Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

People are weird.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Susan Collins thinks her supporters are suckers.

We don’t.

Let’s make 2020 as unpleasant as possible for her.

CrowdPAC has been fundraising to support a general election challenger with almost $2 million dollars in pledges being held contingent on the Kavanaugh vote. Let’s go.

And also the core organizing principal should be that “these go to 11” in a world where “51 and Fuck you” is the most recent precedent:

    I just put in $200. I live in California, but I used to live in Maine. I am seriously considering moving back just so I can vote against her if she has the nerve to run again in 2020.

    How long is the residency requirement before you can vote in Maine? Because I can get a rental there for long enough to register and vote against her, and I’m seriously considering it.
    There’s gotta be a place that rents to pet owners.

    Let’s make 2020 as unpleasant as possible for her.

    I’m interested in contributing to a fund that makes every day miserable for her between now and 2020. Anything like that started yet?

    I just donated $20.20 to Collins’ future opponent. I wish it could be 20 million.

    If it weren’t for Balloon Juice, the knowledge and the snark and the animals, I would have a much harder time wanting to stay in touch with reality.

    I’ve got yard signs for Andrew Gillum and Chris Hunter (candidate for Congress) and am volunteering for Hunter’s campaign. So grateful for the people who are doing way more than that.

    @satby: How is voting residence determined?

    From UMO info for students about establishing residency in Maine:

    What are the requirements to register to vote in Maine?
    Residence is that place where the person has established a fixed and principal home to which the person, whenever temporarily absent, intends to return. Under this definition, residence is something that a person establishes, not something a person chooses.
    …
    The law does not define “fixed” or “principal” or “home”.

    In most cases, a person has only one place where he or she resides, making residency an easy factor for the registrar to determine. However, determining residency becomes more difficult when a person owns or rents a dwelling in more than one municipality.

    The registrar may consider the following factors (as set forth in section 112) in determining whether a person has established and maintains a voting residence in the municipality:
    A direct statement of intention by the person pursuant to section 121.1 (an “oath”);
    The location of any dwelling currently occupied by the person;
    The place where any motor vehicle owned by the person is registered;
    The residence address, not a post office box, shown on a current income tax return;
    The residence address, not a post office box, where the person receives mail;
    The residence address, not a post office box, shown on any motor vehicle operator’s license the person holds;
    The receipt of any public benefit conditioned upon residency, defined substantially as provided in this subsection; or
    Any other objective facts tending to indicate a person’s place of residence.

    OT – I got to meet and talk to Brian Karem today. Super nice guy. Basically, I was doing a divorce mediation on behalf of an elderly man on a second, long term marriage (he had been a widower) – Brian was there to support his mother on the opposite side of the case. We got it settled and I got to meet a journalist who actually confronted Sanders and Trump from the beginning.

    He had some neat stories, and as it turns out, he and I are distantly related (Louisville’s pre-Great War Lebanese all tended to come from a specific set of villages).

    Yglesias: Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation will delegitimize the Supreme Court — and that’s good

    They’ve been a far-right shitshow for years, with notably rare exceptions (and were for decades before Earl Warren). If this gets people to notice how awful it already is, that’s a very slight silver lining.

    Since her speech started, the CrowdPac has gone up over $300k, and the ActBlue ME-Sen 2020 Democratic Nominee Fund has gone up over $100k. And that’s with CrowdPac being down for over an hour because the demand crashed their site.

    Let’s make sure she can never get an elected position for so much as dog-catcher ever again.
