Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Usually wrong but never in doubt

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

No one could have predicted…

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

The willow is too close to the house.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

This really is a full service blog.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Spent the entire morning in the big city having my computer fixed- apparently the SSD boot drive failed, and a secondary storage drive went tits up, too, so I have a new boot drive and fresh install of Windows 10, so that set me back 400 bucks (after labor) and about ten hours of downloading all this shit I had on the old computer. Better than the worst case scenario which would have been the motherboard and processor, but still a kick in the dick.

WVU game at 3:30, and obviously I will be rooting for them. Any big games you all are following?

Dunno, John – I’d rather lose the computing components, which are merely commodity, than the hard disk where all of my personal files, information, writing, two decades of audio and pictures, all of my transferred CDs (I digitized in 2004), all of my work in progress, etc, resides.

Then again I build my own PCs.

So much flutter yesterday among so any pundits that something BIG was going to come down from Mueller. If it did,I missed it. Was the expectation from the idea that Mueller wouldnt release anything 60 days before the election and Friday was the deadline?

    God, Beto is HOT.

The idea of him beating Ted Cruz is unbelievably arousing.

This is why I overdo my backup strategy and have three independent copies of my HD. #1, A ‘system’ backup (Time Machine for macOS)– #2, a complete bootable copy of my HD– #3, a ‘cloud’ backup (backblaze, fyi). I’ll allow that more than three would be overdoing it, although it’s tempting. #2 has turned out to be the most useful.

@MattF: One backup is no backup. Two backups is a good start towards a real backup strategy. Offsite backups are much better than local backups, out of state is better than next door’s garage.

Keeping backups up-to-date is another part of the process (I’ve just finished a pass of copying my live disc to local backup set #2, offsite backup set #2 is coming home next week for an update, local backup set #3 is next in a few days time). Hardware is fungible, bits are forever.

Reminds me of when I transferred all my CDs, about 400 of them, to my hard drive in 2005. Traded the CDs in for cash at a used record exchange place. I delayed getting a back-up drive because i wasn’t sure which one I wanted. Guess what happened next.

    1. Is there such a thing as an honest Republican?
    2. Is there life elsewhere in the universe?
    3. And what the hell is going on inside the brain of my cat?

I know the answer to #1 — No.
Time is running out for me to learn the answer to #2.
But, #3 is just plain hopeless. Sigh. Hopeless. No hope at all. None.

Would like to watch the WVU TN game, but the local CBS station’s signal dropped the load some time back, and they’re too cheap to replace whatever died in the transmitter setup. So now I’m getting 15% signal level when I need better than 50% to start.

    Maybe I can stream it?

No, of course not, they assume no one should be able to stream their TV who doesn’t have Dish, or Charter, or some other broadcast/broadband replacement. If I had Dish, I would be watching Dish, not hoping to stream on a weak internet connection. Fuck CBS!

Pretty frustrating, knowing essentially every damn sports event on the globe is broadcast, we have these devices that give us access to every sporting event and yet can’t actually do that. Fvcking US Open went to bar-closing time last night and we got the last sliver of the US Women’s Soccer Team only after them men’s winner finished signing tennis balls and sending them into the largely empty stands. Not that I’m bitter.

Never quite understood the necessity of backups. We’ve got through about 5 computers and 7 hard drives in the past 15 or so years I can’t say I really “miss” anything. The persistence of places like Facebook that keep everything forever-I make them be my archive. Of course I don’t do any real “work” on my computers and phone, so there’s that.

@NotMax: For very critical data, the cloud and a far geographically distant location should be considered.

An accounting client had tax data backed up at his office and a copy at home. Then the rains came, and heavy flooding. All local copies of his data were destroyed. But he also used a cloud backup service and was soon back in business, after replacing computers, etc.

Now I just keep all my personal files in my Dropbox account which is mirrored on all 3 of the PCs I have at home and also accessible on my phone and iPad. And I keep all of my work files in a google drive account that is mirrored on 2 computers at home and two at work.

The cat where I’m staying right now is fascinating; he’s mostly indoor, but goes out in the evening to do whatever he does (he’s fixed, but a helluva hunter; even with a bell around his neck, he’s very good). Doesn’t matter the season, he always comes in at 10pm, almost straight up; you could set your watch by him and do well. I’ve been looking for a visual trigger (a light, a door closing, something) and I can’t find it.
