Here's the offending ad, FYI.
It is indeed pretty offensive, asking if you'd rather worship an elephant or a donkey. pic.twitter.com/fyZ1DRtwrm

Okay, it’s Texas, where subtlety is probably a capital offense.
But does this mean we should look forward to November’s “Happy Day of the Dead, Hispanic voters! Let us remind you that Republicans *love* producing more dead people!” ads?
Major Major Major Major
Oh boy holy crap!
dmsilev
If they worship elephants, I guess that means that Trump Jr. regularly commits deicide?

If you’re quick, you can grab the .gov address.

That is offensive on so many levels it is hard to know where to start. Let’s just go with gah… and leave it right there.
PhoenixRising
Fort Bend County, Texas once liberated $188 from my wallet in the form of a citation for speeding. The process of searching my vehicle took 2 hours at the side of the road. I am not surprised by this. I’m appalled. But not shocked.
Roger Moore
And to top it off, it appears they stole the graphic of Ganesha from somebody else and just slapped their extra messages onto it. They didn’t even bother to edit out the Zomato logo. It’s hard to get more Republican than that.
Major Major Major Major
@Roger Moore: It’s very “something your aunt/uncle made for Facebook.”
Mnemosyne
Given how often Republicans insist that Jeebus is on their side and hates liberals, I’m not surprised that they would decide to branch out and start claiming that the gods of other religions agree with them, too.
Adam L Silverman
Given that Cruz stated that if Beto’s elected then the latter will outlaw barbecue by legislation, this is almost the dumbest Texas GOP thing I’ve seen today.
Adam L Silverman
What did Schrodinger’s Cat know and when did she know it?!?!?!?!?
sukabi
@Adam L Silverman: tomorrow’s another day, there’ll be something stupider.

@sukabi:
I just might start telling myself this right before bed each night.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
Well…Not to often you see minorities doing offensive caricatures of their own deeply held personally beliefs. I wonder if these dears realize “The Elephant” is the American Civil War as in “Seeing the Elephant”
sukabi
@Major Major Major Major: that’s about the only thing that’s a given with this bunch.
Major Major Major Major
@sukabi: yes, it’s an interesting inevitability to meditate on.

Ganesh is the Hindu god of wisdom, of course, which is, HAHHAHA, the utter opposite of the GOP and, especially, the Texas GOP, which specializes in rank ignorance, racism, misogyny, corruption and, of course, xenophobia.
The Hindu response to this “ad” was very polite because they know that, in Texas, you can get shot for just about any reason or no reason.

I’m done. Night all.
I did get my whole house fan today. All seems well.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: That’s a cartoon(ish) depiction of Ganesha, remover of obstacles, clearly done for the instruction of children in their faith.

Brisket is brisketing in the Instant Pot. Plan is to use the same pot to make roast baby potatoes afterwards.

@NotMax: That’s going to be an awfully heavy breakfast after Yom Kippur.

To the night owls, a thread worthy of Pulitzer in Twitter storytelling:

Haven’t been an observant to anything religious fellow since I was, oh, 5 years old. Also have practiced a regimen of preferably avoiding eating during daylight hours since 1964. No breakfast, no lunch.
BTW, got a Florida story queued up for the morning thread, if I remember, as it will fit in there mo’ better.
jonas
And speaking of holy days, years ago Jay Leno turned up a great “headline” blooper in a local ad circular: “We wish all of our Jewish customers a festive and joyful Yom Kippur!”
Quaker in a Basement
Ganesh isn’t an elephant. He’s the son of the goddess Parvati, who was beheaded by Shiva (Parvati’s husband) and then given an elephant’s head as a replacement. So from the neck down, he’s just a regular diety guy.
jl
Problematic, offensive, offensively hilarious, and dumb as a rock. Also dishonest, since the symbols of well-being and good associated with Ganesha are theh opposite of the mess that the GOP has become. Too clever by one tenth.
It is empty posturing that the GOP tries and tries but always falls flat because so dishonest and superficial. This example is somewhere between Ryan trying to look like a gym bro with his cap on backwards getting ready to crush out some concentration curls on a gym bench, and Trump emitting a sinister smile over a taco salad.
jl
@jl: I forgot ‘pathetic’. It’s like throwing an egg on a sidewalk on a scorching day, and persuading yourself it is a great ‘hot take’ and the fried egg will be delicious.

