Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

“woke” is the new caravan.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

A consequence of cucumbers

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Let’s finish the job.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

People are complicated. Love is not.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Okay, Daniel Dale (Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star) has anchored his live Twitter thread for Trump’s rally. Recommended!

Trump is scheduled to speak shortly at a campaign rally in Charleston, West Virginia. Thread starts here.
    — Daniel Dale (@ddale8) August 21, 2018

C-SPAN is carrying it live, if you want video, and Chris Matthews just said that if Trump says anything about Cohen or Manafort they’ll cut to it.

And Matthews is leading off with Omarosa!

In total synchronicity, the last of my tequila and the last of my margarita mix perfectly matched to give me one last drink to celebrate this evening. That never happens!

OT (as an FYI for any interested).

The leading edge of a vast area of very deep tropical moisture surrounding Lane will overspread the Big Island by Wednesday morning, Maui county by Wednesday night, Oahu by Thursday, and Kauai by late Thursday or Thursday night. Once this occurs, there’s the distinct possibility of intense, flooding rainfall and squalls surrounding Lane.

There is a considerable amount of uncertainty in the models as to when the deep moisture in the wake of Lane departs. At least one shows modest drying out over the weekend, while the GFS maintain high moisture over the islands into next week…which would of course be troublesome for any areas that get excessive rainfall. The combination of a deep moist unstable layer and strong low level wind shear along and to the east of the track of Lane will make tornadoes and large waterspouts a possibility in rainbands.

As far as the winds go, the onset of damaging tropical storm force winds on the Big Island could be as early as Wednesday, with dangerous hurricane force winds possible by Wednesday night. On Maui County, damaging tropical storm force winds could begin as early as Wednesday night, with dangerous hurricane force winds possible starting Thursday. Oahu could see damaging winds by Thursday morning, and Kauai by Thursday night. It’s not possible to know who might get the worst of the storm right now, so the best thing to do is to get ready.

The latest CPHC forecasts continue to show that all islands are at risk from direct effects from the center of Hurricane Lane. Everyone should take this hurricane very seriously and should prepare accordingly. It’s also important to expect that there will need to be future adjustments to the track and intensity forecast, particularly with the challenging recurvature forecast that Lane is presenting. Let me know if he brings up Pelosi. She just issued a statement slapping him right back down:

Today’s guilty verdicts against President Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and the guilty plea of Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, are further evidence of the rampant corruption and criminality at the heart of Trump’s inner circle.

Cohen’s admission of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in hush money ‘at the direction of the candidate’ to influence the 2016 election shows the president’s claims of ignorance to be far from accurate, and places him in even greater legal jeopardy.

These convictions are further proof that the special counsel’s team and prosecutors in New York are conducting thorough and professional investigations, which must be permitted to continue free from interference.

Congressional Republicans’ determination to cover up for the president and his criminal cronies betrays their oath of office and undermines their duty to the American people. House Republicans must abandon their complicity with president Trump and affirm that no one is above the law.

The Trump administration and congressional Republicans’ unprecedented culture of corruption, cronyism and incompetence is characteristic of the dysfunctional political system in Washington.

In seven years they incurred $37,761 in in bank fees for overdrafts and insufficient funds. They bought video games on the campaign credit card, then turned around and claimed that the charges were false. Appears the campaign treasurer sang like a bird, kept warning them against doing all of it and being blown off.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch (via Guardian):

The US department of justice has released a statement about the Michael Cohen conviction.

“Michael Cohen is a lawyer who, rather than setting an example of respect for the law, instead chose to break the law, repeatedly over many years and in a variety of ways. His day of reckoning serves as a reminder that we are a nation of laws, with one set of rules that applies equally to everyone,” said Robert Khyzami, attorney for the United States.

FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said: “[A]s we all know, the truth can only remain hidden for so long before the FBI brings it to light. We are all expected to follow the rule of law, and the public expects us – the FBI – to enforce the law equally. Today, Mr. Cohen has been reminded of this important lesson, as he acknowledged with his guilty plea.”

The Justice Department alleged the couple falsely described their purchases in FEC filings as “campaign travel,” “dinner with volunteers/contributors,” or by using other seemingly innocent monikers. They described the payment of their family dental bills as a charitable contribution to “Smiles For Life,” and tickets to see “Riverdance” at the San Diego Civic Theater as “San Diego Civic Center for Republican Women Federated/Fundraising.”

The indictment also alleges that Hunter spent campaign funds on social outings with another congressman, who is identified only as “Congressman A.” In March 2010, for example, the indictment alleges that Hunter spent more than $120 at Birchmere Music Hall with that congressman and two others, and the next month, Hunter claimed a $256 reimbursement for driving his car on a trip to Virginia Beach with the same group.

He also spent $238 in December 2013 while watching a San Diego Chargers game at a D.C.-area restaurant with another unnamed congressman, the indictment alleges.

And not just for himself. Another dirty GOP congressman is implicated.

The Navy could only do it one specific day, Duncan said he would discuss it with Mrs. Hunter, then came back and told his chief of staff to tell the Navy to go f*** themselves, and no tour occurred. Also, he wanted to buy Hawaiian shorts on another trip, but had no money, and she told him to buy them at the hotel pro shop and tell the campaign that they were balls for wounded warriors.

