Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Let me file that under fuck it.

In my day, never was longer.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

The FBI Kavanaugh “investigation” was a sham. Time to get angrier than a Yalie after a UB40 show.

Give here to the Balloon Juice More More More Fund, split equally among 46 Democratic candidates suggested by the readers. Nearly all the races are 2nd or third tier. You can give to just a few candidates if you want to avoid too many mailing lists.

Goal Thermometer

Here’s what the wise Dave Wasserman has to say:

This is precisely what happened to ‘17 VA Dems, who *underestimated* the wave and failed to adequately fund a bunch of 2nd-tier Dems who fell just short while many of the best-funded won by a mile.

I’m going to vote. And btw, can we have a post outlining the dates of early voting, registration deadlines, and so forth? One way to help campaigns is getting a big early vote to bank votes. Banking votes whenever possible frees up campaigns to focus on harder to get voters and shortens lines on Election Day Proper.

So don’t just get mad, also get even.

I woke up angry. But about something specific.

The message is starting to percolate through the left blogosphere that Republicans are having a bounce in fundraising and voter enthusiasm caused by the Kavanaugh debacle. The DCCC in particular has been trumpeting that message, not quoting any numbers but quoting as a reliable source… the GOP. Uh-huh.

And our blog host posted last night about being in despair that we’re losing all of our momentum on everything: Kavanaugh, fund-raising, voter turnout, the works. I’ve been getting anxious myself and telling myself not to worry because worry is pointless, just keep sending the money to the campaigns.

So this morning I woke up mad. Apparently my subconscious was chewing on this overnight, as it often does. “Goddamnit, Conscious Mind,” it said, “this is Putin’s Propaganda Puppies again. They’re softening Democratic expectations so we won’t be too surprised when the counts are all out of whack with the exit polls. We’re being played. You’ve been played. Stop it, you moron.”

Fight back. Argue against this crap. Let’s not be played again, OK?

Edit to add: OMG, there’s an edit button. (Breaks down weeping and mumbling incoherently)

It feels weird that I’ve had a much better opinion of men, rich people, white people & those who fit all those categories, than they had about themselves. I mean, aligning yourself with a sexual predator, not once but over & over… just amazing. You really find community with that sort of people? You don’t hold your ethics or honor in any esteem? I’ve kicked in already with my regular Act Blue donation, but I’ll check my finances to see if I can kick in more. Maybe I’ll find some new freelance work that actually pays.

In their defense, the DCCC is fighting complacency. Like all the people– from James Comey to split ticket, tote-bagger voters* in WI and PA to probably a good chunk of Stein voters– who thought it would be okay to “send a message” in 2016 because Clinton had it in the bag.

As someone borne and raised in Wisconsin I’m sure there’s some of that here, but I’ve been convinced ever since Walker’s election in 2010 that the WI voting process is either corrupt as hell, sabotaged, or otherwise being manipulated by the GOP. I refuse to believe that the GOP can manage to pull out as many last minute “late vote count total” upsets as they’ve done since then by innocent chance.

I’m combing through FEC fundraising reports (most are through June 30) to look for the kind of underfunded races Wasserman mentions.

I’m cross referencing this with ratings of the races at Cook Political. Is there any way I can get this to Doug directly or would it be useful?

There are an awful lot of races where, even at the end of June, where the Democrat had loads of money. But there are some, like AZ 6 and GA 6 where the D is woefully under funded.

Yup, I’m pissed. After getting my estimate for a new water pump (EGADS!) and new timing/serpentine belt (because, well, if you are that far in to the engine, you might as well), I’ll give what I can.

What gets me, and I’m absolutely, positively not advocating violence for the current situation, not even close, but the Leaders of the Right seem to like to play footsie around “Second Amendment Solutions” when they are pissed off. They seem to forget the Left can cause grief, too (not necessarily with guns; I’m thinking massive protests). Too much more of this bullshit (Russia, Electoral College, Garland, Kavenaugh, etc.) and … I’m just sayin…

ETA: I can edit! Hell, the Willow finally gave it up. Huzzah! Just to add, given my connection to Tulare, I volunteered for Janz last night. We’ll see when they get back to me and when I can get there (see car issue above).

