Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

I’m a broken record on this but demographic anxieties and the changing face of the nation are far more motivating to Republican voter behavior than esoteric principles about taxation and the size of government. The rise of Trump is testament to this phenomenon.

Seriously dangerous:

Breaking: white nationalists heading to Washington D.C. despite not having been electedhttps://t.co/Wp8QE96X4j

— QHatSecretMessages (@Popehat) August 9, 2018

USAToday:

The mayor and police chief of Washington, D.C., on Thursday promised tight security for Sunday’s “Unite the Right” rally and counter-protests marking the first anniversary of a white nationalist rally that erupted in deadly violence a year ago.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city was activating its emergency operations center and would be on high alert for violence.

“We have people coming to our city for the sole purpose of spewing hate,” Bowser said. “We denounce hate, we denounce anti-Semitism, and we denounce the rhetoric we expect to hear this Sunday.”

Bowser, Chief Peter Newsham and other officials spoke at a news conference held at a synagogue in the city of 700,000 people, about half of whom are black.

Newsham said guns will be banned from the rallies, even for gun owners with legal permits. He said the white nationalists and the counter-protesters would be separated, even though both have permits to use a park near the White House.

Newsham was reticent to provide security details, saying he didn’t want anyone with malicious intent to be able to “plan ahead.”

“The rules are pretty simple,” Newsham said. “Don’t hurt anyone and don’t break anything…

Hundreds of counter-protesters, banding together as Shut it Down D.C., are planning a “Still Here, Still Strong” rally at Freedom Plaza, a few blocks from Lafayette Park. Organizers are calling on all “anti-fascists and people of good conscience” to take the streets in solidarity on Sunday…

Local news WTOP has more details, as of 4:45pmEDT this afternoon:

When and where
Unite the Right 2: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Lafayette Square, according to the event’s public web page.
Counterprotests: Sunday afternoon and evening, around Freedom Plaza and Lafayette Square. (One is planned for the 900 block of 16th Street Northwest, not far from Lafayette.) A march from Freedom Plaza to Lafayette Square is also planned, which will probably impact traffic in the area.
NOTE: Informal counterprotests are possible in the area as well.

How many
It remains unclear how many protesters and counterprotesters will be on hand. The National Park Service has issued three permits — one for Kessler’s event and two for the counterprotests.

Kessler’s white nationalist group, with an estimated 100 to 400 participants, received their permit Thursday.

One counterprotesting group — the Democratic Socialists of Metro D.C. (estimated 1,000 participants) — received a permit Wednesday evening. They will assemble in Freedom Plaza and march to Lafayette Square.

Another counterprotesting group, the ANSWER Coalition, received a permit on Thursday. They anticipate around 1,500 counterprotesters at Lafayette Square, 500 at Farragut Square and 500 at McPherson Square.

A fourth permit has yet to be issued to a third counterprotesting group, which anticipates five people burning a Confederate/Nazi flag in Lafayette Park…

Kessler, who dubbed this year’s event “Unite the Right 2,” filed paperwork with the Park Service in May for a permit allowing 400 people to demonstrate in Lafayette Park, just across from the White House grounds, “to protest civil rights abuse in Charlottesville Va/white civil rights rally.”

I don’t know. “Ingraham” just doesn’t seem like a very American name. One of those foreigner names, I think. Not American like “Jones” or “Smith” or even “White.” Maybe someone ought to accost her and demand to see her credentials. Or maybe just take her in for questioning.

    Well, isn’t this special?

Officials in Franklin County said Wednesday they had found 588 previously uncounted votes in a Columbus suburb.

And it happened because of human error, insists Franklin County Board of Elections spokesman Aaron Sellers.

When election officials brought two master personal electronic ballots – or PEBs, small devices inserted into voting machines – back to the Franklin County Board of Elections from a Worthington polling location, one was uploaded into the final, unofficial total of a super-tight congressional race.

A woman that I work with is from Worthington. A quiet, reserved, retired high school teacher was spittin’ mad when I left work today.

The next day, as bipartisan members of the board of elections were reviewing the race, they realized the PEB’s results were missing.

That PEB and its 588 votes were found. The breakdown was 198 votes for Republican Troy Balderson, 388 votes for Democrat Danny O’Connor and two for Green Party candidate Joe Manchik.

    They never giv eup.

Unsurprisingly, some white people are feeling a little less “economic anxiety” under Trump. According to a recent poll noted in Politico, almost everyone in America things that race relations have gotten worse under Trump, except for white Republicans.

