Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) outlined a plan to limit testimony at Monday’s planned hearing to that provided by Kavanaugh and Ford — which brought cries of protest from Democrats.
They insisted that other witnesses also be called, including Mark Judge, a Kavanaugh friend who Ford said witnessed the assault.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the top Democrat on the committee, said it was “impossible to take this process seriously,” noting that 22 witnesses appeared at the hearing in 1991, when law professor Anita Hill accused Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.
“What about other witnesses like Kavanaugh’s friend Mark Judge?” Feinstein said in a statement. “What about individuals who were previously told about this incident? What about experts who can speak to the effects of this kind of trauma on a victim? This is another attempt by Republicans to rush this nomination and not fully vet Judge Kavanaugh.”
Speaking to reporters later, Grassley defended his plan.
“We’ve had two people that want to tell their story and that’s what we’re gonna do,” he said.
Pressed about the precedent of the Hill hearing, Grassley said: “You’re talking about history. We’re not looking back. We’re looking forward.”

Well, I have yet to see a Bigfoot cooler, so I can believe they’re different.
The No. 2 Republican in the Senate on Tuesday sharply questioned the credibility of the woman who has accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, as GOP leaders indicated they will limit witnesses at next week’s hearing to just the Supreme Court nominee and his accuser.
Speaking to reporters, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said he was concerned by “gaps” in the account of Christine Blasey Ford, a psychology professor in California, who told The Washington Post in an interview published Sunday that Kavanaugh drunkenly pinned her to a bed on her back, groped her and put his hand over her mouth at a house party in the early 1980s when the two were in high school.
“The problem is, Dr. Ford can’t remember when it was, where it was, or how it came to be,” Cornyn told reporters at the Capitol late Tuesday morning.
When asked whether he was questioning the accuser’s account — which Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied — Cornyn said, “There are some gaps there that need to be filled.”
Sounds like you need to do a proper investigation on this matter, which means you can’t have the vote next week. Sounds like you should’ve vetted this candidate properly, instead of trying to rush through this usual Rethug piece of garbage.
Interesting and perhaps disturbing moment a short time ago as Carrie Severino, spokesperson of the Judicial Crisis Network, was interviewed on CNN. The JCN is the central campaign arm for Republican judicial nominations. The Federalist Society grooms and chooses the nominees. The JCN runs the campaigns, runs political ads in Senators’ states, as necessary. Here Severino argues that it’s not clear that what Ford describes wasn’t simply “rough horse play” as opposed to attempted rape.
My wife sent me this and is beyond livid. They all need to be voted out. All of them, Katie. Also how can we defund these fucking horrible conservative networks? They all need to go.

Trump said Tuesday that he feels “terribly” for Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, his Supreme Court nominee who could face off in a high-stakes hearing next week with a woman who has accused him of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers.
“I feel so badly that he’s going through this,” Trump said during a news conference at the White House. “This is not a man who deserves this.”
Trump called Kavanaugh “a great gentleman” and lamented that his wife and daughters are experiencing the public airing of accusations that Trump said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) should have brought up ealier in his confirmation process.

It would be hard to find a congressman more out of touch with his district. One reason might be that Paulsen has not had a true town hall meeting with constituents in 7 years, instead choosing to hold “telephone town halls” where he can pre-screen questions. He held one supposedly public set of meetings in June, but they were only open to a tiny number of people. When asked why he does not hold town halls by Southwest News Media, he complained that “People turn them into a gotcha moment or a shouting moment.”
So it was something of a surprise to his constituents when, in a debate with Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party opponent Dean Phillips, Paulsen claimed he gets his best ideas by listening to the voters. In fact, attendees found it so ridiculous that they burst out laughing at him.

Nearly a dozen lawyers now assist Trump in contending with two federal investigations, one in Washington and one in New York, that could pose serious threats to his presidency and his businesses. But the expanding legal team is struggling to understand where the investigations could be headed and the extent of Mr. Trump’s legal exposure.
The lawyers have only a limited sense of what many witnesses — including senior administration officials and the president’s business associates — have told investigators and what the Justice Department plans to do with any incriminating information it has about Mr. Trump, according to interviews with more than a dozen people close to the president.
What is more, it is not clear if Mr. Trump has given his lawyers a full account of some key events in which he has been involved or during his decades running the Trump Organization.

Um…isn’t precedent important when it comes to a Supreme Court Justice. The irony wasn’t lost on me at least.
Whoever said the other day that a Republican’s verbal response to issues of double standards (re: if a Democrat had done) would boil down to some variation of “I’m not going to talk about hypotheticals” was spot on.
Summer of ’82: The time period when 26-yr-old Anita Hill was spending her days trying to suppress her gag reflex every time her boss spoke to her, while just down the road a young Brett Kavanaugh was living out the drunk-frat-boy life that would lead him to his current pickle.
I really think we should mount a campaign to remove Thomas from office, on the grounds that he lied repeatedly during his confirmation hearings. That we’ve allowed that confirmation to stand for the last 30 years is a damned disgrace.
As we all know, this will unfold in predictable stages
The Republicans aren’t as disciplined about these things as they used to be. They’re getting the different stages all mixed up, so some people are still claiming it’s a fabrication and some are already to excusing it as “boys will be boys”. There are even some who have gone ahead to “what about Bill Clinton”.
I really think we should mount a campaign to remove Thomas from office, on the grounds that he lied repeatedly during his confirmation hearings. That we’ve allowed that confirmation to stand for the last 30 years is a damned disgrace.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said an FBI investigation is “essential” to prevent the hearing from becoming merely a “he said, she said affair.”
Republicans responded that reopening the investigation is up to the White House and they are sticking with their plans for a Monday hearing — with or without Ford’s participation.
I was not aware that Congress had decamped to Australia.
Kavanaugh spoke with the Judiciary panel’s counsel Monday and gave a “clear and consistent” account of what happened 36 years ago, said a person who wasn’t authorized to be identified while describing the process. The person described Kavanaugh as “resolute” and eager to defend himself.
And this would be the third or fourth change to his alibi now?

