    So many pop songs of the mid-70s are SUPER messed up, and yet they’re all in my brain because they were radio hits. Ugh.

    Yes, her testimony was heartbreaking and seemed sincere. She plainly has suffered. Kavanaugh, too, has suffered immensely. Nearly losing control throughout his emotional statement, he was as credible as his accuser. Riveted by the proceedings, I felt at times I should have looked away rather than play voyeur to the humiliation of two fine people — stripped of dignity and emotionally exposed before the world.

    While many were horrified by Graham’s anger, I found it as cleansing and refreshing as a dip in the River Jordan. His points, meanwhile, were compelling.

    @Miss Bianca: Per-impression ad revenue has been falling. Consider that Google and Facebook have created virtually unlimited ad supply, so the value of each ad is dropping. The only way to maintain revenues is to push more ads. It’s a vicious cycle.

    @Amir Khalid: Yep, that’s one of the classics. I had an album recorded at some obscure folk festival in Michigan back when I was a kid, featuring my sister and her then-husband singing that song. I played it over and over to try to learn the lyrics.

    Maybe that early conditioning is why I still have a fatal jones for a murder ballad, even as I deplore the subject matter.

On the main campus I was basically taking classes with Oded, Devin, Benny, and Schifra in the department and then a bunch of polisci and history classes out of the department. I was Bill Shapiro’s student in polisci at Ox.

    I was one of the four Jones Scholars selected to go to St. Andrews beginning in the Fall of 92.

    If you’d looked at the URL for the post, you’d see that the original title was “Hey Joe” — as in Jimi Hendrix’s rather famous “Hey Joe,” which is a murder ballad about a man planning to, and then shooting “my woman down.” Hence the subsequent discussions about murder ballads.
