Spent the entire morning in the big city having my computer fixed- apparently the SSD boot drive failed, and a secondary storage drive went tits up, too, so I have a new boot drive and fresh install of Windows 10, so that set me back 400 bucks (after labor) and about ten hours of downloading all this shit I had on the old computer. Better than the worst case scenario which would have been the motherboard and processor, but still a kick in the dick.
WVU game at 3:30, and obviously I will be rooting for them. Any big games you all are following?

Dunno, John – I’d rather lose the computing components, which are merely commodity, than the hard disk where all of my personal files, information, writing, two decades of audio and pictures, all of my transferred CDs (I digitized in 2004), all of my work in progress, etc, resides.
Then again I build my own PCs.

So much flutter yesterday among so any pundits that something BIG was going to come down from Mueller. If it did,I missed it. Was the expectation from the idea that Mueller wouldnt release anything 60 days before the election and Friday was the deadline?

My laptop went tango uniform as well a while back and I’ve made the grave error of buying a Lenova with a halo keyboard . Cool as shit looking but not practical for a touch typist.

I would say I’m held hostage by the ND-Mich game rather than I’m following it.

I might have asked Mr. Suzanne to roleplay as Beto O’Rourke in his punk days this evening. MIGHT.
God, Beto is HOT.
The idea of him beating Ted Cruz is unbelievably arousing.

This is why I overdo my backup strategy and have three independent copies of my HD. #1, A ‘system’ backup (Time Machine for macOS)– #2, a complete bootable copy of my HD– #3, a ‘cloud’ backup (backblaze, fyi). I’ll allow that more than three would be overdoing it, although it’s tempting. #2 has turned out to be the most useful.

Duke’s brain trauma team played and won last night.
Volleyball today. Men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey tomorrow.

@MattF: One backup is no backup. Two backups is a good start towards a real backup strategy. Offsite backups are much better than local backups, out of state is better than next door’s garage.
Keeping backups up-to-date is another part of the process (I’ve just finished a pass of copying my live disc to local backup set #2, offsite backup set #2 is coming home next week for an update, local backup set #3 is next in a few days time). Hardware is fungible, bits are forever.

Reminds me of when I transferred all my CDs, about 400 of them, to my hard drive in 2005. Traded the CDs in for cash at a used record exchange place. I delayed getting a back-up drive because i wasn’t sure which one I wanted. Guess what happened next.

Looking forward to Washington vs. Auburn, oddly in Atlanta. Mush Huskies, mush!*

@Suzanne: You are so not alone in thinking that. The debates are going to be Kennedy-Nixon like in their highlighting Beto’s charisma and charm. That and Beto is shutting up and LISTENING.
Plus I have a bit of a sk8r boy fetish. :P

@Robert Sneddon:
Have had two NASs fail, assuring much flopsweat.
Now when importing photos via Lightroom I create a duplicate set and the main and duplicate sets are backed up on the (shiny and new) NAS. That’s all I have energy for. Once I stop following my kid’s soccer teams around I’ll have time to deal with the vast collection; until then it’s all about “good enough.”

I had high hopes for UW/Auburn, as, IIRC, the PAC12 blew bigtime last year nationally; a game for some respect.
Damn, early results are … unpleasant.

Who cares about sports. I want answers to life’s three big questions.
1. Is there such a thing as an honest Republican?
2. Is there life elsewhere in the universe?
3. And what the hell is going on inside the brain of my cat?
I know the answer to #1 — No.
Time is running out for me to learn the answer to #2.
But, #3 is just plain hopeless. Sigh. Hopeless. No hope at all. None.

Would like to watch the WVU TN game, but the local CBS station’s signal dropped the load some time back, and they’re too cheap to replace whatever died in the transmitter setup. So now I’m getting 15% signal level when I need better than 50% to start.
Maybe I can stream it?
No, of course not, they assume no one should be able to stream their TV who doesn’t have Dish, or Charter, or some other broadcast/broadband replacement. If I had Dish, I would be watching Dish, not hoping to stream on a weak internet connection. Fuck CBS!

