Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

No one could have predicted…

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Second rate reporter says what?

The willow is too close to the house.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Everybody saw this coming.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

This may be the most exceptional gathering of bigots, conspiracy mongers, and know-nothings ever assembled, with the possible exception of the last time Trump dined alone. https://t.co/gPlpBKUfLK

— Radley Balko (@radleybalko) September 13, 2018

… because there are no reports of “incidents” at last night’s big hoedown. “Gateway Pundit” Jim Hoft has a hard-earned reputation as The Dumbest Man on the Internet, a reputation he zealously upholds, and the level of free-floating paranoia among his little playmates must be somewhere in the stratosphere by this point…

While he awaits sentencing for lying to the FBI, former national security advisor Michael Flynn will take his awards where he can get them—even if that means appearing alongside Pizzagate pushers and racist YouTubers…

Flynn is scheduled to appear Friday night, following a series of speeches on why “President Trump Is #Winning.” Flynn, whose contacts with Russian and Turkish officials have brought scrutiny on the Trump administration, is arguably not the best spokesperson for #Winning…

The outlet’s conference is shaping up to be just as conservative and conspiratorial. The three-day lineup includes Pizzagate pushers Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec, conservative sting videomaker James O’Keefe, Turning Point USA talking heads Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk, and racist YouTuber Stefan Molyneux, who has been accused of luring followers into a “cult” that encouraged them to cut ties with their families—claims he denied when they first surfaced in 2008…

The Gateway Pundit conference will feature events with titles like “The Fraud of Transgenderism,” “Authentic Abstinence: It Works Every Time!!” and “Inconvenient Facts: How rising temperatures and increasing CO2 are benefiting the Earth and humanity.” Flynn’s award will be followed by a talk titled “They’re Back! The Ten Commandments as the Foundation of Law” and a showing of a Cernovich movie.

The event’s two other awards are the “Full-time Homemaker of the Year Award,” and the “Phyllis Schlafly Award for Excellence in Leadership,” which will go to Rep. Steve King, the anti-immigrant Iowa Republican who retweeted a white nationalist yesterday.

Perfect. You could add all these goobers’ IQ scores together and still not reach three digits.

“Authentic Abstinence” or, how I learned to reframe my inability to attract women.

That Flynn worked in the WH house (and for Obama before that, ugh….) is just vile.

I’m sure part of Flynn’s deal with Mueller precludes this, but I still think he should be recalled to active duty, stand before a court martial, be stripped of rank and pension and dismissed for the good of the service.

I’m thinking that the judge and prosecutors might think Flynn isn’t showing proper remorse at his sentencing. I mean, it’s kind of hard to convince people you’re remorseful over your crimes for the Trump administration when you go partying with people who think Mueller’s investigation is a deep state conspiracy.

    So are many of us.
Some of us live/lived in the storm area and may have damage.
We couldn’t be of much or any use if we showed up to help, we’d most likely just be another mouth to feed. So will money help? Not all that much with the current situation, but it probably will when the maladministration fucks up the recovery.
Nature is stronger than all of us combined, it is going to do whatever it wants and we try to live through it and recover as best as we can. I got in a vehicle accident that should have killed me because of the 1994 Northridge earthquake and between the quake damage and my accident, I lost my business. And into six figures of dollars. Should people from NC have come to help me? I didn’t think so then and I don’t think we can to that now.
I am very sorry that people you know are in trouble, but life can be terrible like that. I’m not trying to be smug, smart ass or to make you even madder or sadder but really what can we do? What do you expect from us?

Noted that Fitzcarraldo is available on Amazon Prime. Mentioned for those who may never have seen it. Harrowing, astounding, bothersome and fascinating all in one. Like most Werner Herzog films, sprinkled with flaws which serve to throw the genius of the cinematic achievement into sharp relief.

And for those who haven’t seen it and choose to do so, keep in mind it was filmed without benefit of CGI.

Unfortunately, Burden of Dreams, a “making of” documentary about the filming of Fitzcarraldo, while also on Amazon, is not free. Shame as it is well worth watching, a rare case of a making of documentary being in many ways a better movie than the recognized as great film it depicts.

In the meantime, local emergency responders can help rescue people caught in the floods, but all the rest of us can do is hope and/or pray for them. The Girl has been safely (if untidily) restrung. Someday I’d like meet the Fender product manager for the Squier Affinity line and ask what in the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s name possessed them not to use traditional Telecaster through-the-body stringing in this one guitar. With traditional Teles, you poke the string through its hole in the back of the guitar and it comes out the other side already through the saddle. With Affinity Teles, you must thread a 0.009″ diameter wire through a tiny hole in the back of the bridge and then up through the saddle, without being able to guide the string into the saddle. It is a finicky and frustrating job that makes restringing take much longer than it needs to. Harrumph.

  60. 60.

    worn

    September 16, 2018 at 3:58 am

@Amir Khalid: Put a slight kink/bend in the end of the string, about a half inch from the end. That will allow you to angle it up and through much easier. I too have an Affinity Tele; you pay more for the string thru models, unfortunately.

  61. 61.

    worn

    September 16, 2018 at 4:01 am

By up and through I mean, they don’t want to jam into the back of the saddles, if you keep the bend ‘up’.

    @worn:
I learned to do that from a YouTube video. Even then it’s still finicky and frustrating. The Standard doesn’t cost that much more, but Fender doesn’t make it in butterscotch blonde or a nice plain solid colour. For butterscotch blonde you have to get the Classic Vibe, which costs twice as much as the Affinity and comes with a sop to the old-school fetishists: the idiotic two-strings-to-a-saddle bridge, because of course players want guitars that are impossible to intonate properly. Grump.

Funny how the 10 commandments enthusiasts seem to treat #8 (Thou shalt not bear false witness) as null and void. I mean the irony of the pizzagate guy at a gathering that supports the 10 commandments is off the charts.

@Raoul: Funny how the “incel” (involuntarily celibate) boys attend conferences that praises abstinence. It’s right up there with the point raised above regarding professional liars like the PizzaGate guy attending a conference based on the 10 Commandments – I guess God was kidding about that whole “thou shalt not bear false witness” thing. (Of course, it reads “thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” – so I guess it’s OK to lie about the folks across the street…

Somewhere JFK and Thomas J. are having a chuckle over that tweet.