Among the GOP defectors was Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, a Judiciary Committee member who has clashed bitterly with Trump and is retiring from the Senate. Flake said he told No. 2 Senate Republican leader John Cornyn of Texas on Sunday that “if we didn’t give her a chance to be heard, then I would vote no.”
There was enormous pressure on GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, two moderates who have yet to announce their positions on Kavanaugh and aren’t on the Judiciary Committee.
Collins said that in a telephone conversation with Kavanaugh on Friday he was “absolutely emphatic” that the assault didn’t occur. She said it would be “disqualifying” if Kavanaugh was lying. Murkowski said Ford’s story “must be taken seriously.” Neither Collins nor Murkowski faces re-election this fall.
The problem with the other top choices is that they’ve been a LOT more clear on how they stand on Roe. If enough time gets eaten up with this nonsense & they have to start over with a whole new set of committee hearings and documents, it’s possible they’ll have lost too much time. They need to put this completely away before the elections, or at least be well into the process so they can claim it’s a legit use of the lame duck period to finish it off before the next senate is seated.
I mean, it’s ALL a long, long shot, but not impossible. Kav goes down after an ugly hearing makes it impossible for women senators to vote for him … Ds pull off a takeover of the senate … and refuse to fill the seat that was Kennedy’s with someone who is not a centrist judge.
116.

I just don’t understand this: if they are going to have a hearing on Monday, why is Collins getting Kavenaugh’s story beforehand. Why is he pre-briefing a lawyer who works (presumably) for the majority on the committee. Sounds like stories are being tested and solidified by the same people who will be “judging” his honesty.
The thing about Bill Clinton is I don’t think he ever had to force himself on women, I think enough of them lined up
That’s the biggest reason Rethugs hate and fear him. They’re so very jealous.

They really have to choose. They can’t toggle back and forth between “wasn’t there, didn’t happen” and minimizing what did happen. How many people work for the Federalist Society and The Judicial Crisis Network? They can’t come up with a single coherent defense?

Yetis are Asian, from the Himalayas, and their habitat may stretch as far as the Hindu Kush.
Bigfoots are North American, and largely wiped out except in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, BritishColombia). The Missouri Ozarks population of Bigfoots, named “Momos”, died out before I was born.

Hey, I just read an article on another progressive site about how a lawyer named Cyrus Sanai has ‘important information’ on Kavanaugh, and has been trying to get it to the Senate Judiciary Committee since July.
The gist is that Kavanaugh’s mentor was a perv too, and retired before his past could catch up with him. Sanai says he has ‘witnesses’ who can shed light on Kavanaugh’s behavior.
Do tell.

Weird timing thing that I just realized …
Summer of ’82: The time period when 26-yr-old Anita Hill was spending her days trying to suppress her gag reflex every time her boss spoke to her, while just down the road a young Brett Kavanaugh was living out the drunk-frat-boy life that would lead him to his current pickle.
I really think we should mount a campaign to remove Thomas from office, on the grounds that he lied repeatedly during his confirmation hearings. That we’ve allowed that confirmation to stand for the last 30 years is a damned disgrace.

The Republicans aren’t as disciplined about these things as they used to be. Trump: –FBI doesn’t want to investigate. –We’re not going to rush. –We’re going to get this done quickly.
Collins: –I’m puzzled. –I really hope that she doesn’t pass up this opportunity.

I think they’re screwed. Think of the flow chart of how this plays out.
Shove Kav through quick: yes = enraged women, no = need a new candidate stat, with time running out to shove that dude through before the midterms.
Bounce Kav: yes = pissed off R base, no = longer process & less likelihood he gets the votes
They’re trying to walk a line that doesn’t exist. Trump overruled McConnell by choosing the most difficult guy, and now they’re stuck with him. Kav will spend the rest of his life with a cloud labeled “thug” over his head no matter what happens next. If they don’t get this done before we vote, Democrats are going to FINALLY be motivated by the Supreme Court with the same intensity Rs have brought for the last 40 years.

They reframe the argument: ‘Not fair to hold someone accountable for loutish mistakes in their 20s.’ ‘Dems are cheating.’ ‘Feinstein.’

Wapiti
I just don’t understand this: if they are going to have a hearing on Monday, why is Collins getting Kavenaugh’s story beforehand. Why is he pre-briefing a lawyer who works (presumably) for the majority on the committee. Sounds like stories are being tested and solidified by the same people who will be “judging” his honesty.

Cant say I love this ad. Its the sort of ad that makes me think someone on staff fell in love with a concept and couldn’t let it go. Too clever by half. If Phillips needed a breakthrough ad, something to get people to pay attention to his race, it’s one thing, but he’s at the top of Red to Blue, has been raising money like crazy all year, and already has all of that. Paulsen (a true hypocrite and fraud) has been hammering Phillips as a sleazy businessman who can’t be trusted. Not sure this hits back hard enough.
