We hit our goal in the Forty House Seats To Freedom. I’ll raise 20K for the next 20 candidates anyone wants to name in the comments. I’ll re-up this tomorrow to give everyone a chance to name candidates.
By the way, we’re on track to raise 250K this cycle. That’s two-and-a-half times the max we’ve ever done in a cycle before and that previous max was a presidential year, not a midterm. I’m blown away by how much you guys are giving. Thanks!
Here’s who we had for the first forty — I’ll take ANY Dem candidate who wasn’t on this initial list.

Jackals are inspiringly awesome. I’m in again. It’s all of us against all of them!
Ken Pedersen
Ben McAdams (UT-CD4). McAdams is the best Democrat in the state – we call him Mormon Frank Underwood. He just does not make mistakes. His opponent, Mia Love, keeps getting bogged down in corruption and ethics scandals, and she’s just never been particularly strong. She really only got her seat because of gerrymandering. CD4 is the most winnable in the state and Ben has been within 3-4 points for months.
frosty
George Scott, PA10, Red to Blue candidate, running to defeat Freedom Caucus Scott Perry
Jess King, PA11, running in my new district, formerly part of Perry’s. Long shot but great candidate. I’ll be knocking doors for her every weekend until election day.

Jeramey Anderson (MS-4)
Felanius Kootea
Thank you for doing this; I’m glad Andrew Janz benefitted. Anything to get rid of that odious Devin Nunes.

Definitely Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02), she’s in a red corner of a largely blue state, fighting hard. We need her voice.

Tedra Cobb NY-21

We donated and she mailed us a personalized thank you card. She can use all the help she can get. A bunch of nasty attack ads are running against her.
Her opponent (Karl Rove protegé) worked on legislation to privatize social security.

Traci Mitrano is running in NY 23 against Tom Reed

Tom Reed has been trying to astro-turf himself as some bipartisan compromiser. It is sickening.

I’ve mentioned this before, Senator Tammy Baldwin, WI. I get panicked emails every day.

Don’t know what the DSCC is doing, when they call I tell them I’m sending all my $$ to Tammy.

Please consider adding Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-7) to the list.
I’ve met her a couple of times and was very impressed. She was my preferred candidate in the primary, and the primary runoff.

Second vote for Ben McAdams. He can push the odious Mia Love out of Congress, with enough help. He’s not a perfect Dem but he’s as good as we can get in Utah…and I think he’ll be great on public lands issues.

Nate McMurray NY-27
Nate is running against Trump’s first endorser, Chris Collins – Recently arrested on insider trading and now actively seeking re-election, because he can’t get his name off the ballot.

@pat: I donated to her today – thanks for the heads-up!
I also just made my 3rd donation to Beto and a thank-you donation to Joe Donnelly…and I donated to some of the women on the 40 list. I’m officially tapped out right now – I wish I could give more.

@pat: electoral-vote.com has Baldwin as “strongly democrat” and fivethirtyeight.com has her as “solid D”. I don’t think you need to worry.

Jahana Hayes, CT-5. First time politician (former teacher of the year)
evap
@SiubhanDuinne: I second Bourdeaux. A colleague of mine, who is very in touch with GA politics, mentioned this race and says that this year it is actually winnable (unlike previous years). Bourdeaux is flying a bit under the radar, but might just pull it off. I was planning to donate a bit of money to her.

Maybe Carolyn Long, WA-3. Southwest Washington state is pretty red, but I guess she’s managed to generate some enthusiasm, and in cold tactical terms her apparatchik opponent Jaime Herrera Beutler is also a woman, which at least eliminates the sexism obstacle.

I think the Kos folks supported Lucy early, and knocked out other candidates who might have run a stronger campaign.

Greg Stanton in AZ-09. He was a pretty damn good mayor of PHX, and is running for his first congressional term in the swingiest of districts. He would take the seat currently held by Kyrsten Sinema, who is running for Senate against Martha McSally for Jeff Flake’s seat. Dems struggle statewide here, but I like having a Dem congresscritter. Fingers crossed.
khead
@khead:
Comment #18. Heh. I have a very good friend that I would love to see represent (WV-3) someday. He’s still only in his 50’s so he may get there yet, but Ojeda absolutely jumped ahead of him this year and probably has the inside track to challenging Manchin down the road – if Ojeda can win this year.
Also, I’d really like an edit function.