I have too much outrage fatigue, at this point, to be offended.
At least it is better than Pat Robertson and the like declaring Hindus are going to hell.
rikyrah
@Dog Dawg Damn:
Powerful thread??
Sloane Ranger
This is not only insulting, it’s patronising. To my mind that’s even worse. But whoever thought this up is probably a Christianist who thinks Hindus are a bunch of idol worshipping heathens whose votes, unfortunately, they may need at this time.
Also brown skinned and, therefore, simple minded enough to believe that the fact that the Republican logo happens to be an elephant can be sold to them as some sort of sign.

@NotMax: And such and easy pot to clean!

@Dog Dawg Damn: Spent an hour reading this Twitter feed and the heartbreaking comments, many of which made me realize how many “straight” people need a place and a way to express their deep sadness and grief. I’ve got so many stories of losing friends and lovers in so many terrible flavors.
Thanks so much and I hope you repost in a live post. Its why LGBTQ people fear Kavanaugh and so many Federalist types. It’s why I have a difficult time reading about refugees and young black lives taken and the horrors of Wahhabist and Christianist ideologies. It rings personal bells that are the daily manifestation of heartless beliefs.
EveryDayIHaveTheBlues
I was a follower of Hinduism (technically, Sanathana Dharma) a while back, and this misguided attempt at cultural comity is the least offensive thing about the GOP in these times.
They can still go jump off a cliff.
trnc
@Sloane Ranger: Apart from the fact that it’s crazy offensive, which of these parts of the text scream typical GOP orthodoxy:
– Think outside the box
– Listen to others attentively
– Cut off bonds of materialistic attachments
– Giving and sharing (outside of the 0.1%)
– None of the above
Most of those are straight up punchlines in any Daily Caller or Fox News comment threads. Maybe the exception is “Look beyond what you see” as a way to ignore the cancer obviously caused by coal sludge, chromium, etc.
schrodingers_cat
This flyer is tone-deaf and ridiculous more than offensive. Most South Asians, Indians included vote overwhelmingly D around 80% in the last election. Ganesha is the embodiment of knowledge and wit. Values foreign to Rs.
@Roger Moore: IIRC Zomato is a restaurant review site. This image is clearly stolen.
@<a [email protected]Roger Moore: ref=”#comment-7022049″>Adam L Silverman: Why the hell should I know anything about this
@EveryDayIHaveTheBlues: Santan Dharma? Technically it means orthodox religion and I have never heard any Hindu describe themselves as such, including my husband’s strictly observant Tamil Iyer grandfather.
Only place I have seen this term used is on Sangh friendly internet forums.
schrodingers_cat
@schrodingers_cat: * Sanatan not Santan.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
The entire image including the text was stolen. Found it here on somebody’s blog with the whole title, “Things to learn from Lord Ganesha” and the attribution “Photo courtesy: Zomato”.
https://goenchimathi.wordpress.com/2013/09/10/things-to-learn-from-lord-ganesha/
Not sure whether it had an earlier history than that, but that’s what I’ve found so far.
EveryDayIHaveTheBlues
@schrodingers_cat: Didn’t know about the Sangh friendly internet forums. As a rule, I don’t dip my toes into the scum filled ponds of the internets… A long time ago, I was reading some Wendy Doniger (precisely because she seemed to enrage some of the more intolerant hindutva-types), and I came upon this term which seemed to me to be a more universal phrase for the faith.
It is perhaps true that many people from South Asia vote for Ds, but it is appalling to me how many Hindus either work for this administration (Raj Shah, Ajit Pai) or approve of or are tolerant of their idiocy (eg: Tulsi Gabbard: you and I have discussed her before)
schrodingers_cat
@EveryDayIHaveTheBlues:
Perhaps? If you don’t believe me, here is reporting from NPR:

I find it amusing that the Republican outreach to other religions, especially Judaism is so clumsy. After all, most of the Republicans are Evangelicals and Fundamentalists who believe all these people are going to hell anyway.
EveryDayIHaveTheBlues
@schrodingers_cat: I believe you re: D and Obama. Why would anyone want to vote for a party that so clearly demonstrates its hatred for anyone not rich and white?
You are of course absolutely right that there are craven careerists in every ethnic group. I do think that there is a unique strain of Hindutva-focused idiocy that is admiring of the president. This is despite all of the evidence showing that he is a racist bigot who imitates and makes fun of their beloved prime minister. Sad!
schrodingers_cat
@EveryDayIHaveTheBlues: Most of the Indian Twitter handles that praise T are based in India, go figure. Its a concerted effort and does not seem organic. I haven’t yet figured out the motivation behind this campaign.
Matt
@EveryDayIHaveTheBlues: Same strain also venerates a certain failed painter with a shitty mustache from Austria, so there’s a common thread…
