Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

“But what about the lurkers?”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The revolution will be supervised.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

This blog will pay for itself.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I lack the time to read all the comments today and I see Betty addressed Trump’s anonymonimousity, but have these Tweets been posted?

This hilarious, too-candid guy behind Trump was deemed an unsuitable background prop by the Trump choreographers. He was replaced (see next tweet) with someone who could actually feign enthusiasm for Dear Leader. pic.twitter.com/zwkXk0YP9L— Mrs. Betty Bowers (@BettyBowers) September 7, 2018

Here he is being replaced (and he's not the only one). “Kimmy, could we get someone in from the cattle call to replace the too-honest guy in the plaid? He’s a crisis. We need an actor!”pic.twitter.com/EEP4XdksG4— Mrs. Betty Bowers (@BettyBowers) September 7, 2018

    See the final paragraph below.

Papadopoulos has never publicly named those within the Trump campaign he told about the offer of emails from the professor, but he has said he was in regular touch with campaign chairman Paul Manafort, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and other top campaign officials.

He also used his connections to the professor to seek to broker a meeting between Trump and Putin. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who ran the Trump campaign foreign policy operation, has said he quickly rejected that idea when Papadopoulos raised it at a meeting in March 2016.

But in a pre-sentencing filing last week, Papadopoulos’s lawyers presented a different account, saying that candidate Trump “nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it.”

    Speaking of corporate hilarity.

“There was speculation that the Nike/Kaepernick campaign would lead to a drop in sales, but our data over the last week does not support that theory,” Hetal Pandya, co-founder of Edison Trends, tells Marketwatch.

“Nike’s online sales actually grew 31% from the Sunday of Labor Day weekend through Tuesday, as compared with a 17% gain recorded for the same period of 2017,” Marketwatch adds.

Trump is opposed to NFL players kneeling in silent protest of police killings of Black people. He has also called Kaepernick a “son of a bitch.”

Meanwhile, interest in Nike stock is also jumping.

“Nike has grown in popularity among millennial investors after releasing its controversial Colin Kaepernick ad,” Business Insider reports. “A total of 15,191 investors added Nike to their portfolios on Robinhood this week, up 45% from last week. Investors on Robinhood are buying Nike stock 300% more than they are selling, compared to 12% last week,” Robinhood’s data scientist Sahill Poddar told Business Insider on Tuesday. “Investors in Oregon, where Nike is headquartered, are buying the stock 850% more than they are selling.”

The popularity of Nike’s stock has jumped 20 points as well.

They can measure a stock’s popularity?

    Great FB post from Penzys:

An open letter to Conservatives. Please share.
Conservatives, we do love you. We warned you because we care—I know it hurts—You’ll get through this—2 Free 1/4-Cup jars up to $5.95 value each!
—I grew up in a Volkswagen bus. My best friend grew up in his father’s navy coat. He died a Marine from a cancer maybe from a war he fought and was left to clean up after. I respect you when you are right, and have no patience when you give up your values to unearned race-based praise. Still, the cliff you are now dropping off of with this week’s events is too steep for anyone to face alone. They fooled you, and shame on them for that. But then you let them fool you again, and again, and again. You and I know what that means. But always remember, you are not alone.

The good news is that you were raised with the strength to take responsibility for your actions. Now’s the time to use that strength to put things right. It won’t be easy. It will be possible. Now’s maybe also the time to use your choice of search engine to type in “Ryan” “Trump” and “textbook” to see, maybe for the first time, that the racism that took over your party long ago was there well before you voted for this administration. Now maybe this week for the first time you can see it. I trust you to find your way to make amends and put your actions right. It’s who you are.

A big part of how cooking works is that it’s a gift. Right now we are already preparing for the holiday season and a couple of big events before then. With our growth we don’t have a lot to spare, but yet in times like these, if cooking teaches us anything, it’s that the value of a gift freely given means all. So in addition to our Teacher boxes and $2 Pico Fruta and amazing Ginger, through Sunday 9.9.18 get two free 1/4-cup jars of your choice up to $5.95 each.

No coupons or codes needed for the Pico Fruta, Ginger, or Teacher/Embrace Hope offers, those are automatic for everyone.

To get your in store coupons for the two flat-out free 1/4-Cup jars in our stores click this link: http://spices.penzeys.com/coupon.html

Online at penzeys.com, to get your two free 1/4-cup jars, up to $5.95 in value each, simply add them to your cart. When you check out, you will see that the two 1/4-cup jars with the highest prices are marked as free. No coupon or code needed. Online the jars are free, but standard shipping options apply.