@Geoduck:
I second Carolyn Long in WA-3rd. This is a big district that includes the Portland suburb of Vancouver WA which is blue to purple and a lot of outlying red rural areas. The incumbent is Jamie Herrera Beutler who is a typical GOP hack and a reliable Trump vote like the rest of them. This district normally leans pretty red but this may be the year to take it back. Clark County split almost exactly 50/50 between Clinton and Trump and that is perhaps 75% of the district. The outlying rural counties are more red but have far fewer people. And they weren’t always red, it was once union country.
Recent polls have it neck and neck. I’ll be out volunteering for Carolyn as this is my district: https://www.electlong.com/
opiejeanne
Please consider Lisa Brown, D WA 05 against the awful Cathy McMorris Rodgers. They’re nearly neck and neck.
I’d like to second Carolyn Long for assistance.
Glad to see Dr Kim Schrier benefitted.

@khead: Why not have Ojeda dislodge Capito? Granted that would have to wait until 2022 (I think) but he’d be great at it.

Mallory Hagan AL-3. I’ve given to her. Deep red territory. Make em work for it.
Dan B
Lisa Brown. WA 5. Is a great candidate running against the horrible Cathy McMorris Rogers. It’s a tight race in mostly red Eastern WA. Lisa has been a progressive leader in the state Senate. She was one of the first to support LGBTQ rights when it was risky. She’s been chancellor of the biggest public University in the eastern half of the state. She’s brought into the 21st century and pulled off some great feats like creating a first class medical school. It would be great to knock one of the mist senior GOP women off her perch.

Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02). She’s a wonderful person, a wonderful candidate, a water rights lawyer, and will be a fantastic Congressperson. She has a real shot at wining this traditionally Republican district, which sent the odious Steve Pearce to Congress for the last eight years. Her Republican opponent: 1) “forgot” to list on her financial half a million dollars in revenue her real estate company got from the New Mexico state government, and 2) had to get a replacement campaign manager becuase the original guy fled the state to avoid arrest on charges of domestic assault and…wait for it…sexual slavery.

So midnight is the end of quarter donation deadline for contributions to be reported out to the FEC. The Act-Blue donation meter is going crazy. I timed donations for 10 minutes at over $21K/minute. That is ridiculous and donations today will definitely shatter Friday’s $11M record for one day.
In case this appeals to anyone else, I made end of quarter donations to all the candidates that sent me thank you postcards/letters for my first contribution–12 candidates total spread out over both state house candidates & red to blue folks.
Hope everyone has a pleasant Sunday night!
Yutsano
@Dan B: So I happen to live in part of the radio market that covers WA-5. I’ve heard both Lisa Brown and Cathy McMorris-Rodgers ads. Cathy is running scared. If Lisa gets Spokane, Pullman, and Walla Walla, then the district will be hers.

I have been making calls and knocking on doors every weekend since May for Julie Oliver in Texas House District 25. Her video, released just this week, tells her story far better than I can. Let’s just say that in a district drawn to be largely rural with just a sliver in Austin (so they could split up our community of interest into 5 districts), Julie’s story of growing up poor in rural Texas as a 17 year old Medicaid mom has really drawn interest. https://www.oliver2018.com/video
H.E.Wolf
Because my volunteer job is to match other volunteers with their local districts, I’ve been getting a fabulous close-up view of what’s going on.
The 3 House races in WA State which have good chances of flipping to Democratic are drawing hundreds of volunteers each:
WA-08, for Kim Schrier (included in the first 40)
WA-03, for Carolyn Long
WA-05, for Lisa Brown
If they all win, WA State will have a 10-person delegation that is evenly split, male-female… and only 1 of those 10 will be a Republican (Dan Newhouse, WA-04).
WA-04 is so red, right now, that Carolyn Brown, the Democratic woman running in that district is a very, very long shot. But there are hundreds of volunteers there, too – Yakima and the Tri-Cities are EN FUEGO – so maybe the Republicans will have to spend money to keep her from winning.

Although it is probably too much of a long shot to put any serious money into, I’d like people to be aware of Talley Sergent in WV-2. 538 only gives her a little better than 5% chance of beating the idiot Freedom Caucus member Alex Mooney, although the data is very sparse. For me it is a two-fer. The incumbent in the Maryland Senate I am volunteering for is Michael Hough, who insiders have said is the Ted Cruz of the MD Senate, ie the one everyone hates. Since the MD legislature is only in session for three months most members have other jobs and ole hating Hough has taken a job as Mooney’s chief of staff. It would be very sweet to knock him out of two jobs in November.

