Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Let’s face it, a lot of professional Repubs are just 4Chan fascists with better social training…

Our nation’s Taylor Swift loving neo-Nazis lost the first and only girlfriend they’ll ever have when Taylor Swift went political. "It can’t be a coincidence that Brett Kavanaugh was just confirmed to the Supreme Court." Or is it Kanye? https://t.co/d7cTY5dKuy

Tears on their waifu pillows!

… Sunday night… Swift broke that political silence to endorse Phil Bredesen, the Democrat running for the U.S. Senate in her home state of Tennessee—and issue a damning indictment of his competitor, Republican Marsha Blackburn.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions,” Swift wrote on Instagram, “but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.”

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” she continued. “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”…

Swift’s endorsement provoked anger and disappointment for white supremacists on 4chan, who have created a bizarre fandom around Swift as the ideal white conservative woman. In a 4chan thread about the endorsement, 4chan posters bemoaned the loss of their pop idol, calling her “traitorous.” One user posted an image of a picture of Swift burning, while another added a meme saying the Bredesen endorsement had cost him his “last additional bit of hope.”

“It was good while it lasted, mates,” one 4chan user wrote…

Alyssa Rosenberg, at the Washington Post:

… What makes Swift’s endorsements intriguing isn’t the sense that she’s finally caught up to her celebrity peers. By the standards of Hollywood, Swift’s declaration — “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is wrong. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent” — makes her decidedly middle-of-the-road.

Rather, it was Swift’s allusion to “several events in my life and in the world in the past two years” that changed her mind about going public with her politics. Though she didn’t specify which events she was referring to, it’s entirely possible that the confluence of Swift’s civil suit against a man who groped her and the #MeToo movement provided that catalyst…

Let’s #BlameItOnBrett — see if that discourages any of his newfound ‘economically anxious’ friends.

The white genocide bunch’s crush on Swift was always absurd. Swift is on record on several interviews as having a loving fandom of Beyonce that, in her words, is ‘almost unhealthy’. And apparently they hang out together. LGBT associates have written about Swift’s empathy and embrace of, let alone tolerance for, diversity..

I’m not a big Swift fan musically, but after the QAnon level BS about Swift spread, the stories would pop up in my browser, so I took a few minutes to read up on it.

Edit: and the guy she’s supporting is no a huge liberal by any standards anyway. But he is not a Trumpist, so for the nutjobs, that is all you need to know.

You have to give Taylor Swift credit for being a better and savvier person than, say, Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan.

Strictly personal whine: I am having to go out today wearing a do-rag, which I haven’t done in 20-odd years. I was giving myself the usual short haircut, which I had neglected to do for some time. And damn if the trimming device didn’t die on me before I was halfway through. I now have an odd-looking head of very closely cropped patches mixed with uncut patches. Feh.

What made these people ever think Swift shared their views? She was a blonde country music singer, so she must be a conservative?

They believed it because they wanted to believe it. It’s not like the right has many (or ANY?) A-list celebrities. Since she was being silent about her political beliefs, that gave them an opening to decide that she was secretly on their side. 4chan apparently had thread after thread about clues that Swift was really one of them. In fact, I wonder if this weird mistaken adoption might have something to do with her going public with her beliefs now. Now they’re going on and on about her ‘betrayal’, as if she was ever with them in the first place.

It’s really kind of like political stalkerism – like the guy who peeps in a girl’s windows and knows where she works and how she likes her coffee, etc – and then finds out she’s got a boyfriend and goes all ‘how could she DO this to me?!” when the girl doesn’t even know the guy exists.

In fact, this whole thing might be preemptive damage control; maybe a publicist pointed out to her that the neo-nazis were calling her an Aryan Goddess, and she needed to get out in front of it and make clear that she’s NOT with those guys.

The more immediate threat comes from what we saw on the Republican side during and after the hearing: not just contempt for the truth, but also a rush to demonize any and all criticism. In particular, the readiness with which senior Republicans embraced crazy conspiracy theories about the opposition to Kavanaugh is a deeply scary warning about what might happen to America, not in the long run, but just a few weeks from now.

About that conspiracy theorizing: It began in the first moments of Kavanaugh’s testimony, when he attributed his problems to “a calculated and orchestrated political hit” motivated by people seeking “revenge on behalf of the Clintons.” This was a completely false, hysterical accusation, and making it should in itself have disqualified Kavanaugh for the court.

But Donald Trump quickly made it much worse, attributing protests against Kavanaugh to George Soros and declaring, falsely (and with no evidence), that the protesters were being paid.

    […]

When people on the political fringe blame shadowy forces — often, as it happens, sinister Jewish financiers — for their frustrations, you can write it off as delusional. When people who hold most of the levers of power do the same thing, their fantasizing isn’t a delusion, it’s a tool: a way to delegitimize opposition, to create excuses not just for disregarding but for punishing anyone who dares to criticize their actions.

That’s why conspiracy theories have been central to the ideology of so many authoritarian regimes, from Mussolini’s Italy to Erdogan’s Turkey. It’s why the governments of Hungary and Poland, former democracies that have become de facto one-party states, love to accuse outsiders in general and Soros in particular of stirring up opposition to their rule. Because, of course, there can’t be legitimate complaints about their actions and policies.

    […]

Well, think of what Trump and his party might do if they retain both houses of Congress in the coming election. If you aren’t terrified of where we might be in the very near future, you aren’t paying attention.

    We must prevail.

We don’t want to forget, “Justice” Kavanaugh can’t give a wash to Trump and his Trumpettes by himself. He needs 4 other “Justices” to work with him, and that may be a surprise to him, not being followed by judges who think they are actually really judges.

Scalia is dead and gone, and would have worked with “Justice” Kavanaugh. I’m not sure about all four of the other current RWNJ Justices. The Supremes may not operate quite like “Justice” Kavanaugh expects. I’m hoping, always the optimist, sometimes that works, sometimes hit don’t.

    Speaking of female music stars:

I’ve been rocking out with Susan Tedeschi lately. The Tedeschi Trucks Band is a great, tight unit of superb musicians working together all over the world, and Susan Tedeschi is an amazing singer and guitarist. Derek Trucks is a good guitarist, but I think his girlfriend has him beat, a little. Just my preference, really, as Derek is a burner tearing up the thang, but Susan is a little more melodic.

I lucked into seeing and hearing the blues for the first time at the Newport Folk Fesitval in the summer of 1968, and have loved it ever since. Great to have young musicians keeping that flame alive and burning bright and hot. Just go to Youtube and search on “susan tedsechi” and then pick Midnight in Harlem for one good place to start.

So here’s the thing. Even before this announcement, Taylor Swift had donated heavily to RAINN and pro-LGBT charities, had supported Kesha in her fight against the horrific abuse she’d been subjected to, and had gone to court against someone who’d groped her. Anyone who thought she was going to support Republicans was either ignorant or delusional.

Don’t get me wrong; I find myself wishing she’d spoken out more explicitly sooner, too. Given the knife-edge upon which 2016 turned, something banal as Swift endorsing Clinton could literally have changed the outcome of the election. But I can’t find it in me to care too much. She’s spoken out now, and not in a half-assed manner, either.

I still don’t think I could tell you how any of her songs go, though. I know I’ve heard several of them, and some of them seemed fine when they were on, but I haven’t gone back to seek them out.