And please, it’s time for you to move your “leaders” to the curb. They’ve fooled you enough. Don’t buy into their new “Vote for us, and we will protect you from us.” You are better than that. Time for you to get back in the game. Your nation needs you.

    With great expectations,

    Bill Penzey

This is kind of hilarious, from Gabriel Sherman

According to three sources, Jared and Ivanka floated a theory on Wednesday that Kelly could be behind the Times op-ed. Under this scenario, the sources said, the op-ed was written by Zachary Fuentes, the deputy chief of staff, at the direction of Kelly. Jared and Ivanka have told people they suspect this because Kelly is the only one with an ego so large as to have convinced himself that he’s saving the country from Trump, …
Trump disagreed with their theory, an outside adviser said. He told one ally that the op-ed was possibly written by someone who wants to derail Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing by weakening the president this week, according to a person familiar with the conversation. Ivanka has been frustrated that her father won’t take action against Kelly, an outside adviser said. She’s told people that Trump still sees Kelly as a “John Wayne figure,” and that Trump is worried that if Kelly is fired, he’ll become even more dangerous as an outside critic.

I’ll admit I’ve never been a fan at the best of times, but Griffin claiming she has been persecuted because she’s a woman is really unhelpful. I find it completely credible that she has been unfairly yanked around by our government, but the moral of that story is don’t do a skit mixing a president and death. Griffin constantly playing the victim is odious. Zero sympathy…

Comedian Kathy Griffin in an interview that aired Friday on “Rising” said that the government singled her out after she posted a photo of her holding a fake severed head resembling President Trump because she’s a woman.

“I was on the no-fly list, and I had to be interrogated, like I said, by the feds under oath,” Griffin told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Thursday.

“That also didn’t happen to any of the other guys who supposedly threatened the president, and I was singled out, and I think it’s because I’m a woman, and probably because I’m 57, and I don’t have a big network or studio behind me,” she continued.

I guess I just don’t have your enlightened attitude about how we need to force innocent family members to suffer because their sister made a lame photographed joke about how much she hates Trump.

If Griffin didn’t want to get strip-searched at every airport in the US for two years, then she shouldn’t have made the joke. There’s Jason Greenblatt (mentioned in NYer Where Will the Trump Investigations Go Next?)

Politico put up his Public Financial Disclosure Report from 1/20/2017; it lists him as Executive Vice President & Chief Legal Officer of The Trump Organization from 1/1997 to 1/2017.
Then Assistant to the President and Special Representative for International Negotiations from 1/20. The NYer article says he is a senior adviser on Israel.
(Fwiw, it appears (at least to me) his disclosure form was revised 4 times in the first two months.)

From NYer: He may know a fair bit about Trump’s more troubling deals. Greenblatt’s rise came just as the Trump Organization was in the early stages of its frenzy of overseas dealmaking with people who were convicted of crimes or whose past deals showed potential signs of money laundering, sanctions violations, and other financial crimes. Greenblatt, several Trump Organization lawyers told me, was responsible for conducting due diligence on partners. He either conducted none or did such a meagre job that it is hard not to conclude that he deliberately avoided having any documentation regarding the company’s most dubious partners.

(Bloomberg) Last month, prosecutors said in indicting Cohen that two Trump company executives — one of whom is believed to be Weisselberg — approved the improper payments to Cohen in violation of campaign-finance laws. Investigators are looking at those people and others who may have been aware of the activities, according to the person.

As for possible others, there’s Trump’s executive assistant in the Trump Org, Rhona Graff.

(NYer, linked above) She was the interface between Trump and the rest of the world: she answered and made his phone calls, read and wrote his e-mails, ushered people into his office, and scheduled his out-of-office interactions. Graff may not know the details of any particular deal, but she—more than anyone else—could reconstruct Trump’s social, business, and political network.

She’s known for having articles and quotes attributed to other people (placed in the NYT, Politico etc.) that mention her ‘quiet moderating influence’ and ‘working quietly behind the scenes’ and ‘The Quiet Power Behind Trump.’

Is this from a) Op ed or b) Past articles about Ivanka/Jared? : “Go to great lengths to keep bad decisions contained to the West Wing, though they are clearly not always successful.”
