Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

White supremacy is terrorism.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

…and a burning sense of injustice to juice the soul.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Maybe you would prefer that we take Joelle’s side in ALL CAPS?

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

Let there be snark.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

We celebrated National Coming Out Day at my workplace today with an unveiling of an art installation put up by our office’s pride group. It is a rainbow sign with the message “Prejudice is ugly, people are beautiful”, with a border frame that had been signed by many of us at a previous event. I am grateful for my workplace culture when it comes to diversity and inclusion – especially LGBTQ…

I volunteered for Obama in 08 and 12. His campaign office was based in our office. In 16 there was no Hillary campaign. Granted the county (Onslow) went to Romney by 30 points in 12 but the surrounding counties are heavily black and gathering those votes for Hillary could have made a hell of a difference. It could have made NC Blue again but alas it was not to be.

Moar good stuff: He may not have provided it to his guests suckers, but this guy is guaranteed solid housing and real food for a few years. And he will get mental health treatment too.

WaPost: The Fyre Festival was a total disaster. Its founder is going to prison for wire fraud.

Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to wire fraud after the failed music festival in 2017 in the Bahamas, has been sentenced to six years in prison, according to reports.

McFarland was accused of defrauding investors in his company, Fyre Media, and in the music festival, which was reportedly billed as the next Coachella.

But … when concertgoers showed up at the site in April 2017, they found tents still in boxes, less-than-luxurious meal options [cheese sandwiches, if 2 slices of cheese and 2 slices of bread can be called that] and an empty stage.

“The remorse I feel is crushing,” McFarland said Thursday in court, according to Vice. “I lived every day with the weight of knowing that I literally destroyed the lives of my friends and family.”

During his sentencing hearing Thursday, McFarland, repeatedly apologized, asking the court to show leniency — a request that his counsel had also made earlier this month, arguing that McFarland had been recently diagnosed with untreated bipolar disorder, according to Vice.

… U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald told McFarland that “bipolar does not excuse behavior.” She sentenced him to six years behind bars and ordered him to hand over $26,182,386, Vice said. Buchwald could have sentenced McFarland to up to 20 years in prison.

In keeping with our previous thread about bipolar. Grandiose thinking without sufficient planning. A-yup. It’s amazing he got so many people to go along with him, though.

More from Vice; had no idea Billy had resumed the scamming this year, after he’d already entered a plea:

… It was a dramatic ending for McFarland, who had originally faced four to eight years behind bars for lying to investors in the Fyre Festival after he pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in March.

But that deal came before he was arrested for a second time, in June, after prosecutors determined he had spent his time out on bail targeting Fyre Festival attendees with a new ticket-selling scam he called “NYC VIP Access.”

Through the ticket scheme, McFarland purported to offer people access to high-profile events like the Met Gala, the Grammys, and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, when in fact he had no tickets or access to offer. Prosecutors say that in addition to the more than $26 million he stole from Fyre investors and contractors, McFarland also scammed at least $150,000 from unwitting NYC VIP Access clients.

… McFarland is also the subject of a multimillion- dollar class action lawsuit, filed by ticket holders, that is still winding its way through the courts.

In the office, we joke that Disney/Marvel sends over a big truck full of money when they really, really want an actor or director. They sent Robert Downey Jr two trucks full of money to get him to appear in the Avengers and Spiderman movies.

Also, in comic book movie land, James Gunn is doing OK after being kicked off the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

James Gunn has been hired by Warner Bros and DC to write with an eye to direct the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise. It’s the first job he’s taken since he parted ways with Disney, which let him go from the lucrative Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in July in the wake of old controversial tweets that had been compiled by alt-right journalists and sent to Disney.

I hear that Dave Bautista (Drax in Guardians) wants to jump from Marvel to DC to work with Gunn.

Also, this fall movie season has an interesting slate of movies. In addition to well-regarded movies like A Star is Born, I am looking forward to Widows, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Viola Davis, and also Green Book, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen.

For National Coming Out Day, I just wanted to touch on the weird duality I face.

As someone who’s “visibly trans,” I’m out of as a trans woman regardless of whether I want to be* or whether it’s safe for me.

But as a Femme mostly-attracted-to-women pansexual, I’m having to come out over and over and over — especially in lesbian spaces — and all-too-often face having my identity challenged, if not actively erased. Which is sadly also the experience of all too many of my fellow Femmes, as well as my bisexual/pansexual peers.

