former congressman Joe Walsh explains how Sacha Baron Cohen tricked him into supporting arming toddlers with guns

… Cohen is “a funny guy because he gets people to say stupid things,” Walsh told the network. “He gets people to say stupid things because he lies to them.”

Walsh was one of the many politicians and pundits whom Cohen fooled in the Showtime comedy’s premiere. The conservative talk-show host appeared in the show’s final segment called “KILL OR BE KILLED” in which Cohen — as the fake Israeli “anti-terror expert” Col. Erran Morad — offers a “solution” to America’s epidemic of school shootings.

“The NRA wants to arm the teachers. This is crazy. They should be arming the children,” Cohen as Morad says, before introducing his (fake) new program called “Kinderguardians.” The program would arm children as young as 3 and train them to use the weapons against “naughty men.” He makes it clear that 3 is the age limit, however, because “they don’t call them the terrible twos for nothing.”

…. Cohen-as-Morad then heads to Washington to find political support for his program. Several prominent members of the right wing give just that, including Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), along with Republican former Senate majority leader Trent Lott. It’s here that he encounters Walsh, who enthusiastically backs the program.

“The intensive three-week Kinderguardian course introduces specially selected children from 12 to 4 years old to pistols, rifles, semiautomatics and a rudimentary knowledge of mortars,” Walsh says directly into the camera. “In less than a month — less than a month — a first-grader can become a first grenade-er.”

“Happy shooting, kids,” he adds. It’s the last line in the show.

As Walsh explained on CNN, Cohen duped him by telling him that he was “getting an award from some Israeli TV station because I’m a great supporter of Israel.”

“After they conducted an interview, they had me read off of a teleprompter talking about some of the innovative products that Israel invented,” Walsh explained. “Then they had me read about this 4-year-old child in Israel who, when a terrorist entered his classroom, somehow he grabbed the terrorist’s gun and held the terrorist at bay. And that was an example of how Israel trains and arms preschool kids on how to use firearms, and boy shouldn’t we do that in America?”

He said as he read it, he thought, “Well, this is kind of crazy, but it is Israel and Israel is strong on defense.” Later, “we found out this whole thing was made up.” [But it seemed feasible at the time?]

Walsh said he didn’t realize until 3 a.m. the next day that he’d been “duped.”

Twofer. Baron-Cohen got one in at the Israeli crazies too.

    Kinderguardians. LOL.

The Republicans in power are almost all stupid, venal, power mad and perverted by their quest for power and money, with no intelligence nor education to guide that quest.

So I find the amusing snippets Sasha Baron Cohen has found to weave into that bit — well, actually a little painful, as it exhibits the degree to which those men are corrupted by their power mad venality. Which is bad, because they are already pretty powerful in some perverse ways.

I have a friend who lives near Helsinki and he is a native Finn. To avoid the insanity of the press and presence of Russians, he is taking a vacation out of town, joining many other Finns at this time of year.

He loathes Trump and what he has done to our country. He says that most other countries understand that Americans are not all Republican Trump followers and I tell him often that we hope to regain some ground come November. My friend was on a ferry with American Trump fans last year and he politely engaged in conversation until he finally excused himself, lest he say something about how terrible Trump is. On the return trip, he was joined by Americans who despise Trump and he said they had a much more pleasant conversation; he ended up buying them beer in sympathy.

Finland shares an uneasy border with Russia, but they have a military that is always on alert and prepared for invasion. I hope they remain safe.

    No shit.

If Trump and Putin aren’t discussing how to rig this election for Republicans, I will be surprised.

I am at the point that if Trump doesn’t return Alaska to the Russians, I will call it a success.

@gene108: I used to live about a half mile away from the guy. Never ventured over to his street, but knew he was there. Larry Pratt is quite the asshole, and has used his life to endanger our own.

@Yarrow: Maybe Dershowitz can negotiate asylum for Assange at Martha’s Vineyard.

@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et al.): Reagan made sure the hostages stayed in Iran until his inauguration. He used drugs to finance gunrunners and built the cartels.

@Yarrow: Assange should be removed from the embassy and sent directly to Azkaban.

Just got back from seeing the absolutely wonderful “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” about Fred Rogers’ life.
And the whole time thinking, my God, how far this country has fallen from his beautiful and simple message and life career.
Spoiler: toward the end FOX news makes an appearance. And, yes, it’s as bad as you think…and explains a lot about the Trump phenomenon that they can vilify Fred effin’ Rogers >:(

He still comes by occasionally, although a couple of years ago he said he was stepping away from regular commenting.

Faux News of course mentioned the anti-Trump protesters, but focused instead on:
    – an alleged pro-Trump counter-protest by RW Britons that allegedly drew “thousands”
    – criticism of the Mayor of London for his alleged incompetent handling of crime in London (psst…the Mayor is Muslim, in case ya didn’t know)…and there’s crime in London under his watch, we tell ya!

    @Yarrow:

When Assange is extradited to the US, Dershowitz can do there work here.

And when that happens, Trump’s next Presidential pardon will be um….SPOILER ALERT! OK, so maybe I should wait and not risk spoiling the suspense for you all.