Closing Argument for the Prosecution in the Trial of Timothy McVeigh (May 29, 1997)

No. 3, that he enlisted at least one coconspirator and attempted to recruit yet another, Michael Fortier, to help him in that criminal act and that he and Terry Nichols acquired and attempted to acquire all of the necessary components to build a massive bomb; that Timothy McVeigh carefully, very deliberately selected his target, the Murrah Building, he surveyed it, and that in April of 1995, he rented the truck, built the bomb, and detonated it against the Murrah Building. That’s the Government’s case. Promises made, promises kept.

Don’t know how that happened but hopefully the prosecutor will retry him on those ten counts. I assume the jury couldn’t keep track of all the evidence.

My guess is there were some jurors who didn’t want to convict on some of the counts because:

    1) There was a question about whether Manafort had to report his foreign bank accounts if he didn’t have majority control over them
    2) They agreed he had committed bank fraud but didn’t think he did so as part of a conspiracy
    3) They didn’t think he was committing bank fraud when the bank president knew he was lying on his application but wanted to grant the loan anyway in the hopes of getting in good with Trump

None of those things seem totally unreasonable to me. I wouldn’t have agreed with the jurors who didn’t want to convict, but I can imagine somebody seeing things that way in good faith.

Here’s a question for the lawyers amongst us: with the (obvious to not-lawyers) seemingly excessive criticism of the prosecution lawyers, by the judge in the Manafort case, what happens if they are assigned the same judge for the second trial?

Can the prosecution team do anything to request another judge? Or is it automatic that they get the same “quirky” “brilliant” “eccentric” [interfering] for the second trial? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks

    ICYMI, BooMan at WaMo today:

    […]

As I’ve said many times before, if Michael Cohen went to Prague, Trump will be removed from office. Four months ago, McClatchy journalists Peter Stone and Greg Gordon reported the following:

The Justice Department special counsel has evidence that Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and confidant, Michael Cohen, secretly made a late-summer trip to Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Confirmation of the trip would lend credence to a retired British spy’s report that Cohen strategized there with a powerful Kremlin figure about Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

It would also be one of the most significant developments thus far in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of whether the Trump campaign and the Kremlin worked together to help Trump win the White House. Undercutting Trump’s repeated pronouncements that “there is no evidence of collusion,” it also could ratchet up the stakes if the president tries, as he has intimated he might for months, to order Mueller’s firing.

Donald Trump better pray that Peter Stone and Greg Gordon were catastrophically wrong in their reporting, because Cohen is going to spill the beans now on what really happened.

    […]

What’s that saying? Tick Tock? Something like that. ;-)

If that report is true, it’s clear why the Teabaggers and Donnie’s Minions have been so desperate to discredit Steele’s Dossier.

And they paid for a lot of trips for extended family members. At one point, the wife complained to the campaign treasurer that the daily limit on the campaign credit card should be higher than $1000. Oh, the coup de grace: they charged the campaign for their children’s tuition to — wait for it — a private Christian school. They also spent much dinero on “dance competitions” for a family member, likely, Irish dancing for their daughter (based on spending $1000 for many family members to attend a RiverDance performance. The whole indictment is like that, page after page of individual charges to the campaign.

I can’t imagine there is much compassion left from judges against Trump and the national GOP.

There’s a lot from the judges he recently appointed, surely. He’s been packing the judiciary with allies with great speed–it’s the one thing Trump seems serious about doing.

I don’t know anything about how that district does things, but my husband was on the ND of California grand jury recently and they all received a 1/2 day orientation by someone trained to do that job before their actual service began answering questions about payment, parking, bathroom breaks, notes, order of evidence at trial, etc. Very thorough. My state court experience on several juries in the SF Bay Area is that it all depends on the judge. Some give patient, thorough explanations of things, others never even address except to order them to do something. No wonder that jury outcomes are so unpredictable.

Of course he was making the payments with, wait for it, campaign donations, so he didn’t give a shit about the money, the bank was charging him a bundle and he was glad to pay them so they didn’t care.

    @Ruckus: Are you kidding?

That is how consumer banks make their money. Hell, several of the large ones: B of A, Wells Fargo, Citi, all process the day’s check’s and debits from largest and smallest. That way, if you write $1,000 in checks consisting of one check for $900 and a dozen for five or ten bucks but only have $899 dollars in your account, every single check after the first one will trigger an overdraft charge.

This makes, literally, hundreds of millions of dollars for the big banks every single year.

Hell I’d bet he has a card in his wallet that says, One for all and all for me. Of course he’s going to endorse shitgibbon, he’s just like him, with perhaps a $1.95 less to his name.

Of course you couldn’t pay me enough to work for a shithead like duncan.

    @A Ghost To Most:

    @Platonailedit:
Eight guilty verdicts across all the crime classes. The others can be retried if needed. This is a WIN!

It’s actually better for credibility of the trial result that the jury did convict on eight counts while not convicting on ten of the counts – because that makes it very hard for Manafort or Trump to credibly claim Manafort did not get a fair jury or that they didn’t carefully examine the evidence or that they somehow got bamboozled by the prosecutors. Likewise, it’s better in retrospect that Judge Ellis came across as harder on the prosecutor team than the defense team.

Notice that the main thrust of GOP / Fox commentators tonight re: Manafort is that this case has nothing to do with Russia, and not that Manafort is an innocent man who’s been railroaded by a kangaroo court. In short, the thrust is to distance Trump from Manafort, not to distance Manafort from wrongdoing.

I offered one: “My Attorney Got Alotatime.” Yeah, I know; but considering most MAGAts’ literacy is in question to begin with . . .

And Duncan Hunter has been indicted, with the Zombie-Eyed Granny Starver removing him from his committee posts. Gee, you’d think the guy was on campaign or something. ::evil grin::