(For the non-LGBT folks here, the backstory is that the lesbian leans strongly into the androgynous-tom boy presentation, so even cisgender lesbians who consciously embrace a feminine presentation, i.e. Femme, are often invisible at best (and often assumed to be straight women crashing the party) and at worse are looked at with a bit of distain. Bisexual women are also often looked at with more than a bit of suspicion and distain, among other reasons as being seen as “too cowardly” to come out as lesbian. (Yeah, that whole “sexuality is spectrum” doesn’t always seem to resonate.) There’s also the issue that there’s a lot of lesbians who support trans women — unless that means actually being willing to date them. Meanwhile trans guys are hawt.)

*I do (and as the tagline on my FB page says, I’m intentionally visible “for those who can’t be”), although I’d prefer my being trans is the third or fourth most interesting thing about me.

@Major Major Major Major: And that is due to the strength of the Food & Culinary Workers Union, which has a lot of hispanic members.

The fundamental prob w/ low Hispanic voting is historically hispanics don’t vote—therefore it is a non-modeled/learned behavior. The biggest factor in an 18 yr old voting is whether their parents vote. Then on top of that add all the other barriers/fears an average hispanic voter confronts in going to vote.

So, throwing tons of resources at boosting turnout helps (and I bet Betos campaign is doing that) but it will take years of that effort to move the bar in a substantial way.

That’s one reason his polling vs Cruz is suddenly looking worse—pollsters moving from a “registered” voter to a “likely” voter model. If Beto somehow wins it will be on the backs of folks who wouldn’t normally be voting.

I’d prefer my being trans is the third or fourth most interesting thing about me.

I encountered your comments here and noted them with interest and a sense of commonality on lots of issues for quite a while before it registered that you’re trans, so – as far as I’m concerned – that’s entirely true. I’m grateful that you’ve been willing to share so much of your viewpoint, your experiences, your transformation, your travels, etc., because I find them interesting, but I’m pretty sure I still would even if they didn’t include your trans-specific experiences. And I’m sorry so many of those experiences are so fraught in the way you describe. That part sucks.

I hope that came out right.

    Sorry.

Culturally conditioned sexual “norms” are found almost everywhere.

Often they are reinforced in binary social groups,

I found that the most “open” people, were found in the “kink” communities, although finding the right match was a lot harder because of the diversity.

Online Communities are great, because it’s alot easier to find “like” people when almost the whole world’s gene pool is included, but it often won’t lead to real world dating, due to distance.

Funny thing is, I found the person I was looking for, when I had stopped looking and was just enjoying a supportive social circle.

    Take care.

There’s also too many (white lady) “feminists” whose feminism isn’t intersectional. Plus, as Julia Serano’s excellent book, “Whipping Girl,” points out, there’s a good amount of internalize misogyny in the feminist and lesbian communities.

And yes, the kink community tends to be far more open-minded. One reason there’s a higher percentage of trans folks, in my experience.

I have not said, because I’m having way too much fun with the Nym Squad, but I am worried sick about three close members of my family:

    1. My sister has Pulmonary scleroderma. She also has an unrelated (AFAIK) but severe prolapsed uterus. At least two surgeries (lung surgery and hysterectomy) are in her near future.

    2. My first cousin, who actually feels more like a sibling (he grew up with us until his mum remarried and moved them all to Canada) is morbidly obese and diabetic, and it’s caught up with him. His feet are full of necrotic tissue, and he has developed an out of control infection in one foot. Is undergoing surgery right now, even as I type. Just hope they don’t have to amputate.

    3. In the meantime, his wife is thousands of miles away, in Victoria, BC, caring for their daughter who had a 15-pound (not a typo: 15-POUND) fibroid removed last week along with a hysterectomy. Her recovery will take some time.

Sorry. This is way TMI about my my family, but I am really worried and sad and distracted, and jackals are the best vent-rant recipients anywhere. Thanks for letting me share my concerns.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve read your other posts, but haven’t commented before. I never went to the Michigan Women’s Festival, but my wife went a couple of times and stopped going because of their anti-trans policy. I always found the appearance policing I’d guess I’d call it in the lesbian community really weird and counter productive. My wife and a really good friend of mine got crap from some of the more militant separatist lesbians for having long hair. That was several years ago, but by assumption is that the separatist lesbians’ thinking was that if you’re not trying to attract a man, why would you have long hair? I’ve always thought it was silly since the lesbian dating pool is rather small. I’m happily married now, but if I were single I wouldn’t dismiss a woman with long hair or is a femme or femme-presenting. As long as she had a sense of humor and was kind, I think we could have some fun.