Consider Jared Golden, not perfect but many good positions, race against stealth moneyweasel Bruce Polliquen in ME 2nd is close. (NYT poll 2 wks ago: Golden was 4.9% behind). Because of ranked choice voting, Golden could also win in a ranked run off. (Poliquen is under 50%; 2 independents running.)
Golden joined the Marines after 9/11, is state rep for an area that went to Poliquin but used to go to Dem Labor. He has a lot of labor support. Is anti-Citizens United.
Poliquin made millions on Wall St, wants further dereg, was part of tax theft and is anti ACA. Big money is coming from R Pacs because it may be close. Your basic Tr -Koch supporter but quiet about it. Also he’s despicable.
I have no handle on relative importance nationally of this vs other races. But rw Rs think it’s important; they set Poliquin up here to begin with and turned the district. Maybe to do with land use/resource/envir deregulation.

I don’t want to have to find out a candidate’s beliefs by what Wikipedia says their party is. I want it to be obvious. I guess if I lived in WV I would probably end up voting for him, but ugh!

Your vote is enormously valuable in the 4th CD! Thank you!!

Kevin Yoder’s entire campaign message is « the scary brown people are coming to get you » His first attempt was to say that Sharice doesn’t understand Kansas values. When it was pointed out to him that her people have been here for about 5000 years, he dropped that line. His entire campaign is scare tactics and lies.
She was a White House intern under Obama, took 8 years to get through college because she worked full time the whole time, and went to Cornell Law School. And she’s gay, though she doesn’t highlight that.
Her primary day picture was with her single mom. « Of course my mom was there, because Mom has always been there. I’m not crying, you’re crying. »
There are good people out there, people! Let’s get them in!

Well, the first reason is that Evan Jenkins won WV-3 (68-44) and the district was +50 for Trump (73-23) in the last election – but the last poll had Ojeda up 5 points over Miller. If you need a more idealistic reason, he was solidly on the side of the WV teachers (and also the Verizon workers in WV) during their strike. I don’t want him as Speaker of the House, but I am pretty cool with him as a back bencher in a very solid Democratic majority. He’s definitely bullying, but I am not sure where you are getting the misogyny and classist vibes.

I like, admire, and trust the Jackals to whom I responded. Just felt the need, again, to point out how very off-putting I find Ojeda’s communications so far.
opiejeanne
@SiubhanDuinne: I get it, totally. He really comes across as a mad dog, and the snarling about her being a millionaire was off-putting, but I will say this: he may be what will appeal to usually R voters in WV. I would think his tone would have them very excited. (Oh, look, a Real Man!)
SiubhanDuinne
@khead:
His female opponent was “born in the swamp.” “Cut the bull, Carol.”
Bear in mind I know nothing about either candidate. You say he was “solidly on the side of the WV teachers (and also the Verizon workers in WV) during their strike.” Great. Yes, I see what you’re saying. But the context here is to persuade us to donate money to candidates, and as I am not a macho-loving WV voter I have not seen anything from Ojeda that would prompt me to give him a dime.
I guess I wish Adam or khead or someone would have provided in their comments some of the things that make Ojeda an attractive candidate, that’s all.
chris

Uh, “the swamp” has come to mean, in these Trumpian times, the established functioning government, the civil service. I know what “cut the bull” means, thank you very much for the mansplain, and absent context it comes across as an angry macho dude yelling at a woman.
Look, if he’s someone you and others want to support, that’s fine with me. I just think his ad and his tweet suck donkey balls. He would have had me in the first few seconds if he had talked about, say, his support for WV teachers instead of meeping on and on about the tattoos on his back.

I appreciate that you provided those links, but my point all along has been that Ojeda failed to provide even a scoche of information that would make me think “Hmm, interesting, tell me more.” In fact, to the contrary, everything he provided made me think “Yuck, ugh, not going there.”
Fuck it. Vote for him, give him money. I’m going to bed.
Aleta
@SiubhanDuinne:
He’s described as “A gun-loving, pro-life, pro-coal Trump voter who once promised to “fistfight” Barack Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency” in Mother Jones in May. He voted for Bernie in the primary, then Trump instead of Hillary in the general. Not a committed Democrat, since Trump’s racism and misogyny and anti-Obama, anti-immigrant speeches were very clear. Misogyny or racism are automatic no votes for me.
I notice the style of the ad is similar to ads for the Republicans who run as (pretend, in their case) military-style conquerers of a dysfunctional Congress.. They’ll straighten it out fast because they’re tough and know how to make things move. So the ad could be because of who he hired. False macho confidence isn’t a promise of anything though.

He also started and ran a non-profit for community development and improvement in the town he lives in in WVA. And he was physically assaulted at a campaign event in 2016.
He’s playing to his strengths here: career military service, tough guy veteran, no nonsense plainspoken small town boy makes good.

@khead:
….I’ve barely interacted with you, aside from this and one other time recently. Are you confusing me with someone else?

