Democratic fundraising success may be a harbinger of things to come in November:
If Democrats beat their projections on Nov. 6 — say, they win 63 House seats, equalling the number that Republicans won in 2010, an unlikely-but-not-impossible scenario — we may look back on these fundraising numbers as the canary in the coal mine. That data, plus Democrats’ very strong performances in special elections, could look like tangible signs of a Democratic turnout surge that pollsters and pundits perhaps won’t have paid enough attention to.
A lot of you have asked for GOTV groups to give to. Here’s one that Maze Dancer has talked a lot about, Four Directions, that is dedicated to getting Native Americans to the polls. That could be crucial in North Dakota.

Will do this as soon as my MacBook recovers I hope from a vase full of water spilled on ithe keyboard during a memorial service this afternoon.
Any ideas about the best thing to do? I don’t think the bury-in-rice method for phones is ok for it — (or would it be ok, if the machine is closed up?). Maybe I need to make a dehumidifying environment for it somehow. (Or heat the bottom slightly w a heating pad? )
No hair drier.
Sorry to go OT. I need it today so panic is in the air.

@Aleta: Just the keyboard? I assume you turned it upside down. I did that right away and my keyboard recovered unscathed.
Yutsano
Four Directions does need our help. They need to assist the tribes into getting as many lawyers into voting laces on reservations so they can assign the addresses to tribal leaders. And also for the inevitable lawsuit when Cramer loses.

@Aleta:
Let it sit opened (and off) for a few days without using it. Maybe a blow dryer at a low, cool setting?
opiejeanne
@Aleta: Whatever you do, don’t turn it on “just to check”.
I speak from experience.

I so want November 6 to be the day we start to wipe the smile off his smug orange face.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: There is no such thing as “just the keyboard” on a Macbook. There is nothing one can do but let it sit and see if it will work later. There are moisture sensors in them that void applecare.

Gave some to Four Directions, now back to post card writing…

Donated to Four Directions. Thanks for the opportunity to support our bothers and sisters on the Res.
ETA: When wife spilled a drink on her laptop, after turning it upside down I laid it on the floor vent and turned the fan on in the HVAC. If you can, turn on the A/C to dehumidify the circulating air. If’s the weather is already cold, use the heat to blow warm air. If you don’t have forced air this suggestion won’t help. A fan? Really low oven setting?

Not very liquid right now financially, but I did kick in for this. How sweet it would be to defy the bigots in N Dakota and elect a Democrat!

@Aleta: I once dumped a full glass of red wine into the keyboard of my thinkpad. Following the below instructions, the lappie worked perfectly, and for years afterwards.
Googling taught me:
(0) of course, disconnect, remove batteries, etc, instanter. Otherwise, it’s a goner. But you already did this.
(1) unless the water is *perfectly* pure (i.e. distilled), buy a couple of jugs of distilled water and wash it thru the laptop. This is to ensure that when it dries, it doesn’t have any residues. If it were anything with sugar (wine, OJ, coffee) this would be *essential*. Honestly, it can’t hurt to do this anyway, just to be sure.
(2) set it up in a dry spot so water can drip out (e.g., I set it on its side, open), remove all removable covers, and set a fan to blow thru/across it.
(3) wait a few days with the fan blowing. I think I waited 3 days.
[I’d be skeptical about “use a blow dryer for a few hours”. It requires that you can get at every single spot where there’s a few drops of water hiding out. Whereas setting up a naturally desiccating environment and waiting is much more foolproof.
This doesn’t help you if you want to get the thing running today, but …. I guess I’d suggest that that’s optimistic and if you try, you might burn it out. Patience is your friend in this.
This isn’t the link I followed, but since it was a decade ago, I don’t remember where it was:
http://www.grynx.com/projects/wine-in-laptop/
ETA: the longer you’re willing to wait, putting dry-and-if-possible-warm air across the lappie, the better-off you’ll be. Longer is always better.

