We celebrated National Coming Out Day at my workplace today with an unveiling of an art installation put up by our office’s pride group. It is a rainbow sign with the message “Prejudice is ugly, people are beautiful”, with a border frame that had been signed by many of us at a previous event. I am grateful for my workplace culture when it comes to diversity and inclusion – especially LGBTQ…

I volunteered for Obama in 08 and 12. His campaign office was based in our office. In 16 there was no Hillary campaign. Granted the county (Onslow) went to Romney by 30 points in 12 but the surrounding counties are heavily black and gathering those votes for Hillary could have made a hell of a difference. It could have made NC Blue again but alas it was not to be.

Sister Golden Bear
For National Coming Out Day, I just wanted to touch on the weird duality I face.
As someone who’s “visibly trans,” I’m out of as a trans woman regardless of whether I want to be* or whether it’s safe for me.
But as a Femme mostly-attracted-to-women pansexual, I’m having to come out over and over and over — especially in lesbian spaces — and all-too-often face having my identity challenged, if not actively erased. Which is sadly also the experience of all too many of my fellow Femmes, as well as my bisexual/pansexual peers.
(For the non-LGBT folks here, the backstory is that the lesbian leans strongly into the androgynous-tom boy presentation, so even cisgender lesbians who consciously embrace a feminine presentation, i.e. Femme, are often invisible at best (and often assumed to be straight women crashing the party) and at worse are looked at with a bit of distain. Bisexual women are also often looked at with more than a bit of suspicion and distain, among other reasons as being seen as “too cowardly” to come out as lesbian. (Yeah, that whole “sexuality is spectrum” doesn’t always seem to resonate.) There’s also the issue that there’s a lot of lesbians who support trans women — unless that means actually being willing to date them. Meanwhile trans guys are hawt.)
*I do (and as the tagline on my FB page says, I’m intentionally visible “for those who can’t be”), although I’d prefer my being trans is the third or fourth most interesting thing about me.

@lamh36: For those checking their registration, it’s important to let them know to vote in person with a photo i.d. The worse case scenario is that they stay home because they think they are not registered. The local news has been covering it.
Omnes Omnibus
@Sister Golden Bear: You are interesting?
Marcopolo
@Major Major Major Major: And that is due to the strength of the Food & Culinary Workers Union, which has a lot of hispanic members.
The fundamental prob w/ low Hispanic voting is historically hispanics don’t vote—therefore it is a non-modeled/learned behavior. The biggest factor in an 18 yr old voting is whether their parents vote. Then on top of that add all the other barriers/fears an average hispanic voter confronts in going to vote.
So, throwing tons of resources at boosting turnout helps (and I bet Betos campaign is doing that) but it will take years of that effort to move the bar in a substantial way.
That’s one reason his polling vs Cruz is suddenly looking worse—pollsters moving from a “registered” voter to a “likely” voter model. If Beto somehow wins it will be on the backs of folks who wouldn’t normally be voting.

I encountered your comments here and noted them with interest and a sense of commonality on lots of issues for quite a while before it registered that you’re trans, so – as far as I’m concerned – that’s entirely true. I’m grateful that you’ve been willing to share so much of your viewpoint, your experiences, your transformation, your travels, etc., because I find them interesting, but I’m pretty sure I still would even if they didn’t include your trans-specific experiences. Granted, as a country, America is that guy with his beer gut out, rather furry, in dirty draws and holding an AK. @Sister Golden Bear:
Sorry.
Culturally conditioned sexual “norms” are found almost everywhere.
Often they are reinforced in binary social groups,
I found that the most “open” people, were found in the “kink” communities, although finding the right match was a lot harder because of the diversity.
Online Communities are great, because it’s alot easier to find “like” people when almost the whole world’s gene pool is included, but it often won’t lead to real world dating, due to distance.
Funny thing is, I found the person I was looking for, when I had stopped looking and was just enjoying a supportive social circle.
Take care.

@ruemara and @Jay: Yeah, there’s a lot of border policing by people insecure in their own identities, and/or looking for other people’s lives to valid their own life decisions and/or just uncomfortable with ambiguity and/or unwilling to understand that their life experience isn’t everyone else’s (especially those who used a bisexual identity as a way station.)
There’s also too many (white lady) “feminists” whose feminism isn’t intersectional. Plus, as Julia Serano’s excellent book, “Whipping Girl,” points out, there’s a good amount of internalize misogyny in the feminist and lesbian communities.
And yes, the kink community tends to be far more open-minded. One reason there’s a higher percentage of trans folks, in my experience.

