Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

So many bastards, so little time.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

The words do not have to be perfect.

As we gird up our loins for battle…

So over the last few months kids keep coming into the library asking if we have any books about this thing FORTNITE. We don't and I'd never heard of it so I tried asking what it was.

— Orkney Library (@OrkneyLibrary) September 3, 2018

While his Dad looked through our Lee Child books (he was a huge fan so he was re-reading the series) I asked the boy to explain Fortnite to me.

And he did. He told me all about it. He taught me what nobody else had been able to teach me. And now I know two things.

— Orkney Library (@OrkneyLibrary) September 3, 2018

The only boy who could ever teach me, was the son of a Reacher fan. pic.twitter.com/mrLVneGONZ

They just dropped another nugget out of that WaPo/ABC poll last week that had Trump at 60% disapproval. The generic ballot question was 52-38 D.

Two data points from the same poll don’t corroborate each other, and it’s an “all adults” poll, but it still looks like a favorable hand dealt to Dems. Lots of people don’t start thinking about elections until after Labor Day, so the stage is set.

Watched The Surprise on Amazon Prime.

Cute and funereally genteel; the director and actors are wise enough to keep a lid on letting things get out of control and to move along in their own good time. Give it a rock-solid B (nothin’ wrong with that), rising to a B+ for the second half as they did dare to go skillfully in a direction one would at first have dismissed as too obvious. Nice enough as a diversion on a rainy evening, all in all.

While watching, one internally cringes thinking about how over the top and strained an American remake would be, botching up the whole thing and sucking out all the sweetness in favor of cheap gags.

‘Early access’ in this case doesn’t mean what it used to. Fortnite is always adding features, and the most recent numbers indicate it had more than 3 million concurrent players playing. One of which is my ten year old daughter. These kids are looking for strategy guides, most likely.

I’d even heard of Fortnite, but only as a cartoony Minecraft-type game – I had no idea it had evolved a super popular battle-royale mode, or that Anne Laurie was even talking about the same thing at top. And I’m just completely baffled as to how I could have missed that development. 125 million players and I had no idea? Even though I check out gaming sites pretty regularly?

We went to see a Tina Turner show here in WV years ago. Amazing crowd, high-end dressed black folks in so many different styles… and such a great show. I can understand why she just moved to Europe to get away from — well — all the hate for wealthy black stars here.

I can’t do action video games with our internet service, by the time I see something that needs shot or scored on, do something and it gets back to gamer HQ, everything has moved on from where I scored/shot/moved. Would be so frustrating!

Anyone read the twit-thread about Qanon? Pretty strange mix of occult, weird politics, twisted racist/anti-semetic memes and paranoia… interesting how whoever cooked it up mixed so much mythology up. Everything but Slendaman.

Jesus Christ, the game is not based on the Reacher novels. The librarian just used that as the hook for the “son of a Reacher man” joke referencing the “Son of a Preacher Man” song by Dusty Springfield.

The dad of the kid who explained the game to the librarian was there for Lee Child’s Reacher books—hence “the Reacher man” and the game-explaining kid as the “son of a Reacher man.”
