This hasn’t been a good week for Paul Erickson, also known as “US Person 1” in the court documents charging alleged Russian spy Mariia Butina. Erickson is a lifelong GOP operative who had a “personal relationship” with Butina, squiring her around DC and NRA conventions and introducing her to many Republican bigwigs. But he found out, presumably through the indictment, that Butina just wasn’t that into him. Via the BBC:
“But this relationship does not represent a strong tie to the United States because Butina appears to treat it as simply a necessary aspect of her activities,” said the court papers.
In some of her photos on social media, Ms Butina is seen with Paul Erickson, a South Dakota-based conservative political activist who is listed in public records as being 56 years old.
She had “expressed disdain for continuing to cohabitate with” the American man, according to documents seized by the FBI.
Prosecutors said she did not appear to take the attachment seriously because “on at least one occasion, Butina offered an individual other than US Person 1 sex in exchange for a position within a special interest organisation”.
The documents do not name the organisation in question. But her social media accounts show she frequented National Rifle Association (NRA) events.
So she was ready to dump Erickson for Ted Nugent or some other gross old ghoul who could help her more efficiently funnel money from the Kremlin to Republican campaign coffers via the NRA. Ouch. Earlier today, someone vandalized Erickson’s Wikipedia page:
The “traitor to the American people” bit has since been removed. But still, that had to hurt. Open thread!

@bluehill: Erickson’s got longstanding connections to Russian government officials and oligarchs/organized crime leaders (Torshin is one of the top leaders of the Russian mob). He’s also heavily connected on the GOP/movement conservative/christian conservative side. Including both the NRA and The Family/The Fellowship/C Street folks who run the national prayer breakfast, which is how Butina was able to get deep access to that stuff. He was a senior advisor to Romney’s campaign in 2012. He was a College Republican treasurer when he was in college. He’s involved with Marsha Blackburn’s campaign to replace Bob Corker in the Senate. He’s a major bridging node between the Russians and these groups, movements, and campaigns in the US. And he’s in a lot of trouble.

I think you’ll have a hard time convincing somebody to flip based on that logic. Flipping burns their bridges, and they are unlikely to be willing to do that for something that transient.
IMO, if they really have incredibly damning evidence against Trump, somebody should just release it and accept whatever consequences follow. If the evidence is actually enough to bring down Trump, that should be true even if they have to break the rules to reveal it. The whole “they have the evidence to bring Trump down but nobody is willing to release it” line just stinks of BS.

@sukabi: All Americans are automatically masked as the raw SIGINT is converted into usable format (transcripts). Unless they are subject to surveillance covered under a separate FISA warrant. It is then up to the intelligence consumer, in this case the counterintelligence task force working for Special Counsel Mueller and the other counterintelligence folks working in the DOJ’s and FBI’s National Security Division in DC to request unmasking. Which requires providing justification for doing so. Given what we know about Butina, Torshin, and Erickson, and what they were all doing and trying to do, there is ample evidence/justification for unmasking requests. It is going to be a very, very, very long list. It will include most, if not all, of the NRA board. A number of GOP elected and appointed officials and their staff members. At both the Federal and state level. A number of people affiliated with the movement conservative and conservative Christian movements, including their various funders, think tanks, institutes, lobbying firms, ministries, and broadcasters. Despite what the current charges are, basically being an unregistered agent for a foreign state (Russia), the details of the complaint make it clear that this is a major counterintelligence case dealing with significant foreign espionage and influence operations within the US.
Colleeniem
@bluehill: I think the have at least significantly penetrated the vast defense lobbying sector. There is an apparatus, Defense News, which follows defense acquisitions and military issues. They have a YouTube channel and interview defense department leadership, military and civilian. They put out a daily round up, called the Early Bird, With a list of important defense related headlines. Lots of military officers get this in their inbox. In 2016, they were definitely including some crazy articles from Sputnik, with salacious headlines about Obama and/or Clinton. The thing is, if you were working on a .mil domain, you could even open the articles.
I thought it was hinky then they would chose that source of information. I mean, the editor would obviously select helpful defense stories (or scandalous ones), and from foreign press, but to include those stories in context of the product was jarring to me.

Here’s the Washington Post editorial page once again publishing an op-ed based on factually false premises. Trumpling Michael Anton is arguing that immigrants’ children born in the US can be stripped of their citizenship if the Republican Congress can just get its act together to pass legislation annulling birthright citizenship. Anton is rehashing the same old thoroughly discredited myths about US legal history.
Except that’s false. Birthright citizenship has been American law since 1776 (see Lynch v. Clarke [1844]), and it has never mattered who a child’s parents are or even how long a child born in the US continued to live in the US. The 14th Amendment was about acknowledging that ius soli also governs the recently freed slaves, and turning settled law of birthright citizenship into a constitutional principle.
So why does WaPo continue to publish easily falsified op-eds?
