Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

“But what about the lurkers?”

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Cole is on a roll !

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

It’s a doggy dog world.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

President Biden is doing good where he can, and getting it done.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Welp, it appears Manchin is going to be a yes on Kavanaugh. So much for hoping he was going to be a no on the final vote, even if it made no difference in the end. Why did he feel he had to vote for Kavanaugh? He had a comfortable lead. What kind of principles does Manchin have that he’s going to vote to put this dick on the Court?

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)  ??: It makes no difference to the end result. Manchin votes with the party 80% of the time and, most importantly, he is a vote for Schumer over McConnell as Majority Leader. Save your outrage.

    @Omnes Omnibus:
I understand all that and alluded to it. I just want to understand why he felt he had to vote yes. Heitkamp and Donnelly, in much tighter races, didn’t. He had nothing to lose given his large lead. He could have stood for some principles and voted no.

Nope, Matt McDermott and John G. Cole. I am not from WV and I will not STFU on this. My take on Senate confirmation votes (SCOTUS, Cabinet) and significant legislation is that Manchin and his colleagues are no longer merely representing their narrow state constituencies; rather, they are United States Senators making decisions on people and policies that will affect the entire United States for years and years, and I have the right as a United States citizen to express my views.

They’re voting on naming a new Post Office in Buckhannon? Happy to STFU.

I am not from WV and I don’t want to argue. I will simply point out the thread that John wrote here. And about his opponent here. Manchin is what we’ve got for now. Having him in the senate is better than having his opponent. It’s wasting energy to concentrate on him at this moment in time. Let’s reward the people who did vote no, and donate to D opponents of those who vote yes.

I am sick and heartsick and just can’t see the wisdom of fighting for things that won’t make a difference right now. Will I do what I can for is next primary opponent? Yes. If everyone else wants to hurl themselves bloody against a granite wall for nothing but the satisfaction of it, have at. I’m going to peace out for now and concentrate on the things I can actually change.

I gave this morning to Heitkamp and Jacky Rosen. Articles suggest the race with Heller is tight. For some reason I couldn’t access Sinema’s page, that is, I found it but it wouldn’t go to a secure donation page. I hope that is because there is so much traffic. I feel bruised, but you know, compared to so many other people, I will be personally unscathed so I am going to let others grieve as long as they want and keep soldiering on.

The article on Susan Collins in the NYT this morning was pukeworthy. She lives in a little fairyland in her own mind and just wishes away the anger of her constituents. She doesn’t know what it means to have non-negotiable principles and just can can’t understand why everyone has to be so mean about these things. I can’t decide whose demise I would welcome more, hers or Grassley’s. As for Manchin, I firmly believe he and Collins decided to vote the same way weeks ago.

I agree. In no way did I suggest supporting his opponent. But earlier in the week I called his office, and the offices of several other Senators I thought might be swayable. It worked for a couple (Heitkamp, Murkowski). It didn’t work for Manchin, Collins, or Flake.

WTF is up with Manchin following Collins anyway? Isn’t it kind of strange that he’s outsourced his vote to a Republican from Maine? Yet people just shrug and accept that rationale. Had it been the other way around, the Beltway press would hint that Collins is such a weak female she has to yoke her vote to a gun totin’ he-man, poor little dear.

@pamelabrown53: I think revealed Collins as a typical Republican in another way: She doesn’t actually care about abortion, it’s just that her political calculation makes her act as a mirror image of the phony “pro-lifers” in her party. She’s as ‘pro-choice’ as Willard is ‘pro-life’. In my lifetime, I think the only GOP presidential candidate who actually cared about abortion was Dumbya. McCain and Dole were pretty consistent votes for the bible thumpers, but that I suspect was only out of habit and partisan loyalty. It’s mostly just boob bait for the rubes to advance the big money agenda.

On the plus side, it sounds like Lisa “Tower of Power” Murkowski will be voting “Present,” not “Nay.” That may change, of course, but that it’s even “a thing” is annoying.

They are what we have always said they are. And the idea that the Rethugs attend to the wishes of their electorate will, I hope, die pretty fucking soon now. And, no, I don’t consider the donor class “the electorate,” just a tiny subset thereof.

WTF is up with Manchin following Collins anyway?

If the theory that he was only gonna vote “yes” when it was clear his vote didn’t matter is true, then this follows automatically, doesn’t it? He waited until Collins voted, b/c she -might- have changed to a No. Might.

He’s not following her. He’s waiting until she puts it in the bag.

Has anyone been able to use the post card site? I’ve gone there but the links don’t seem to be working for me.

I used the “Just Email to Start” contact form on PostcardPatriots.com yesterday morning to request addresses for Harley Rouda. I promptly got a response asking how many, and I replied “fifty.” I got the LAST forty-four addresses they had for Rouda yesterday morning, with a promise for six more as soon as the Rouda campaign gives more addresses.

I sent pictures of the forty-four postcards I mailed out earlier today to PostcardPatriots with a promise to write six more as soon as I receive the remaining six addresses. PostcardPatriots mentioned that they have 100 promised postcards for Rouda and were waiting on additional addresses from the campaign. A moment later, Rouda delivered more addresses.

So, I need to write six more postcards.

If you used the “Just Email to Start” button, give them time. They may be waiting for more addresses.

Here’s what I’m tired of (speaking of our donations). I really appreciate DougJ and others putting this together for us, and I’ve been using the links regularly. Hence I get a lot of emails from individual campaigns. The “whiny” ones are getting to me. “We’ve failed!” “Danny has lost!” All with the implication that if I don’t send them money right this minute, it’s my fault if disaster strikes. I realize I can unsubscribe from these, and I have from some–but how in the heck do these candidates think that these plaintive cries of disaster, overlaid with threats, are going to be convincing to ANYONE, not just me? I’m glad they’re not my candidates.