Pretty frustrating, knowing essentially every damn sports event on the globe is broadcast, we have these devices that give us access to every sporting event and yet can’t actually do that. Fvcking US Open went to bar-closing time last night and we got the last sliver of the US Women’s Soccer Team only after them men’s winner finished signing tennis balls and sending them into the largely empty stands. Not that I’m bitter.
Brachiator
@TriassicSands: Your three questions
1. Sadly, no
2. Some kind of life? Unquestionably.
3. Cats have brains? ;)

Never quite understood the necessity of backups. We’ve got through about 5 computers and 7 hard drives in the past 15 or so years I can’t say I really “miss” anything. The persistence of places like Facebook that keep everything forever-I make them be my archive. Of course I don’t do any real “work” on my computers and phone, so there’s that.
In keeping with the other theme of this thread: Sports Go Sports by Garfunkel and Oates
Suzanne
@Brachiator: Oh, I do. I most certainly do.
Mmmm. BETO.
I mean, aside from the fact that he seems authentic and awesome and cool, being hot is just a bonus. And then there’s the potentially-sending-Ted-Cruz-home aspect. Oi.

@TriassicSands: #3: “I think I’ll ask to go out, then stand in the door, letting all his air conditioning out. And he’ll probably change my litter box today. Can’t wait to poop in the new, virgin, untouched litter.”
As a bonus, here’s what your dog is thinking: “I want him to feed me. It’s about time for him to feed me. Why hasn’t he fed me yet? I’ll do something cute, then he’ll feed me…”

@J R in WV:
Ooh, ooh, I googled live stream WVU football, and now I’m watching the game via my shaky internet connection. 10-zip WVU in the first quarter, TN just punted to WVU now on their own 39. So WVU might be for real this year. And now WVU punts, partly blocked by TN, but still rolls to the TN 23…

@NotMax: For very critical data, the cloud and a far geographically distant location should be considered.
An accounting client had tax data backed up at his office and a copy at home. Then the rains came, and heavy flooding. All local copies of his data were destroyed. But he also used a cloud backup service and was soon back in business, after replacing computers, etc.

I used to be obsessive about manual backups.
Now I just keep all my personal files in my Dropbox account which is mirrored on all 3 of the PCs I have at home and also accessible on my phone and iPad. And I keep all of my work files in a google drive account that is mirrored on 2 computers at home and two at work.
But then I don’t have big collections of music or video.

Feed me, Seymour is in there but there is much, much more, but it is arranged in a way incomprehensible to humans. I recently read an interesting book called “Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?” My conclusion: some people are, for some animals. For cats? No one.

You must never get a cat. You might not survive.

@Brachiator: The hotness factor of the Beto and band photo doesn’t make it for me, because I keep thinking of this album cover (although that increases the hipness factor).

The cat where I’m staying right now is fascinating; he’s mostly indoor, but goes out in the evening to do whatever he does (he’s fixed, but a helluva hunter; even with a bell around his neck, he’s very good). Doesn’t matter the season, he always comes in at 10pm, almost straight up; you could set your watch by him and do well. I’ve been looking for a visual trigger (a light, a door closing, something) and I can’t find it.
I’m working on the lyrics for Courtship the Killer but not they ain’t coming (Montezuma laying on the shore is low hanging as they say).

Just got home from canvassing here in Northern VA (and some errands.) Had a pretty good day; I recruited new two volunteers! And they’re in my neighborhood, so with luck I’ll have them to help out on Election Day. (I’ve been slowly losing my neighborhood volunteers to retirement or infirmity, so younger ones are especially valuable.)
Weirdest encounter of the day: a guy named Hussein who said he wouldn’t be voting Democratic. On further inquiry, he said he always voted Dem, but 2016 changed his mind, and now more of an independent. Wha?

That’s… kinda odd, but sweet. Football games don’t often start with a silent display of honor on both sides. Kudos to Texas for declining the penalty. The kid is still dead, but at least he got a moment of silence and both teams respecting his memory.
Football coaches need some way of being forced to look out for their players, instead of their win-loss record and the alumni pressure to win all the time. Maybe they could just NOT be assholes?

Dude, WVU beat an SEC team!!! Now, I’ll admit it wasn’t Alabama, it was Tennessee, but still, they are an SEC team and it was the opening game of the season, and they beat them 40-14, so Ya-Hoo!!! Pretty good!
Hope it isn’t the best college football news I have all season!!!
I’m not even an Alum of WVU, I went to Marshall, also a National Champion College Football team… but they aren’t going to beat an SEC team anytime soon, and everyone else in my family went to WVU but for a cousin that also lived near MU like me. Everyone who was born or lived in WV is allowed to be a WVU fan!
