Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

We still have time to mess this up!

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

There’s just no escaping the motherfucker. There is never a day when his fucking name isn’t splashed all over the goddamned headlines. It’s always fucking something. I feel like I am fucking drowning in his sea of narcissism. You can’t go anywhere without seeing his fucking name or something he did. I just hate the man more than I have ever hated anyone and anything and I have 48 years of hating shit under my belt.

I want Obama back.

Remember when we could go for days without any mention of Obama in the news? He was just quietly doing his presidenting.

Going out to canvass tomorrow morning. Lots of folks not home, but once in a while you run into someone who says “democrats all the way down, and my wife too!” That always makes me happy.

There wasn’t much point because these people cannot be reasoned with. Trump could skullfuck Honey Boo Boo on Fox News and they’d still love the guy. My focus has been on CA and it’s paying off.

We should have a pretty damn strong net neutrality bill going to the governor, as well as a bill to mandate that public universities provide emergency contraceptives and medical abortion pills to students on demand. We just sent a bill to end cash bail, which while not perfect it a step in the right direction. Bill to move to 100% renewable power by 2045. A bill to require that public corporations have at least one women on their board of directors by 2019. Dems are getting their shit together in my district which is even money to go democratic for the first time since I moved here. I’m a registered non-partisan, and I’m getting weekly calls from canvassers for the Dem. None from the GOP. It tells you who is working for this and who isn’t.

As I noted in an earlier thread, Trump is finishing the week hating Canada. How do you hate Canada? It’s like hating puppies.

President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed “insulting” comments that he’d first made off the record regarding his unwillingness to work with Canada on the North American Free Trade Agreement.

During an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday, Trump said he was not willing to compromise with Canada on revising NAFTA. He put those remarks “off the record,” but they were quickly leaked to the Toronto Star.

“Here’s the problem. If I say no ― the answer’s no,” Trump said about a possible compromise. “If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal. … I can’t kill these people.”

Any potential trade deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms,” he said, and expressed his pleasure with his current strategy of repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs, according to the Star.

I think Trump is insanely jealous of the youthful Trudeau.

But yeah, I could do with a week of Trump not being infantile or unbalanced.

ETA. Also, Trump is stumped when asked if he thinks McCain would have made a better president than Obama. Stupid question, but I love that it makes Trump uncomfortable.

Some will, but some will drift away as scandal after scandal erodes his standing. Look at that ABC/WaPo poll being circulated today; his approval among Republicans was down to 78%. Still way higher than it should be, but he used to be at 90% or so among Republicans. Look at the chart at the top of page 4 to see how he’s bled support across all demographics.

He’s at new lows among college-educated Americans (albeit just by a point; 29 percent approve), moderates (24 percent) and blacks (3 percent, with a nearly unanimous 93 percent disapproving).
The single biggest shift is among college-educated white women – just 23 percent now approve of Trump, down 17 points from the peak in April 2017, with disapproval up 20 points, from 55 percent then to 75 percent now. Still, even among non-college white men, a core Trump group, his approval is down 15 points, from 70 percent just this spring to 55 percent today.

@dmsilev: The fivethirtyeight blog poll aggregate is taking an interesting and good turn downward for Trump too.
    https://fivethirtyeight.com/

It’s hard to say when the average voting person who is not a politics and policy junky will tune in and start some serious thinking about what to do. Most of them don’t vote in primaries, so why even pay attention until some news actor talks about how they are all finished and you can concentrate on the election you plan to vote in?

But, I think the public attention turns serous in mid to late August. Will be interesting to see what happens as people really focus on voting. Both on shifts in voter sentiment, and probably most important, who will decide to turn out to vote.

I don’t think the news media has the guts to lay this out, because it would implicate the rest of GOP as co-conspirators, by their refusal to investigate it, at the least, and that will kill the both sides do it narrative they love so much.

