As we gird up our loins for battle…
So over the last few months kids keep coming into the library asking if we have any books about this thing FORTNITE. We don't and I'd never heard of it so I tried asking what it was.
— Orkney Library (@OrkneyLibrary) September 3, 2018
While his Dad looked through our Lee Child books (he was a huge fan so he was re-reading the series) I asked the boy to explain Fortnite to me.
And he did. He told me all about it. He taught me what nobody else had been able to teach me. And now I know two things.

The only boy who could ever teach me, was the son of a Reacher fan. pic.twitter.com/mrLVneGONZ

Agreed about Dusty Springfield. Far the best version. Also too, how could AL refuse to support someone whose non-stage name is:

They just dropped another nugget out of that WaPo/ABC poll last week that had Trump at 60% disapproval. The generic ballot question was 52-38 D.
Two data points from the same poll don’t corroborate each other, and it’s an “all adults” poll, but it still looks like a favorable hand dealt to Dems. Lots of people don’t start thinking about elections until after Labor Day, so the stage is set.

Watched The Surprise on Amazon Prime.
Cute and funereally genteel; the director and actors are wise enough to keep a lid on letting things get out of control and to move along in their own good time. Give it a rock-solid B (nothin’ wrong with that), rising to a B+ for the second half as they did dare to go skillfully in a direction one would at first have dismissed as too obvious. Nice enough as a diversion on a rainy evening, all in all.
While watching, one internally cringes thinking about how over the top and strained an American remake would be, botching up the whole thing and sucking out all the sweetness in favor of cheap gags.

I am getting through, thanks for asking. We just went through the one year deathaversary which was hard. And I occasionally still have hauntings in my dreams which, when about Julie, are the most real and the type you can’t wake up from ….
But I am getting through. I am so happy to be back teaching and the “get the kid into college” project is certainly keeping me busy. I swear to the FSM that colleges design this process to purposefully drive a wedge between parent and child so that the kid is just dying to get away from home….

Many of us are old enough to remember when one would prefer having a root canal performed by a blind, palsied dentist over trudging to the DMV. In many (most?) locales, things have improved since then, noticeably so in DMV employee demeanor.

Thanks be to Orkney–I love a good, long-wind-up, multi-word pun.
And even better that it’s the real live Orkney way the hell up in the North Sea, so far North it belonged to Norway until a few centuries ago.

Indeed, America’s greatest export has been African-American pop music. It will outlast all of the Boeing jets and Ford autos.

I notice that no one else is asking what it is, so I’m wondering: Am I the only one here who’d never heard of it?
Anyhow, I googled it (actually duckduckgo’ed it) and, if I’m getting the right answer, I’m guessing it’s a video game? Or is there some other Fortnite that kids are asking librarians about? Because I’m a little puzzed about why kids would be asking librarians for books about a video game that hasn’t even left Early Access yet, much less have enough time for people to research, write, and publish books about it.

Here’s one of my own, also lyric-based. I was a passenger on a French motorway when our driver overtook, on the inside, a car with Netherlands plates. I said, “you do realise you have just “passed the Dutchie on the left-hand side””, which was met with the expected groans and face-palming.

@JGabriel: I think wherever you landed on Google underplayed the games release and success. It’s been out for a year and the latest version is “Battle Royale”.
From Wikipedia:
“Fortnite Battle Royale became a resounding success, drawing in more than 125 million players in less than a year, and earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month, and since has been a cultural phenomenon.”
Bostondreams
@JGabriel:
‘Early access’ in this case doesn’t mean what it used to. Fortnite is always adding features, and the most recent numbers indicate it had more than 3 million concurrent players playing. One of which is my ten year old daughter. These kids are looking for strategy guides, most likely.
JGabriel
rikyrah: I
The funny thing is, I actually read gaming sites on a pretty regular basis. I’d read all about PlunkBat (PLayer UNKnown BATtlegrounds, for the uninitiated), so I knew the Battle Royale genre was a big thing now.
I’d even heard of Fortnite, but only as a cartoony Minecraft-type game – I had no idea it had evolved a super popular battle-royale mode, or that Anne Laurie was even talking about the same thing at top. And I’m just completely baffled as to how I could have missed that development. 125 million players and I had no idea? Even though I check out gaming sites pretty regularly?
Damn, things move fast these days.
JGabriel
@Frank McCormick:
Probably. I also think I probably wrote it off in it’s early stages as a Minecraft clone, and just subconsciously ignored any headlines/stories I saw about it afterward.
Jamie Nafus
@raven: That’s great and I hope that you have success for your pup. On the Facebook groups that I am in for my Addison’s dog, there are several dogs that use Bailey chairs for Megaesophagus. The dogs do very well. They are lucky dogs with attentive owners.

This Kavanaugh is a crazy MF in most every direction – he’s okay with foreigners spending big in our elections, and of course he is extremely hostile to Roe. And then on top of that, no judge (much less a SCOTUS one) appointed by the loon-in-chief should be confirmed until after the midterms AND after the Special Counsel’s investigation is over. Period. Call your Senators, write those op-eds, hit your social media accounts.

We went to see a Tina Turner show here in WV years ago. Amazing crowd, high-end dressed black folks in so many different styles… and such a great show. I can understand why she just moved to Europe to get away from — well — all the hate for wealthy black stars here.
I can’t do action video games with our internet service, by the time I see something that needs shot or scored on, do something and it gets back to gamer HQ, everything has moved on from where I scored/shot/moved. Would be so frustrating!
Anyone read the twit-thread about Qanon? Pretty strange mix of occult, weird politics, twisted racist/anti-semetic memes and paranoia… interesting how whoever cooked it up mixed so much mythology up. Everything but Slendaman.

Twitter question that I hope someone can answer. Whenever I click on a retweet of Trumps, and in reading the comments at least 95% are dumpTrumpers. Now I clicked on a Huckabee tweet, and the same thing. Am I seeing the actual tweets that Trump would see, or is my twitter feed controlled by some algorithm that twitter uses because they know I hate the bastard? Thanks!

@Immanentize: Peace to you and your youngster. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to lose a spouse so young.
sukabi
@JGabriel: the entire library thread has the answer…online video game launched last year, has 125 million followers / players. Apparently based on Lee Child’s books — Jack Teacher.
sukabi
@sukabi: Reacher, stupid autocorrect.
Steeplejack
@sukabi:
Jesus Christ, the game is not based on the Reacher novels. The librarian just used that as the hook for the “son of a Reacher man” joke referencing the “Son of a Preacher Man” song by Dusty Springfield.
The dad of the kid who explained the game to the librarian was there for Lee Child’s Reacher books—hence “the Reacher man” and the game-explaining kid as the “son of a Reacher man.”
Yet another joke killed by vivisection.
pcpablo
Tom Cruze is NOT Jack Reacher. The thought him in that role has made me take a sabbatical from the books till I purge!

@Steeplejack: Here’s the list. Child’s output seems roughly one per year.

The movies are actually pretty good, but, yeah, Tom Cruise is not Reacher.

Thanks, but even the titles run together. I just need to check my Nook and see which is the last one I downloaded. It has been a while, so there probably is a new one.
Same with Michael Connelly’s Bosch and Mickey Haller books.
