Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

The cats want equal time.

Sigh…remember when Scout  was that little? She’s 9 1/2 months old now and close to 100 lbs. You can see her & Bixby’s most current photos here.

Today is National Topless Day as well — but sorry, no pics.

Also, thank you to those who’ve been asking about my recovery (from genital reassignment surgery).

Things are going OK. It’s a tough recovery (my surgeon in Thailand uses a much more advanced method than used in the States and is very upfront that the recovery is twice as long and twice as hard).

Nerve re-awaking isn’t fun, and I’m not getting enough sleep because the painkillers don’t last through the night.

Scar contacture is definitely kicking in, and the only way to counteract is to actually dilate more. So upped dilation to 4x/day, which takes up 5+ hours daily.

Fortunately months 2 and 3 post-op are the worst and then it should get better. In the meantime I’m just embracing the suck.

FYI, for those who want to know more, my nym links to my blog, where I’ve been chronicaling my gender transition for the past couple years.

So the big news in our neck of the woods is that we are going to adopt another pup. We lost our big boy last December and it has been a hard road deciding when the time was right to adopt a partner for our GR/Chow Minnie. We wanted a dog approximately the same age and size. Last week we went to a rescue shelter in West LA and found him. His name is Baloo and he is a Shepherd mix. We are waiting till next Saturday to pick him up. That’s because he was already adopted out once and returned because of “anxiety issues”. Basically the adoptive couple brought him home, but left him in the back yard all day while they were at work. I was out of town last week for several days, and I’ll be gone all this week as well. So we decided to wait until I will be home and able to spend maximum time with Baloo for the first couple weeks. If anyone has experience with separation anxiety issues with new dogs, I’ll be happy for the advice.

Thanks! I feel like a giant weenie for complaining about one little ligament being replaced when you went for the full remodel, but I yam what I yam.

One piece of surgery recovery advice I saw that you might be able to use is to set alarms for when you need to take your next dose of pain medication, even if it means waking yourself up in the middle of the night. Since you’re already being woken up by the pain anyway, it’s better to wake yourself up to keep ahead of the pain than try to play catch-up later.

I ruptured a quad tendon a few years ago and had to have it repaired and that wasn’t fun either, and actually the recovery was far more painful. (They couldn’t do arthroscopic, so I’ve got since long scar as a souvenir.)

Thanks for the suggestion, makes sense. Will have to try it tonight.

It was a terrible day yesterday. Spouse and I saw a family’s world come apart. We’d just been to a memorial service along with another couple. She was only 52. Her mother’s death led to a downward spiral of depression and self medication with alcohol. Walked away from work, her husband and preteen children and died a skid row death of liver failure in a few short years. At the conclusion of the service, the officiant bade us all respect the relationships in our lives by spending time with friends and family and growing the social web of friends be cause we don’t know how much time any of us have.
Less than five minutes later, while stopped at a red light on the expressway, a small sedan blew the red light and broadsided an extended cab pickup truck. An explosion of glass, the trucked flipped end over end and landed on its roof. The sedan spun several complete relations and ended at the curb in the opposite direction if his travel.
It all happened directly in front of us.
We u-turned and jumped out to render aid. Three ran to the truck, now around the corner on a yard. I ran to the sedan. The driver stumbled out of a car so torn apart only the back seat looked undamaged. He was staggering and i led him to a bus stop bench. He was in shock. He was apologizing and trying to explain that he thought he had the yellow light, that he was driving home frim work and he was so sorry for causing the crash. As people poured out from every home and car, a couple of guys were shouting to not let him run, he’d hit and run. He tild them the same thing and apologized repeatedly. I asked if he knew his parent’s phone number and he said he didnt, mentioning he had a phone in the car. Our friend retrieved it and i asked if his parents spoke English so that i could tell them what happened and where he was.
He said no, they only spoke Spanish.
The driver of the pickup was able to crawl out the hole where the back window had been and was up and talking as the fire/emt pulled up.
The driver I stayed with had lacerations to his torso and his sweat was pink. He kept talking and the story he told was this:
He was driving home from work and was tired. He clipped another car, and ran when he then blew the red light that he thought would be yellow long enough to get through. He didn’t stop at the prior accident because he didn’t have a DL. The guys that had accused him of trying to run when he staggered from the car were the guys who’s car he just hit, and even they were telling him that the most important thing was that nobody died, and that things would be okay, and to stop talking because he was making statements against his interest. The emt’s made their way over to him and we left as the police were arriving.
He wasn’t more than 20 or 21. His lunch bag was on the backseat and his clothes were those of a laborer. He was tired, and in shock and was aware that his life is as fucked as could possibly be. I could not wring the adrenalin out of my system, and my heart and neck hurt so bad.
Spouse and I spent the rest of the day and night talking it out and we believe that in addition to almost killing another driver, and totally destroying two vehicles and damaging the first car he hit, he is going to jail, and his family will have lost his income and will likely face deportation. He drove without a license and likely because of his immigration status.
It was as heavy a heavy-hearted day as could be.

@laura: I’m so sorry – what a terrible day. Glad you and your spouse could talk about it, and hope that helps reduce the mental aftereffects of the accident trauma. I hope the memorial service helped the day’s first family move past their trauma. The accident is a perfect example of why lots of cities keep their police from cooperating with ICE. Maybe if there hadn’t been such a fear of complete disaster following the fender-bender the kid was in, he might not have run and then caused the much worse accident. Terror can make people do astonishingly stupid things. Good for you guys for helping the injured in the aftermath, so thanks for that.

Thanks all of you. It was and remains just ‘all bad.’ It should be said that restricting drivers licenses is as dumb as can be and if memory serves, came with the Pete Wilson administration. Undocumented immigrant Arnold Schwarzenegger had a DL, as did every other expat, immigrant, temporary worker etc., because it was legal and a nonissue and kept drivers insured. So, the only reason to deny a license when your state is a car-centric one is because your need to control and marginalize and instill fear us how you get your unpopular policies passed.