I have not said, because I’m having way too much fun with the Nym Squad, but I am worried sick about three close members of my family:
1. My sister has Pulmonary scleroderma. She also has an unrelated (AFAIK) but severe prolapsed uterus. At least two surgeries (lung surgery and hysterectomy) are in her near future.
2. My first cousin, who actually feels more like a sibling (he grew up with us until his mum remarried and moved them all to Canada) is morbidly obese and diabetic, and it’s caught up with him. His feet are full of necrotic tissue, and he has developed an out of control infection in one foot. Is undergoing surgery right now, even as I type. Just hope they don’t have to amputate.
3. In the meantime, his wife is thousands of miles away, in Victoria, BC, caring for their daughter who had a 15-pound (not a typo: 15-POUND) fibroid removed last week along with a hysterectomy. Her recovery will take some time.

Thank you. I’m thousands of miles from all of them. Cousin’s in Owen Sound, Ontario; his daughter’s in Victoria, BC; and my sister lives in Aurora, CO. All of them a hefty long drive from the suburbs of Atlanta.

OMG hearing Barack in that clip just made all the tightness in my chest disappear.

I adored listening to Michael outside my window in the wee hours. Never a flicker of power, but my apartment complex was built after the “bury those wires underground” law was passed a couple of decades ago.
Love to listen to rain (and I don’t even mind Donner und Blitzen usually) as long as I’m safely and comfortably inside. Out driving in it? Not so much.

It’s one of those classic little girl things, so they will probably want to see it. Except for my favorite of your group, Zooey, who I suspect is already too skeptical and level-headed to be interested in such treacly nonsense. ? I still envision an “MD” after her name sometime in the future.

@Subaru Diane: I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. My wife and I just had a friend who’s diabetic go through a scare because of an infection in one of her feet and some necrotic tissue in the same foot. Doctors were able to remove the necrotic tissue without her losing her foot. I wish your family members swift recoveries.
Subaru Diane
@Karen S.:
Thank you. I know his chances of saving the foot are much better than they would have been even a decade ago, so I’m trying to stay hopeful! I’m glad your friend didn’t lose her foot; that gives me optimism.

@Sister Golden Bear:
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve read your other posts, but haven’t commented before. I never went to the Michigan Women’s Festival, but my wife went a couple of times and stopped going because of their anti-trans policy. I always found the appearance policing I’d guess I’d call it in the lesbian community really weird and counter productive. My wife and a really good friend of mine got crap from some of the more militant separatist lesbians for having long hair. That was several years ago, but by assumption is that the separatist lesbians’ thinking was that if you’re not trying to attract a man, why would you have long hair? I’ve always thought it was silly since the lesbian dating pool is rather small. I’m happily married now, but if I were single I wouldn’t dismiss a woman with long hair or is a femme or femme-presenting. As long as she had a sense of humor and was kind, I think we could have some fun.

Yeah, I know — immigration violations are a civil offense but they’re allowed to treat people like criminals. It was a horrible system already and Trump is just making it worse. ?

@Mnemosyne: yeah…Zoe’s (3 yrs old) just not into live-action stuff…and she barely stand the singing movies…LOL.
Madison is a big girl at 7 and she not into fantasy as much as she used to be…though she still loves cartoons and pre-teen kids movie you see on Netflix.
Layla (2 yrs old), like singing movies…but if/when the singing stops…she gets disinterested…until the singing starts again….lol

I lived in OH in 2004 and Ken Blackwell fucked a lot of areas, more than just the majority black areas. I lived northeast of the city, in a suburb and good ole Kenny combined precincts and cut back the numbers of voting machines so that the lines were huge and people left. I waited in line for 4 hours to vote and it was raining. I had voted there in 1996 and 2000 so I knew what normal was. This wasn’t normal.

@Karen S.: Thank you.
“Appearance policing” is a good way of putting it. In the Bay Area it often has a component of who’s “more alternative than thou.” So a more conventional appearance must mean you’re a sellout marketing bimbo at some dot-com who busy evicting tenants and eating non-vegan hummus.