According to the poll, 55 percent of voters say race relations have worsened under Trump, compared with 16 percent who say they have gotten better. Another 18 percent say race relations have stayed about the same since Trump became president last year.

Just over half of white voters, 51 percent, say race relations have worsened under Trump, while larger majorities of African-American voters (79 percent) and Hispanics (60 percent) say they have gotten worse.

Self-identified Democratic voters overwhelmingly say race relations have gotten worse under Trump (82 percent), compared with only 4 percent who say they have gotten better and 9 percent who say they are about the same.

But more Republicans say race relations have gotten better under Trump (35 percent) than say they have gotten worse (25 percent). About three in 10 — 29 percent — say race relations have stayed about the same. (Independents mirror the overall electorate: 13 percent say they have gotten better, 55 percent say have gotten worse and 20 percent say they are about the same.)

Meanwhile, Fox News is clearly in step with Trump’s program and now follow his script (as dictated by Stephen Miller) in railing against legal immigrants, not just the undocumented. Any day now, they Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson will be delivering their opinion pieces with “Whites Only” signs in the background.

So, the kids of earlier immigrants are going to get angry and scared about the new immigrants.
    That is like 1854 too.

Republican Sikh man got beat up near Turlock CA (part of my ancestral area here in CA). There has been a large Sikh community in the Central Valley for well over 100 years. Pretty good chance the white kids who beat up the Sikh guy come from families who immigrated later than a lot of Sikh families who live here.

I guess it is good to let people know that the fascists are emitting hate speech. I saw polls, maybe one here, that showed vast majority of US does not like hating on immigrants Most people here have enough info and common sense to understand where they came from, and what dangerous BS this is.

@Ken: Yes, that is the makeup of Ingraham’s family. She is a single, intentional mom who adopted a daughter from Guatemala and two sons from Russia.

I learned that today while bopping around. A commentator on one thread or another wondered how Ingraham’s immigrant children might feel about their mother’s remarks.

Either Ingraham is an extremely cynical con artist or she is immune from cognitive dissonance.

Melania Trump used visa opposed by her husband to get her parents’ citizenship

President Donald Trump’s in-laws are officially United States citizens, obtaining their citizenship through the sponsorship of their adult daughter, one of the very categories of family visas that the administration has sought to end.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, the parents of first lady Melania Trump, were granted citizenship Thursday, their immigration attorney, Michael Wildes, announced.

    Thx guys.

So a bit about the program. It’s a Master of Science in Health Care Management. It’s the “traditional” track program, but it’s geared towards working professionals who want to pursue graduate studies while still being able to work. It’s an 11 course program, that adds ups to 33 course hours. You can enroll fulltime or part time (whichever is a good pace for you), as long as you complete the courses in 2 years. The majority of the classes are held in the evenings (again to make it easier for working professionals) and a couple are held as all day Saturday courses (those seem to be more seminar/lecture formats).

I am still paying off my undergraduate student loans, so my plan is to pay for school out of pocket (my employer does provide tuition reimbursement for work-related degrees). To do that, my plan is to take 2 courses a semester, and pay total tuition each semester in installments. I can handled the added financial stress, as long as I am able to budget it out…I’ve already looked at my budget and 2 classes would be just in my budget sweet spot and not feel the need to penny pench (pluse it would only be for 4 installments). I don’t need anymore loans to have to pay off…tah.

Anyway…I have to meet w/an advisor next week…then classes begin August 20!!

Oh and YES…I plan to go to London for the 7 days in September! Hopefully there will be no exams during those days, and I would only miss 1 day of classes…we’ll have to wait and see.

“I wasn’t planning on dressing up as a clown. I’d been drinking all night in Poughkeepsie and I somehow ended up at the train station, so I decided to take the 4 AM train into the city. I had $200 in my pocket from some gutter cleaning work. I immediately spent the first $60 on brunch and Bloody Marys. Then I walked by Party City and I had the idea to get a clown wig. But then I noticed the suspenders, and the top, and the bow tie, and some balloons. I bought a red nose too but I’m not sure what happened to it. I left the store with about $100, which was enough to get some shoes and a half pint of Seagram’s. I ended the day with $10, but that got lost when I passed out in Times Square. Now I’m trying to figure out how to get home. I need to stop drinking.”

The two candidates who are virtually tied with the absentee and provisional ballots outstanding are the sitting Republican governor Colyer and Kobach, who is the secretary of state. If Colyer wants Kobach recused, he will have to make the legal challenge.