I was kidding about the oven… I thought it would be obvious, but maybe not, so please:
People! Don’t put your hardware in the oven!!!

trump now claiming in Arizona that the Saudi arms dealz are responsible for 600,000 jobs.That’s up from the 500,000 he claimed last week and from the 40,000 originally claimed at the time it was “negotiated”.
i guess inflation is out of control/
Dorothy A. Winsor
@raven: Oh. Good point!
Ruckus
@lgerard:
It’s not inflation that’s out of control………… as I’d bet you well know.
OK maybe it’s the inflation in what passes for his mind. I like that we are over 2 yrs out from the next election and he’s been running for well over a year to get the job he’s already got. I don’t believe he understands any type of real merit system, just the huge delusions in his tiny, tiny, little mind. Such a shame there isn’t room in there for anything else.

@lgerard:
I just heard him say $450 billion and 1 million jobs. Before long, it will be to Infinity and beyond!

I spilled wine, water and coffee on my old mac laptop, never huge amounts. It recovered, mostly, until it recently started getting the spinning beachball and quitting Safari too often and I replaced it couple months ago. I don’t know if the periodic baptisms hastened its demise. I would turn it on its side and let it sit over night. A couple keys took longer to recover than others.

@opiejeanne:
Me too, but I’m having flashbacks to 2016.

@Yutsano: Exactly. The issue was the obvious targeted bill to require street addresses that would disenfranchise virtually all Native Americans on reservations but is obviously partisan-based voter suppression. My understanding is that the reservation leadership will assign each registered voter a “street address” and isssue IDs accordingly. They can do this as they have autonomy/self-governance. (Native Americans were basically responsible for Heitcamp’s narrow 2012 victory.

I’m calling voters for the Gov. Kate campaign – and no one is answering their phone today! Of coarse, it’s amazing weather out, and there’s a local college football game today, so that’s not helping…
But at least nearly every one of the handful of people I’ve actually spoken with are 100% on board to re-elect Kate (who has just been a FANTASTIC Governor for Oregon so far!), so that’s reassuring.

Thanks for the pointer to Four Directions. Done.

@rikyrah: Kemp has thrown 340,000+ African-American voters off the registration database because they had “moved out of state”. A voter activist grroup got the entire list and systematically went through and checked. All those voters were still in GA. They are contacting them to tell them to get provisional ballots. If Abrams narrowly loses she should not concede and blow the whole outrageous scandal open and then sue Kemp.

Thank you. I’d have to be a bubblehead to put it in the oven. It’d be pointless after what the microwave already did to it.
Btw it seems that the MacBook Air battery can’t be removed afaict.
Since it went dead right away I thought it was off.
Technical Trivia: Then after 45 min it flickered and hummed; I tried to turn it off right awy but it wouldn’t go off. Then it seemed to go off. Then a while later it flickered again. Turned it off again, which worked right awa that time. Or it had died completely and that was the equivalent of it sitting up in bed for one last gasp.
it happened at the exact moment the memorial service ended. The gathering itself gave way shortly after to the seething and festering of ancient grudges among the brothers and their wives and ex wives. What a day.

Rats, my comment didn’t take. Thanks everyone I appreciate the input a lot.

Thank you, Doug. Just seeing this now — on my way out the door for the evening, but I will donate when I get home.

@Starfish: Outstanding. If Hispanics in Arizona and Nevada ever start voting at the same rate as other ethnic groups, the Republicans are in for a very rude surprise.
Aleta
@Mainmata: I hope that the disenfranchised voters can sue the state (after they re-register and vote). 3 voters in NH, backed by ACLU lawyers, sued the state for throwing out their ballots in 2016 because of ‘signature mismatch.’ This year in August they won a decision about the state’s 40 yr old signature law. http://www.unionleader.com/politics/federal-judge-rules-40-years-of-validating-absentee-ballots-by-signature-in-nh-violates-us-constitution-20180815
I guess we have to help voters sue.

My wife and I voted early today in Nevada… Pulled the lever on a straight Democratic ticket. Well, actually, the voting machine spits out a nifty little strip of paper with all of our selections on it, and you then place it into the vote counting machine. After that, we got little “I Voted” stickers. By the looks of the folks in line, I’m guessing all we did was wipe out two of our fellow citizens votes, but it felt good anyway. Most of the D’s in Nevada are in either Clark County (Vegas) or Washoe County (Reno), but we still try to fight the good fight anyway. It felt good to kick Amodei and Heller in the nuts. I hope they actually feel it come November.
