Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The willow is too close to the house.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The revolution will be supervised.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Bark louder, little dog.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

And really, I’m just sort of stunned and don’t really know what to say.

Only a fucking Republican would think committing treason to defend the country from a treasonous lunatic was a good idea. We’re run by complete idiots and it’s terrifying.

Re-read the op-ed from the position of a Republican donor. The writer is telling them not to lose their nerve and to keep the checkbook open. Yes, the op-ed states, we empowered a moron. But don’t worry because the mandarins are in control. There’s just enough apocalyptic language to get the NYT to publish it, but it’s really nothing more than a donor pitch

I remember 6 years ago when Glenn Beck was complaining about Obama’s unaccountable czars running the country, and here we’re in 2018 and it’s actually happening! This is nothing short of a coup, and our government is being run by anonymous cowards wrapping themselves in the flag and patting themselves on the back for destroying the environment while running up an incomprehensible tab on useless tax cuts. People should be taking to the streets over this shit! Fuck the Kavanaugh hearings, we need a national strike like yesterday!

Motive: As a political move this puts Pence in a position to clean up after God makes him president. Very Biblical all around.

Motive: Still young and not in prison, Ivanka is the only one that trump wouldn’t have summarily executed if he had the power.

Motive: Trump would be free to flee to one of his foreign palaces and live his life like a wronged king waiting for his chance to return to reclaim his rightful crown. He will die a tragic broken man – empty – mumbling “where is my Cohn?” “where is my military parade?” “where is my space force?” “bring me the traitors!.” In his mind he will have been the greatest Sovereign Lord eveh to build and lead a mighty Christian empire! Before the betrayal. A witches chorus will mock him without mercy. Very Shakespearean.

The head winds for congressional Republicans appear to be strengthening. Inside Wednesday’s closed-door meeting, GOP leaders emphasized their plans for a “no drama” legislative calendar over the coming weeks — including passing spending bills to avoid an Oct. 1 government shutdown. Hours later, Trump upended that sentiment by refusing to rule out a shutdown. “If it happens, it happens,” he told reporters.

And this was before the Night of Long Sporks of Dubious quality began today.

This is a communique to the donors and squishy Romney-ites. It is damage control from the GOP to stave off 25th amendment or impeachment talks as more shoes drop from Woodward and especially Mueller. There is no coup. It is ineffectual bureaucracy and soothing wounded pride for the fools who joined this circus. The grand resistance of the Praetorian GOP guard is stealing paper off the Orange Orangutan desk? Can we get them a purple heart for the paper cut they endured? This is infuriating because it is so petty and so ineffectual. We think we are up against Machiavelli and instead, our adversary is a group of spineless syphilitic monkeys who are challenged by matching their right and left shoe in the morning.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) allegedly spent campaign cash on affairs with five separate individuals, according to prosecutors who reportedly claim to have photographic evidence.
Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted last month on 60 charges related to the alleged misuse of $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses such as lavish vacations and dinners. The couple has pleaded not guilty.
The San Diego Union-Tribune is now reporting that the 47-page charging document alleges that the congressman had “personal relationships” with at least five individuals, none of whom are identified.

This was the attitude of Preibus, McMaster, Mattis, Rosenstein, Wray, Coats, Pompeo, Mnuchin, and all the rest for at least 20 months.

The Kavanaugh hearings are far more important and we should be talking about them more. Women’s liberty, union rights, gay rights, criminal justice, interstate commerce, health care and the rule of law are all at stake and we’re talking about some ridiculous op-ed by a cowardly Republican that concerns policy not at all. Kavanaugh blatantly lied in his 2006 confirmation hearings. He abjectly refuses to answer reasonable questions. He uses right wing buzz words to mask his clear intent. He would be a terrible Justice.

    @Aleta:

And the MSM says, “Yay! Problem solved!” rather than rushing over to the Senate and demanding answers from Republican leadership.

The fact that we see through the entire façade is immaterial to them.

Oh, good! I’m having a bourbon right now, in honor of the end of the American way of life.

Check out Trump’s demand that the NYTimes turn over the traitor over to the government for national security proposes, followed by a string of replies, my favorite is

    “The President is Insane!”

    @Kay:

Make the idiot clown do his actual job, and massively fail at it.

To be fair, Donald Trump has never had to do his job a single day in his life, and if he started to fail, Daddy always propped him up. Once Daddy was gone, a series of babks and business associates took over the propping-up.

He literally has no idea how to do a job. Any job. Much less a job as hard as being President of the United States.

@patroclus: So what issue do you suggest? I think you’re correct, but I don’t see how we do it.

And wasn’t there a long committee examination with lots of groups testifying vs Bork. And IIRC he would periodically make v blunt statements that revealed how awful his judicial philosophy was.

The Bork confirmation is what led to the modern day GOP SCOTUS candidates never answering any question directly. Bork’s comments destroyed his chances.

@lamh36: I know people want Kamala in the White House, but I am so pulling for her as AG.
