Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

This really is a full service blog.

“woke” is the new caravan.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

People are complicated. Love is not.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

I was promised a recession.

The revolution will be supervised.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

We still have time to mess this up!

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Let’s finish the job.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I guess Betty doesn’t care any more.

I’m going to do nothing but sit in the chair today and nap. I’m in what could charitably be called “a mood.”

    Join the club.

Last night my all of my twitter feeds were full of people staying home and eating junk food. I took WarriorGirl to our local artisan ice cream place straight from school (I didn’t bother listening to the rambling-ass mess from Susan Collins; we knew the fix was in), and then went out to fetch burritos while HerrDoktor brought home pizza.

The next couple of days are self-care days; do laundry, eat tasty (if slightly junky) food, maybe clean up the back yard. I need my head back in a “doesn’t want to kill people” mode before going on the warpath, as it were.

I’m debating putting one of my Italian horror movies on the teevee this afternoon. Something about the combination of gore and weird moralizing in, say, Blood and Black Lace can make me feel better when I’m enraged. And I’m not a sportsball person

Watching Michigan State play Northwestern. Somewhat off topic but I cut the cable cord a month or so ago. Down to internet streaming DirecTV Now. The thing I miss most is the last channel button – anyone know if any of these streaming services offer that feature somehow? Using a Roku device.

I’m so old I can remember when there was only one such, Steve’s, in Somerville – the first I’m aware of that did what are now called “mix-ins.”

I gather they’ve been gone for quite some time.

@TaMara (HFG): I posted downstairs that I suspect Sotheby’s was in on the stunt. How many other paintings do they sell where the frame has a power cord? And how did they get the timing right?

The NBA returned to Seattle for one game, last night, a good show. Cmon Cleveland beat Houston, either way I will root for whoever wins the series against either the Red Sox or the Yankees. And one more thing will somebody beat Notre Dame and Alabama so that Golic and Wingo will shut up. (Never thought I say this I miss Mike Greenberg)

    Banksy is a genius.

I’m just profoundly sad today. Yesterday I was incandescently angry, but today I’m spent. I will rally and feel determined again, but today is a day of numbness.

The Republicans have, for the most part, held off the gloating, but I suspect that once the official vote is declared and Kavanaugh is enrobed, the galas will begin. My hope is that some of them choke on their champagne, but that’s me being a poor sport.

I have some drawings to do and should be working on my current rug hooking project, but when I feel like I do now, my creativity shrivels up and I am not productive. Here’s hoping we bounce back soon.

@Gin & Tonic: I used to live over by Steve’s… Which was next door to Bertucci’s. But when we were house-shopping, Somerville was already ‘way out of our price range.

Steve’s franchised, so Steve Herrell then started Herrell’s on Dunster in Harvard Square. Steve’s went the way of all vulture capital businesses, and Herrell’s relocated out to Northampton when Harvard Square went to quintupling the rents.

We usually go to Ranc’s (Belmont Center or Newtonville), which is the one owned by the younger brother (Joe) of the owner of Toscanini’s (Gus Rancatore). WG’s god[less]father was Gus, Joe, and Marie’s first non-family employee.

There are two closer ice cream joints; Moozy’s (former Brighams) at Belmont/Trapelo, and Celebrity Pizza & Ice Cream (Mt. Auburn near Arlington). Alas, neither of them make Hydrox ice cream / froyo, which is our go-to comfort food.

@FlyingToaster: Haven’t thought about Steve’s in years! Go-to place for me and my then-boyfriend when he was in grad school at MIT in the mid to late 70’s. Mmm, strawberry mixed into strawberry…

The only hope now requires these steps
    1) all 65 million who voted for Hillary to show up for the midterms and vote across the board for Dems (except for Manchin in WV, if there’s an independent candidate running or an open Write-In spot, PLEASE USE IT)
    2) at least a quarter of the Independent voters who went Republican in 2016 to flip to Democratic… and the rest to get stuck at home not voting for Republicans again.
    3) at least 1/3rd of the Republican voters falling into comas that keep them away from the ballots for the next 30… years.

I hope the Dems can flip 80 seats to them. that should get a 2/3rd majority. I know the Senate can’t go 2/3rd (yet) but I wanna see the Senate races all flip Blue (except for, again, Manchin who I hope loses to a write-in candidate for a local progressive who’ll vote the Dem line 99.99 percent of the damn time).

@donnah: The saner of my two Republican Senators posted this in his weekly email newsletter last evening:

On July 9, President Trump nominated Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement, and since that time, the Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Chuck Grassley, has done a remarkable job conducting the confirmation process to consider his nomination.

After reviewing the proceedings, including more than 30 hours of testimony from Judge Kavanaugh, and reviewing all witness testimony along with the rest of the record that has been presented throughout the course of Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation process, I will support his nomination.

Any judge on the nation’s highest court should be one who understands and applies the law based on the U.S. Constitution, and I have confidence that Judge Kavanaugh will fulfill these duties accordingly. I’ve based my decision on the totality of the information provided during the confirmation process. Judge Kavanaugh is a talented and experienced jurist, and I am confident he will bring a strong commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law to the Supreme Court. I look forward to voting to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to serve as associate justice on the Supreme Court.

I had previously called my Senator’s office twice in the last 2 weeks to ask him to vote No. After receiving this newsletter I went to his website and sent an email from there (those are designed to deliberately demotivate constituents from weighing in.) The category I chose for my remarks was “Social Issues”, since there was nothing remotely related to Judiciary, etc. Told him that he obviously didn’t watch the same hearings I did since any objective and fair minded citizen would not say that Grassley did a wonderful job.

Really, it’s not only that we are a divided country, one side has lost, truly, the ability to differentiate between truth and not-truth. It’s like Kay said in a thread last evening the whole GOP enables and promotes liars.

Cal has a night game, so today will be mostly focused on self-care, and going to the meet-up with the local “What Would Virginia Woolf Do?” group — part of Facebook group for women over 40 with a literary/intellectual bent. BJ and WWVWD have been my two lifelines to getting through the past couple weeks.

Sadly, I think they do still know the difference between truth and lies, but they are willing time and again to choose to twist the truth and use the lies for their gain. What I keep reminding people is that the Trump Republican Party knows that what they’re doing is wrong, even illegal. If the Democrats tried to do what they have done, the Republicans would be enraged beyond fury. But they are getting what they’ve wanted for many years, they can continue to get more, and they only see what they stand to gain, regardless of the cost.

Trampling rhe poor? Setting Women’s Rights back fifty years? Ruining international relations? Cutting taxes for the rich at the cost of the middle class? Making fun of disabled, mocking rape victims? embracing Nazis? Kidnapping and imprisoning immigrant children?

Know this: The Republicans approve of these things. They want these things, and Trump has given them what they want. And they will vote him and his vermin in again in 2020.

@Sheila in nc: Exactly. There’s nothing better than local made ice-cream with your favorite stuff mixed in.

WarriorGirl lives for her Hydrox Frappe with Coffee Syrup. And she learned how to use the blender so that she can make her own.

I know when the Blogfather was up here in New England, he was wow’ed by the ice cream. Most towns have at least one place that both makes their own ice cream and does mix-ins, toppings, or frappes-on-demand. When Ben & Jerry’s pints from the grocery are your “back-up” ice cream, you know you’ve reached ice cream heaven.

It almost makes up for the weather and the traffic.

The blue field at Boise State is the most disconcerting thing in college football. That and Missouri football in general. What a cluster of a game.