@SiubhanDuinne:
Tell me more.

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??:
Well, here’s the thing. I have a long memory. I’m pretty sure we probably got off on the wrong foot long ago when you got “offended” – and told me about it – back in a thread where I said that the United States hasn’t really done shit for the world since WWII that hasn’t bee in it’s own interests. I mean, really? Grab a book.
Then, in the last week you demanded to know why I haven’t taken action against people on FB in a situation that you know shit about. In two threads.
In addition, you got on my ass about my comments to PenAndKey because you couldn’t recognize the dude was going all #notallmen.
And finally we have tonight.
So, yeah. I’m pretty cool with asking you to quit fucking yapping at my heels like a chihuahua. You are like an annoying child.

@Where’s my hammer: As an Olympia-area resident, one of my happier days in recent years was when the redistricting went through and we no longer had to suffer Ms. Buetler as our rep. Did make it that much harder for those left behind to get rid of her totally, but I’m pulling for you all and Ms. Long.

@Walker: Well, the polling at FiveThirtyEight has Bordeaux down by just over 3 against her R opponent. Perhaps Real Clear Politics polling canbe trusted, but I’ve always found that they lean Republican, and not so gently either.

@khead:
I wasn’t demanding. I was just curious.
Alright, fine. I regret that one. Sue me. But this was several months ago.
Nobody else in that thread seemed to see it that way. I remember you were being as asshole in your criticism though.
Whatever, dude

Asking just once is curious. Also, you might want to check how that PenAndKey thread ended. I’ll leave it at that.
??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??
@khead:
So I asked twice, so what? I dropped it afterwards. And as for the PenandKey thing, I’ll take your word for it. I don’t have the time to look at it.
I do apologize if I’ve come across as annoying to you. That was never my intention. Hope to see you around these parts.

@chris:
Ojeda did learn leadership the Airborne way as he worked his way up from recruit to Major of Airborne troops serving in the stans, so kind of “You WILL vote this November, See that you DO!” but I think he wants to work for the people of the district, which is extremely impoverished. He seems honest and straight forward. When he retired from the Army he became a school teacher, so he has good instincts about how to help most immediately.
When I left the Navy I never expected to be trying to help vets get elected to anything 40 years later!!!

Liz Watson, IN-09. A worthy progressive candidate running against a rich kid whose family sent him up from Tennessee and bought the seat for for the GOP two years ago. She deserves and needs the support.
Scott
I’ve been sending some money to Joseph Kopser (TX-21) who’s running against Chip Roy, a hard right apparatchik. He a former Chief of Staff to Ted Cruz which says it all. Known for staying on state health care plan beyond his state employment quitting date and yet wants to cut healthcare for everyone. Kopser is a tech entrepreneur, West Point grad, Army Iraq war veteran etc.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Danny O’Connor in OH-12! Young, progressive, came within a hair of winning the district in the August special election. Now he has a rematch Nov. 6 with Trump loving Troy Balderson. 538 rates the race a tossup in formerly solidly red gerrymandered district.
Miss Bianca
Very late to the party, but first wanted to say, Thank you Doug! Money has been tight but I think I’m finally turning the corner where I can begin to donate (better late than never). Also, if you’re not up to 20 yet, Diane Mitsch Bush, CO-D (3). This seat was held by a Democrat prior to 2010, she’s a solid candidate, and her opponent is the slimy Scott Tipton.

Mary Barzee-Flores FL-25
She was an excellent state court judge. Obama nominated her to the federal bench but Rubio blocked her.
Supports health care, gun laws, right to choose
Emily’s List and Moms Demand support her
She is in the DCCC red to blue program
538 says she could win in a blue wave

George Scott PA-10 running against Scott Perry, Freedom Caucus member and would be impeacher of Rosenstein. Last poll has Scott within 4 points. Thank yo PA Supreme Court

Thank you for including Vangie Williams in the VA1st. She’s a career civil service worker who handles govt retirement accounts in a district where many of them go to retire.

Alan LaPolice – KS1
In the last election in this district the odious Tim Huelskamp lost a primary to someone who looked to be an improvement, Roger Marshall. Looks can be deceiving; he’s just as wretched, he’s got his lips firmly glued to Trump’s ass, and he thinks that he will sail through this election in a very red district. But he failed to deliver on the Farm Bill, he has failed to show up at events in his district, and he has a solid challenger in LaPolice. Alan is a veteran, an educator, and a tireless advocate against the gridlock that is killing our country. A few dollars could make a huge difference in this campaign, and it would send a real message to the GOP if they lost this district AND a couple of other districts in KS.
