Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The lights are all blinking red.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

This is the first time Trump has used the word “Africa” on Twitter as president – to express support for white people, on the recommendation of white nationalists’ Fox host. pic.twitter.com/wFiZPVu7Go

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) August 23, 2018

You know the Fox News Repub puke-funnel operators are pretty desperate when they’re reduced to scavenging white-nationalist-prepper lists for gruesome fantasies of stalwart Afrikaner farmers threatened by the violent minions of corrupt black nationalist bureaucrats. Hey, it worked for St. Ronnie, back in the golden days!… and besides, it’s not like they have to worry about crossing Paul Manafort any longer.

Get the story behind the president’s tweet about “white farmers.” The @washingtonpost has you covered. https://t.co/uj6iXLVax7

— Robert Costa (@costareports) August 23, 2018

Of course, it’s a bit of an embarrassment to the remaining “sane GOP members”, as they flee for the exits…

behold everyone, the bravest republican. https://t.co/vdd8K7XVBH

— zeddy (@Zeddary) August 23, 2018

yeah I don't think the medium was the issue here https://t.co/n0huD5037D

— Blake Hounshell (powered by blockchain) (@blakehounshell) August 23, 2018

OK. As an Afrikaner South African: This issue is blown up by the alt-right and dark-web that after Charlottesville and Dylann Roof gained some sort of false legitimacy: “This was the province of Stormfront five, 10 years ago, white genocide in SA.” https://t.co/JNh6bH83f5 (1) https://t.co/Sq2HknKje8

— lomikriel (@lomikriel) August 23, 2018

"the pipeline that Trump and his allies have built between hate groups and the mainstream isn’t accidental, unwitting, or merely the product of being repeatedly taken in by grifters.” https://t.co/FDKVfYgzY8

— Elise Foley (@elisefoley) August 23, 2018

I know many folks in the Africa bureau at State. They are smart, dedicated, capable career civil servants who will respond to requests with factual information showing that there have been no land expropriations, that violence against white farmers is at a 20-year low, etc.

— Laura Seay (@texasinafrica) August 23, 2018

And what a nightmare for our diplomats @USEmbassySA, who must now explain why our racist president’s reckless tweets about vicious falsehoods are causing currency fluctuations & bad press for the South African government.

— Laura Seay (@texasinafrica) August 23, 2018

Congrats to every idiot producer and host on every other mainstream news media network or opinion editor who will now feel the need to book people willing to defend the legitimacy of this white nationalist narrative to US audiences with no frame of reference to evaluate it.

— Dan Trombly (@stcolumbia) August 23, 2018

You know who believed the nonsense about a "White Genocide" in South Africa?

Anders Breivik, the lunatic white supremacist terrorist that killed 77 people in Norway in 2011.

Trump furthered this conspiratorial nonsense to millions of people.

— (((YousefMunayyer))) (@YousefMunayyer) August 24, 2018

For those saying Trump's noxious lies about South Africa's white farmers are a deflection from criminal investigations-

The two aren't so separate

White supremacy thrives on corruption, secrecy & theft. White supremacy is the original white collar crime — on a global scale.

I don’t really follow late-night TV (generally catch up the next day), but I do hope South African Trevor Noah is not on vacation* this week.

*Unlike Stephen Colbert, who must be ripping his hair out by the fistful that he’s not around this week to monologue about all the breaking news every goddamn day.

(OTOH, Colbert and his writers must be salivating at the prospect of summarising this week and next into one incisive comedy routine.)

If the corporate media brings on BS bigot talkers for balance on this issue, then they are bankrupt. They need to say, and show easily obtainable evidence, that Trump’s tweets about SA are a pack of total bald-face lies.

No expropriation, no agreement about land reform and compensation, no targeting of white farmers.
If people see the media weaseling and balancing on this, need to contact them and make strong complaints.
it is just totally false Stormfront, KKK, and white supremacist Big Lies, stove piped to Trump.

Ed Kilgore had an article in NY Mag yesterday about Duncan Hunter’s opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar. There is one thing that will cause this to be a brutal election:

But there was another obstacle he had to overcome before arriving at his current supreme opportunity. In February the Israeli newspaper Haaretz disclosed that Campa-Naijar’s paternal grandfather was one of the perpetrators of the infamous Black September massacre of Israeli atheletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Haaretz gave Campa-Naijjar the opportunity to make his own position on his family legacy clear:

Campa-Najjar doesn’t defend the actions of his grandfather, calling them “horrific. Innocent civilians were murdered. There is never justification for killing innocent civilians.” His thinking is also different from that of his father, whom, according to a 1996 Washington Post article, was proud of Yusuf al-Najjar and refused “to accept that killing athletes was more repugnant than the violence of Israeli occupation over the years.”

According to Campa-Najjar, “I’m against ‘comparisonism’ — competing who suffered more. Too many people have been killed. What my grandfather did was inexcusable. The goal is for our generation to be better than our predecessors, and find a way to end this conflict.”

Twitler and the whole cast of ooga-booga “Muslims trying to kill us all” will be all over it.

    @Mary G: Oops, they’re already at it:

This headline/photo by @FoxNews is reprehensible. @ACampaNajjar has worked for Pres Obama, the Commerce and Labor departments. If they criticized his politics, I’d understand. But to blame him for his dead grandfathers actions (17 years before Ammar was even born) is disgusting. pic.twitter.com/DIH3LsE0Ft— Yashar Ali ? (@yashar) August 24, 2018

IIRC, most of the Black September terrorists were Palestinian Christians, not Muslims. And one of the ringleaders was half-Jewish. At the time, it was about ethnic conflict, not religious war.

@Mary G: Teen Vogue had an article on Campa-Naijjar in May 2017. He looks like one of The Property Brothers. How could that hurt!

And his grandparents were killed by Mossad before he was even born. Sins of the grandfathers.

    Teen Vogue:

“I’m running for the people of my district. These thousands of young people who have reached out to me and said, ‘we are really inspired by what you’re trying to do. We love your message. We think you could actually make this work,” Ammar said. “Maybe a lot of that was born out of a backlash against Trump, but really it was peoples’ enthusiasm. It was this positive momentum.”

Ammar is one of those young people. He said that he became interested in politics at an early age, and he never thought his age would hold him back. Now, as he makes a bid for Congress, Ammar wants other young people to know they shouldn’t let their birth date be a barrier.

“I have a campaign called 18 by 2018, which focuses on teens who are 16,17 and going to be 18 by election day. It’s a voting block that is sorely overlooked,” he said. “Every 30 seconds a Latino American becomes 18 years old and an eligible voter. They’re the ones who are getting soul crushing debt, the worse calamaties of climate change. That’s something I really believe in. I was animated at a really young age to fight for these things. I’m a firm believer you can never start too soon.”

    18 by 2018. And that was pre-Parkland.

Racist president pees his pants with pointless concern over white farmers in South Africa, apparently now part of the United States.

And somewhere there are some white fools musing, “Well we can’t be sure he’s a racist unless we can hear him saying the N word.”

ETA. Trump has squared the lunacy of the conspiracy circle. He listens to Fox News propaganda and then Tweets about it and transforms fake news into fool’s gold which his supporters then accept as gospel.
