Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

People are weird.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

The revolution will be supervised.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

The willow is too close to the house.

Every time today you get livid and want to break shit during the Kavanaugh hearings, here is a picture of Lily sleeping off breakfast in her bed while rocking an amazing new bow:

Be like Lily today, act like Rosie with a possum (she’s killed three this year and there is nothing I can do to stop her) on November 6th.

I teach high school government classes – planned on running the hearings live as we are just starting our Constitution unit (I’m serious, no pre-planning on my part!). Got to school and all of my technology is out and can’t be fixed until after school today…it’s a sign from above I should just stay off today :)

The last two weeks have been hard. I called my blog schroedinger’s cat because I used to feel like that cat in the many universe interpretation, one cat in many worlds. Since United States elected T and gave all the keys to Rs I often feel like the proverbial dhobi ka kutta, or the washerman’s dog who belongs nowhere (neither at the river bank nor at home).

Staying calm today will be a bit easier in Raleigh, NC, since our city is hosting the annual IBMA World of Bluegrass – with live music all over downtown today through Saturday. The Bluegrass music world respects its women – Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Allison Brown, Becky Bueller, Missy Raines etc. are all up on stage this weekend – most of those named have won “best” awards at this festival one year or another.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: I’m at work and they would probably frown on me breaking the metagenomic sequencer or flow cytometer equipment in my lab in a fit of rage. For my own career future I’m planning to stay here for the play-by-play and only watch video of this shit show after I get home tonight.

At least there I only have to pay a quarter if my son hears me swear. After tonight it may bloody well end up being his college fund.

When you consider that women have been blamed for “ruining everything” going back to the garden of Eden, the last 100 years or so actually seem like real progress in that context. Here’s a fool from my neck of the woods, heard about him on the local sports radio this morning:

    newsweek.com/video-tennessee-school-athletic-director-says-girls-ruin-everything-gets-1141377

His kind is the reason I got rid of my guns when I started having daughters – I would probably end up using them

When Anthony Kennedy announced his resignation from the Supreme Court, Republicans viewed the opportunity to replace him as a galvanizing moment for the GOP’s voter base, despite President Donald Trump’s poor poll numbers.
But after Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination became mired in controversy over sexual assault allegations, it’s actually Democrats who are more motivated to vote in this year’s midterm elections by the fight over the high court’s next member.

I’m not surprised. Democrats want someone to fight Trump and Kavanaugh = Trump.

@Kay: The Rs haven’t really paid much of an electoral price for what they wrought on the country since Reagan or may be even earlier. It helps to press as their mouthpiece, so the R POV morphs into CW.

    @schrodingers_cat:

Political media always look at things from the perspective of the GOP base. But guess what. We have a base too.

This is how it went, IMO. Democratic base opposes Trump. Trump picks nominee. Nominee turns out to suck. Democratic base is energized because Trump’s nominee sucks and therefore they can oppose him and maybe prevail. They didn’t just want to fight Trump. They wanted to win. And Trump and Kavanaugh created the conditions where that was possible- because they’re both horrible.

    September 27, 2018 at 10:25 am

    @schrodingers_cat:

Agree 100% about “the default”. They usually describe our base as a series of “interest groups” which makes them sound grasping and self-interested. We’re allowed to have a base and we’re allowed to fight for what they want. What they want right now is for the people they supported and elected to fight Donald Trump and it’s completely legit they want that.

Trump picked a bad SCOTUS nominee. They absolutely should oppose him and I hope they win. Special K doesn’t deserve the job. He’s another bad Trump hire and we’ll be stuck with this one for life.

Last night for the first time I googled the guy who thought he was going to rape me when I was 17 and he was 19. He’s dead. Died in 2010. He had lived for 30 years just a few miles from where I had moved, across the country, shortly after high school. From his obituary it sounds like he had a good life. I have too. It may not reflect well on me, but it gives me satisfaction to have outlived him.

I can’t imagine being as brave as Dr Ford is this morning. She is a hero. It’s crushing to watch what she is being put through. I’m glad my attacker is dead. I can’t imagine if he were a candidate for the highest court.