It’s definitely a small world (after all)! I met his folks in Flint (yes, that Flint) when I was the classical music person for the NPR station there and J (using initials so as not to out anybody) was the classical music critic for the Flint Journal. His wife, S, was (and is) a fine pianist. J was, apart from my WFBE colleagues, the first person I met in Flint. He and S have remained good friends for all these years — mostly on FB these days. They are rightly proud of both sons, one a violinist, the other (monarchist) a cellist, both extremely accomplished. I think they find T’s obsession with kings, shahs, and emperors a bit puzzling, but it’s a harmless kind of hobby :-)

    From WaPo
A federal judge in Washington halted a deportation in progress Thursday and threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt after learning that the Trump administration started to remove a woman and her daughter while a court hearing appealing their deportations was underway.

“This is pretty outrageous,” U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan said after being told about the removal. “That someone seeking justice in U.S. court is spirited away while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her?” “I’m not happy about this at all,” the judge continued. “This is not acceptable.”
    (—)
Attorneys for the civil rights organization and Department of Justice had agreed to delay removal proceedings for Carmen and her child until 11:59 p.m. Thursday so they could argue the matter in court. But lead ACLU attorney Jennifer Chang Newell, who was participating in the court hearing via phone from her office in California, received an email during the hearing that said the mother and daughter were being deported. During a brief recess, she told her colleagues the pair had been taken from a family detention center in Dilley, Tex., to the airport in San Antonio for a morning flight.

After being informed of the situation, Sullivan granted the ACLU’s request to delay deportations for Carmen and the other plaintiffs until the lawsuit is decided, and ordered the government to “turn the plane around.”

Justice Department attorney Erez Reuveni said he had not been told the deportation was happening that morning and could not confirm the whereabouts of Carmen and her daughter. The ACLU said later that government attorneys informed them after the hearing that the pair was on a flight to El Salvador. A spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, which implements deportations, did not respond to questions about why the Carmen and her daughter were removed from the country. “We are complying with the court’s order, and upon arrival in El Salvador, the plaintiffs will not disembark and will be promptly returned to the United States,” ICE spokeswoman Justine Whelan said.

Eunice Lee, who is co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the case and co-legal director at the University of California at Hastings’s Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, said: “It must have been absolutely terrifying for them to think they would be returning to a country where they raised very credible claims of persecution and death. It’s outrageous to me that while we were working around-the-clock filing briefings for this case’s early morning hearing that people in the government were actively arranging for Carmen’s deportation.” The Justice Department declined a request for comment. …

Carmen fled El Salvador with her daughter in June, according to court records, fearing they would be killed by gang members who had demanded she pay them each month or suffer consequences. Several co-workers at the factory where Carmen worked had been murdered, and her husband is also abusive, the records state.
    (—)
In June, Sessions vacated a 2016 Board of Immigration Appeals court case that granted asylum to an abused woman from El Salvador. As part of that decision, Sessions said gang and domestic violence in most cases would no longer be grounds for receiving asylum.

“The mere fact that a country may have problems effectively policing certain crimes — such as domestic violence or gang violence — or that certain populations are more likely to be victims of crime, cannot itself establish an asylum claim,” Sessions wrote at the time.
    (—)
The lawsuit says Sessions’s ruling, and updated guidelines for asylum officers that the Department of Homeland Security issued a month later, subject migrants in expedited removal proceedings to an “unlawful screening standard” that deprives them of their rights under federal law. Asylum seekers previously had to show that the government in their native country was “unable or unwilling” to protect them. But now they have to show that the government “condones” the violence or “is completely helpless” to protect them, the lawsuit says.

If G had wanted to stay in healthcare instead of going to library school, my other suggestion for him would have been a master’s in public administration. It’s way more useful than a general MBA. One of his friends who stayed in healthcare just finished hers this year.

She’s supposed to despise herself and any other Latinos, and to be eternally grateful for being “rescued from poverty” by Ingraham. There’s probably lots of yelling about how she now “owes” Ingraham eternal fealty because Ingraham deigned to adopt her.

This is insane. Even if she loves the child, she cannot raise her to be emotionally healthy and also hate other children like her.

    @Brachiator:

Right-wingers like Ingraham don’t adopt kids from developing countries so they can love them and nurture them into healthy adults. They do it as a power trip to prove to the outside world that they’re Good People: Look at me, I was willing to adopt a brown child! I am so much more virtuous than you!

There are some major horror stories out there about what happens when Christianists like Ingraham adopt kids who are not sufficiently grateful and obedient as they grow up.
