Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Let’s finish the job.

This fight is for everything.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

White supremacy is terrorism.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I got tired of shaving my face. My wife likes fuzzy, so I grew my beard.

Our cat keeps staring at me now.

She knows it’s me. My voice, my smell, the way I open her cans… but I’ve got whiskers now.

She stares at my beard now so intently.

I did a massive house clean last week and as it turns out I’m not really all that messy. So now other than cheering Cougs/Seahawks I got nothing really going on.

    Awww.

My last two weeks at this job are looking to be pretty frustrating. The project we’re trying to get the team onboarded for is poorly documented and bug-riddled, and the people who wrote it are in Ukraine and won’t give us more than one hour of video chat (at 8am) with their lead developer next week. They really don’t want us to take over until January, so they can keep billing 300 hours for moving a couple buttons. I am getting out just in time!

Sweet tapdancing Christ on a Krispie Kream. STFU George, you still-worthless POS. Loomis turns over a turd to find this.

Former President George W. Bush has been advocating for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh with wavering senators in recent days. That’s according to a person familiar with the outreach who wasn’t authorized to discuss the development publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Kavanaugh is a former top aide in Bush’s administration.

Bush has spoken to Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine as well as Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia over the past several days — in an effort that the person familiar with the outreach says Bush initiated.

Is George W. Bush fine with a rapist on the Supreme Court! Yes, of course he is! This is because the Republican Party is a moral cancer on the nation.

    @Corner Stone:

FOOL, n. A person who pervades the domain of intellectual speculation and diffuses himself through the channels of moral activity. He is omnific, omniform, omnipercipient, omniscience, omnipotent. He it was who invented letters, printing, the railroad, the steamboat, the telegraph, the platitude and the circle of the sciences. He created patriotism and taught the nations war— founded theology, philosophy, law, medicine and Chicago. He established monarchical and republican government. He is from everlasting to everlasting— such as creation’s dawn beheld he fooleth now. In the morning of time he sang upon primitive hills, and in the noonday of existence headed the procession of being. His grandmotherly hand was warmly tucked-in the set sun of civilization, and in the twilight he prepares Man’s evening meal of milk-and-morality and turns down the covers of the universal grave. And after the rest of us shall have retired for the night of eternal oblivion he will sit up to write a history of human civilization.

I miss furry things. Our life is so complicated now we can’t add any more living creatures, but after waking up at 4am this morning to a long anxiety reel consisting of memories of every sexual assault I have ever experienced (they started at age 4 for me, so, yeah, not fun stuff) interspersed with visions of Kavanaugh’s evil scowling face, I finally gave up and got into my kids bed. They reflexively snuggled with me and snorted a little and while I never did get back to sleep, it did give me some immense relief. Warm, fuzzy-headed kids and dogs and cats are a pretty good antidote to hellish supreme court hearings. Oh, and Zanax (though I just ran out…)

@trollhattan: At the beginning of his nomination i was surprised to read that a LOT of people–some on our side– seemed to think Kavanaugh was at least someone of substance and character who’d be a fair yet conservative judge. I don’t know how many people would have even bothered to look further had the Dems not screamed from the rooftops about his missing work product, failure to talk about his work with Ken Starr, his involvement in hacked emails he apparently lied about in his previous confirmation. That stuff didn’t fully come out until a week or so ago. Brett has been conning people for quite a while, and he got a lot of help from the pro’s doing it for this nomination.

I would really like to corner GWB at a fundraiser and ask him how he feels now–actually, how his wife and daughters feel– after what’s transpired in the last 24 hours. Just to watch him squirm.

After Thursday, a lot of otherwise marginal Republican voters will be motivated by the Kavanaugh travesty and the Democrats’ disgusting tactics. There is nothing that Republicans could have done that would have motivated their voters as much as what the Democrats have done by their attempt to destroy Kavanaugh.

Democrats’ relationship with the rule of law has reached an unprecedented place. And in addition to what we witnessed during the Kavanaugh confirmation, it is worth remembering that the Democrats are the party that enthusiastically backs making it easier for felons to vote and for illegal immigrants to be granted amnesty in large part because they think it would help them win elections. Now they want a confirmation process, designed specifically for Republicans, in which nothing more than an allegation is sufficient to stop their political opponents from holding office. The Democrats still don’t have a message on the economy or foreign policy. The only thing they can claim to be theirs is a growing but vague flirtation with socialism and the support of the so-called resistance, which has disintegrated into cowardly protests and attempts at personal destruction.

Btw Alexandra Petri just posted a gem – not a funny gem, her other kind of gem. It Is Very Difficult To Get the Train To Stop

We are going to destroy these folks in November – we are coming for you, GOP

…In the Bible, Thomas says he will not believe what Jesus has survived unless he can stick his hand into the wounds. But this is not a reasonable thing to ask of someone who is not God, to stick your hand into their wound. I am tired of watching people become wounds. Half the Internet is a wound. Have you stuck your hand in it enough? Do you believe yet? The #MeToo movement lurches forward over a path of scars. The change is so slow and the sacrifice it demands so great.

Even as she testified Thursday, Christine Blasey Ford kept apologizing. (“I’m sorry,” she said. “I can read fast!” she said. She was here to be “helpful,” she said.)

Someday I want to not be tired.
Someday I want us not to apologize.

Women are used to squinting to see our own stories in the stories of others. To reading ourselves into the words “all men are created equal.” To being the thing tied to the tracks to raise the stakes.

I am so tired of the moment when you discover how little your weight counts against the train’s.

I want us to be the train and not the thing thrown under it.
I want us to be the thing too urgent to be stopped, not the thing that must curl up apologetically to make room for it.

Is it too much to ask to be the train sometimes? Not all the time, just sometimes.

I am so tired of watching us jump.
I am so tired of watching the trains keep going.

I found yesterday so discouraging because after Ford’s testimony the consensus was that Kavanaugh was toast. But then he comes out and shouts and pounds the table while furiously proclaiming his innocence and suddenly the narrative is “he turned it around”. Uh, news flash guys – guilty people do that too!

    @trollhattan:
A periodic reminder of just how awful W was as a president and a person. The only reasons he gets such a pass compared to Trump:

    1) We’ve had the whole of the Obama years to forget how awful he was. He helped by staying in the background during that time.

    2) He grew up in a political family, so he learned from an early age to act the way people expect a politician to act.

It’s amazing how important 2) is. Part of the reason people react so strongly to Trump is because he doesn’t act “presidential”. That failure of presentation alerts people to all the other awful stuff he’s doing. Since Bush knew how people expected the president to act, he could get away with a huge amount more; people just couldn’t believe somebody who acted so presidential could be as awful as he was at the actual job of being president.

The last cat that we had spayed had the kind of stitches that work their way out by themselves and for a couple of weeks she looked like she had a row of belly rings until they finally fell off one by one.

That surgical glue is great stuff. When my dad had open heart surgery to have a valve replaced, they used glue to close up his incision. Four months later, he had no scar other then a very fine white line down the center of his chest that you could hardly see.