The one positive thing in my mind is this: There is now no possibility that calls for bipartisanship will be taken seriously. Now that the dirty swine have made it abundantly clear that they will kill us all if given the power to do so, anyone on the Left who seriously talks about bipartisanship with the GOP should be laughed off the stage. IMO, one of the great tragedies of the Obama administration is that it took him far too long to realize that the Republicans could never be anything but enemies. Sometimes, I think he still doesn’t realize it. As far as I’m concerned, the next time the Democrats hold the White House and both houses of Congress, we should work to fucking starve the red states (while providing financial support for decent people trapped in red states who want to leave).

Appreciate that. And what I tend to contemplate these days is Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, and most especially where he challenged white Americans, in one sentence, to step up and accept responsibility. For me personally, Donald Trump happened because a significant portion of my white brothers and sisters could not deal with a successful black president. It is just our continued failure (I mean my particular group – white folks) to change:

“Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh.” If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”

The Manafort and Cohen guilty verdicts and pleas took a toll. He keeps saying it is a witch hunt but they keep turning up witches. The unsurprising news that North Korea is acting true to form and the realization that he didn’t reach a great agreement. The UK visit where it was very apparent he was not welcome at our closest ally. Helsinki. And now being so petty and small (i.e. his normal self) over McCain’s funeral.
But I really think the only way to lose the deplorables would be to find out he is broke and not the great genius businessman he claims to be.

Gutless Witch DeVos leaving it to states whether to use federal money to buy guns for schools

Betsy DeVos said Friday it is up to states whether to spend federal money to buy firearms as officials struggle to find ways to prevent school shootings.

That means, for the first time, federal education dollars could be used to buy guns.

“Let me be clear: I have no intention of taking any action concerning the purchase of firearms or firearms training for school staff” under federal education law, DeVos said in a letter to Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-Va.).

DeVos said Congress should determine whether the money can be spent on firearms.

“I will not legislate via fiat from the Department,” she wrote.

Officials in Texas and Oklahoma have asked the department to clarify whether money from an educational grant program can be used to buy firearms or provide gun training in an effort to make schools safer. But no explicit clarification is planned, department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill said.

I didn’t think I’d be able to bear this at all, never for this long; but lately I’m as optimistic as I can be despite depression. Because I’m thinking: on the scale of how long it takes a country to expose/eject criminals, racists and infestations that were aided by oligarchs and dictators, we’re progressing *relatively* quickly. To get rid of such corrupt immoral people, three years would be a success. If taking longer could bring the exposure and ejection of Pence, it will be worth it. (And why not–he’s Manafort’s guy right? Do we know of a single Manafort associate who is clean?)

With today’s Patten charges, I have to wonder which Senators (on the Foreign Affairs Com! ) and Reps did Patten’s secretive company ask to take meetings with the Russia-backed Ukranians, and for what were they offered? Why wouldn’t they report such an overture? Are any of them running for reelection–is that why this came down today?

Fourth, giving people the option to move just so you won’t fuck them is, well it’s shit.

Red Staters explicitly and proudly and vocally fucked with my large Blue state (NY), passing legislation to tax state and local taxes, to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy (first order approximation). A new F-ing Tax-Tax, passed by Republicans and signed by a Republican! (A few thousand dollars for me. Some of the professionals I know, majority Republicans, will be hit a lot harder. It hits mostly upper middle class people, sure. They’re also F-ing with the ACA, which is working fine in NY. NY was already also one of those (mostly blue) states that gets back a (less than 1) fraction of taxes sent to the Federal government and the 10K SALT cap [0] will worsen that.
Now personally, I don’t much mind distribution, on a bipartisan nationwide basis, from rich states to poor. However, when the poor states proudly boast of taking even more money from the rich states, but take this extra money and give it to the rich rather than redistribute to the poor, there’s an irreconcilable difference in policy views. IMO.

If Trump is no longer President after late Jan 2019, Pence can serve the remaining <24 months without it counting as a term – I think this has been the plan to some all along. Pence is a true believer in his twisted, hateful version of Jeebus, but he'd be hamstrung by his stupidity & arrogance and hopefully pushback by a Democratic House.