Last night I hosted a meet and greet/ fund raiser attended by about 100 Democrats.

I noted a lot of energy among those attending. In particular, the women seemed to be extraordinarily motivated to work towards victory this November.

Given they were swilling my booze, later in the evening, I shared some of my controversial views with the attendees. They received mixed reviews.

    Fuck. All. Of. Them.

I’m in my mid 30s myself. My first political memory? The Starr investigation and the GOP trying to impeach a president over a blowjob. My first electoral experience? Missing the Bush v Gore election by days and watching Junior’s brother steal the electoral college. Then 9/11 happened and we got the patriot act, pointless wars without end, and an economic collapse that basically stole my generation’s most important career years. We’re a lost generation and I place the blame squarely on them.

As far as I’m concerned the GOP may have been different in the past, but I couldn’t give a flying fuck. My entire political life they’ve been corrupt and crazy, and if they’re marginally worse now than they were before it’s not enough to make me see their past any better.

When Special K gets onto the court, the Rs will lose their enthusiasm and the Ds will gain more, so there’s that. But whatever advantage we gain won’t last long because of the SCOTUS and media bothsiderism.

They’ll wait until after the midterms to overturn Roe, but they’ll get the fix in on Mueller and re-institute Jim Crow ASAP.

According to my Twitter feed the media is accepting the sham FBI report (I can’t watch). Well, we’ve known they’re completely compromised for a long time (butter emails!). They will also accept the new SCOTUS rulings with only a little “concern.”

I think our only real chance is a Maidan movement, but because I drive for Lyft sometimes I intend to take folks to the polls—Lyft is paying (or so they say). It’s something, at least.

“A republic if you can keep it.” Well, it lasted more than 200 years. Next one won’t have an electoral college.

    Then 9/11 happened…

I’m not saying it was a conspiracy or anything of that nature, but Bush was a one termer before 9/11. Trump is a surefire one termer right now, too.

Something really big is coming. I keep hoping it’s just Mueller but … maybe Mueller will be the trigger for it, whatever it is… obviously I have no idea other than a strange feeling in my gut. Maybe it was the alcohol last night crying over my car (actually, I got really, REALLY lucky in how that played out).

@The Dangerman: immediately prior to 9/11 they were saber rattling hard for a conflict with China (downed spy plane anyone?). It’s all they know.

In my lifetime we’ve gone from Venturestar to “Shock and Awe” to collapsing bridges and immigrant internment camps.

Today I will also finally finish writing my 1000th GotV postcard (my goal since late August) for my local Indivisible group’s GOtV Postcard Campaign.

I wholeheartedly endorse the be furious about what is happening & channel that fury into productive activities POV. I encourage everyone here who is able to do as much of the following as is possible: take Nov. 6th off, take Nov. 5th off, and take the last weekend beforehand off as well call up your local D candidate or campaign office & make yourself available to do GOtV & help out at the polls.

    @wpenhall:

Campaigns may not accept or solicit contributions from federal government contractors. A federal government contractor is a person who enters into a contract, or is bidding on such a contract, with any agency or department of the United States government and is paid, or is to be paid, for services, material, equipment, supplies, land or buildings with funds appropriated by Congress. Since corporate contributions are already prohibited, the government contractor ban applies primarily to contributions from a partnership (or a limited liability company) with a government contract. It also applies to the personal and business funds of:

Individuals under contract to the federal government; and

Sole proprietors of businesses with federal contracts.

The spouses of individuals and sole proprietors who are federal government contractors and employees of federal government contractors, however, may make contributions from personal funds.

I think the idea here is to keep elected officials from sending work to contractors who will then kick back some of the money to those folks campaigns.

My suggestion is to find local or statewide candidates to give to (I dunno where you are or I’d make a suggestion or two) or if you are married to do it through your spouse.
