Too many chores and slow Alain = today’s post will be tomorrow and I ran Friday’s post today. Enjoy!
Have a wonderful day !
Today, pictures from valued commenter Albatrossity.
On my way back from California, I spent a couple of days at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I’ve been to the more accessible South Rim a number of times, but not the North, and I took this opportunity to knock that one off the bucket list

I went to Point Imperial, the highest point in the park (8800 ft or 2700 m) to collect the dawn. Here’s one of the formations at that site, in early light

Another lookout site on the North Rim is at Cape Royal. This is one of the formations there, and you can see the river (about 7 miles away as the raven flies) through the opening.

North Rim of the Grand Canyon
I saw lots of smoke on my trip west and back, and several places where the fire was obviously still active. This is the east flank of the Kaibab Plateau, where the Grand Canyon begins

At dawn the smoke from the fire shown in the previous image was obvious. This is from Point Imperial, looking south toward the much lower South Rim of the canyon
Thank you so much Albatrossity, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Nice pics, I’ve been looking at the north rim as a possible Milky Way location(it’s really, really dark there).

I particularly like that first shot because of the deep contrast! Thanks, the North rim is on my list too

The pictures are all amazing, and thanks for submitting them.

Grand Canyon is the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

Stunning photos! I’ve been to the South Rim, but definitely need to add the North Rim to my list now. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice. No matter how much you have seen, there is always more worth seeing. Reminds me that I need to submit the pictures I have of the south rim after a foot of snow.

Amazing photos!

Lovely photos and the sunlight perfect. If you have not been to Caprock State Park and Trailways in Texas it is worth a stop. The lower end of Palo Dura Canyon. The Trailways used to be railway. The closest town is Quitaque and a scenic drive up the Caprock is Silverton. The motor bike riders love to ride there.

Can all five be my favorite?

The Grand Canyon is so beautiful ? ?.
Those are amazing pictures.
Albatrossity
@waratah: Yes, Caprock and Palo Duro are wonderful as well. We’ve been there a few times times, one time camping in Palo Duro, and the last time staying in the historic Turkey Hotel in Turkey TX. That hotel is wonderful, and if you have not stayed there (or eaten lunch there) you should definitely put it on your list!

All great pictures, but the first one is special. It sends a shiver down my spine.

@Schlemazel: I have to agree, that first picture is stunning. I also like the detail on the formation through which we see the river. Thanks for sharing. This confirmsmy need to go to the North Rim. We go to the South Rim today!

These are wonderful. I’ve never been to the North Rim and now it’s definitely on my list

Beautiful!

Stunning!
A cousin and I escorted my 88yo mother on an Amtrak trip from Chicago to the Grand Canyon this past May. None of us had been, and we all found it just unbelievable at every turn. I now want to go back with my husband to the south rim and then drive to the north rim. Your pictures confirm my desire. Thanks!

I think the quality of the pictures is mostly from the Dawn Light Albatrossity took advantage of. Early Dawn Light and Evening Golden Hour light are a different quality than most light.
Of course having that Grand Canyon view helps too. Like having a Mona Lisa level model…
Thanks for sharing with us poor jackals!!!
Albatrossity
@J R in WV: Yes, the light makes all the difference. I was not the only person who had the idea to get to Point Imperial at dawn; there was a small crowd of 8-10 other photographers there as well. And it was a fair drive from anywhere you could stay overnight, so we all got up pretty early that morning.
I was a little worried that the smoky atmosphere would be a problem, but it was not too smoky, and it added a bit of color as well.
Thanks!

Gorgeous pictures. I’ve only been once, to the South rim. There was a condor flying directly overhead at Bright Angel Lodge. They nest in a formation not far away. A ranger said that when a scientist rappelled down into the nest, he found remains of condors that were dated to 10,000 years ago. So when condors were reintroduced in to the Canyon, they nested in the same place their ancestors had.
