Steve Scalise was the guy shot and almost killed at the Congressional baseball practice:
He wasn’t “ribbing” Gianforte, he was praising him. He said Gianforte’s body-slam made Gianforte “my kind of – he’s my guy.” He then acknowledged, “I shouldn’t say this.” Then he told Gianforte, “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” https://t.co/H6NhFNF0R0

@Ruckus: who said it’s going to fix everything? But if you want to see the #Rapeublicans double down on Trumpism, then stay home on Nov. 6th. A GOP victory next month is vindication. They will gleefully come for your Social Security and Medicare and whatever else they think they can get away with.

No, I won’t go there. Even though he and Scalise deserve it. Every bit.
They are both unquestionably evil.
Patricia Kayden
But it’s the Democrats who the MSM calls out for not being civil. It’s become the norm for Trump to engage in bullying and violent language. A few GOP Congresspeople tut tut and then everyone moves on to scolding the Democrats again.
Roger Moore
I think it’s a good thing for all of us to have a strong human reaction to anyone being murdered. Yes, it’s worse because it was a journalist, it’s terrible that it was that journalist’s own government that was supposed to be charged with defending him, etc. But there’s something deeply wrong with the world when we have to justify why we’re outraged at a murder.
Villago Delenda Est
@Patricia Kayden: My nym. Again and again.
They’re 50% of the problem all by themselves. The other 50% is the GOP.

@Major Major Major Major:
I realize that you didn’t mean it that way but look at how it might sound to someone not on your side. I’d like all this to be over tomorrow. But it won’t.
What we are seeing is the last 150+ yrs of not responding to bigotry. Of whitewashing the problem. It’s allowed, however he did it, the shitgibbon to be installed in the WH and continue his racist rallies around the country. It’s bad enough that he has no idea what the job entails or that he’s totally incapable of doing that. But he’s doing instead is using his position to normalize racism. And half our political class is cheering him on.
And not dealing with this as a problem for decades has made the problem a lot worse. Could it have been made better? No one will ever know. But it has the capability to destroy the country. And shitgibbon is further separating the two sides. We’ve had one war over this, is he going for a replay?
A Ghost To Most

@Ruckus:
Yup, fork in the road time. If the Democractic Party win’s just the House, the tide starts turning even though the puke funnel will keep flowing until 2020 and many horrors will continue, or get worse,
If the Democratic Party takes both the House and the Senate, things will get better faster.
If the Democrats don’t take House and/or Senate, the American experiment is over.
And Climate Change is coming like an express train.

I’m going to put together a more comprehensive post later but I wanted to give update on Leto. Found out more about crash – more head on than I realized. He hit gas tank and broke pelvis, the his head hit the windshield of the oncoming car, then he launched about 13ft where he luckily didn’t get run over by the car behind the one that hit him. Her statement to police was that she didn’t see him. I have receipts showing he just replaced his headlamp and got his inspection – so that’s on her since she didn’t have an arrow and should have yielded.
He keeps spiking fever today but they have had him breathing on his own almost all day. They gave him a slight boost on the respirator this evening though because they wanted to give him a break since he’s fighting fever too. He started to wake up a little a couple times and moved his head towards my voice but wasn’t ready yet and settle me back down.
Our son gets in tomorrow evening. I’m so excited to see him though I wish it had been for thanksgiving dinner or something instead. ?

We are at Lake Oconee for the weekend, sitting on the back porch, enjoying the cool weather and the lake view, and three houses down are a bunch of fucking southie teenagers drunk on miller lite (we checked) and playing poker on their back porch. Apparently people in Boston don’t know that sound carries across water and for two hours all we have been hearing is “I got two fucking queens, you better fucking fold!” “Fuck you I gotta fucking piss you wanna hold my fucking cock?” “Fuck you you fucking mook” and so on and so on and so on….

Like most humans we are protectors of the status that we know. In this country that means racist. Sure we have areas and maybe half the population that do not accept that and want to change it. But the half that accepts that and doesn’t want to change it, other than going backwards includes what looks like all the mainstream media. How much of what is going on would any of us know if not for the internet? For any of this to change there will have to be a lot of structural changes in our lives. I doubt seriously that it will turn around in the remainder of my life. I’d like to be wrong.

Just spent a very interesting half day here in Oregon’s Second (Walden), rousting new volunteers for Jamie McCleod-Skinner’s campaign in Wasco County.
Everyone who responded, 100℅, committed to helping the ground game in these last three weeks.
The goal of the JMS campaign now is to ensure that low-probability voters who have indicated support actually vote.
If what I saw today is marginally indicative of the rest of this district, Jamie stands a reasonable chance of one of the biggest upsets most folks are not even tracking.
If the worst case scenario is a narrow defeat for JMS, the true victory is that OR2 Dems have very effectively mobilized a ground game for the first time in history.
Anyone contributing even an ounce of effort to this campaign should feel immensely satisfied, no matter how the final tally adds up.

I don’t entirely buy it. This election is an important one. But it’s still one midterm. This is a marathon, and sometimes things don’t go your way. Taking some governorships and state legislatures is arguably as important as taking the House (for one thing, that’s a huge defense against vote suppression), and the 2020 Senate map looks a lot better than the 2018 one.

I fully understand the pain & fear you are experiencing and won’t tell you to try to not worry, it didn’t do me any good when people told me that. The accident laws in PA seem pretty horrible but the investigating officer seems pretty much on our side atm, so hopefully the woman at fault’s insurance will pay. Right now I’m more focused on his next breath and next surgery, getting this sweater knit as a distraction, making sure my anxious puppy isn’t neglected and trying not to toss my in-laws in the river (don’t tell them I said that). Next week the official report will be filed and our car insurance can get to work.

What do we do if the Dems don’t take at least the house? Well that is a toughie. 20 years ago I told my high school aged kids to get the hell out of the US. They did not. But 2 of the 3 have chosen to not have kids so they can easily run when they have to. We are old now & will die here and I expect that to be in poverty and maybe violently. I have no idea how our grandkids will make it out. The earth cannot support 7 billion people & a mass extinction event will happen. They may make it through, they may not. The amount of time we have to minimize the threat is tiny and if we cannot do so soon the results will be catastrophic for those grandkids. EVen if we only slow the freight train the results will be really bad.

@Anne Laurie:
I’ll quibble with your use of “ginning up” in the title.
It usually means to create or develop something, not to inspire or arouse a group of people (which is what I take your meaning to be).
OED: “To produce or develop (a desired product or outcome) by activity or effort; to work (something) up, esp. hastily or rapidly.”
Maybe I could see it in something like: “We need to gin up an angry mob for this Brooks Brothers riot we’re planning.” But “ginning up his angry mob” seems to indicate that it already exists and that your intending meaning is arousing or motivating the mob. So “ginning up” doesn’t seem to fit. Maybe something like “inflaming his angry mob” might be more precise.
frosty
@Avalune: Can you take leave without pay? I’ve done that at work. We can set up a gofundme here to help. I’d contribute. Alternatively, my company allows employees to donate unused leave time for people in your situation. Yours might, too. Try looking into both in between working on the sweater.

@frosty: yeah, it was handy in college and law school when I played actual gigs but has been overkill in the [actual number deleted] years since.
Clearly though Amir needs a Vox and probably a Roland Jazz Chorus in addition to the Champ.
A Marshall stack? Nah, that’s for the d-bags at websites with threaded comments!
Avalune
@Steve in the ATL: yeah unfortunately I have only been full time since April so I will burn my paid time pretty quick :( hence the work a few days a week and use the unpaid a few days. Gives me time to caregive but softens the financial blow. In theory we should be something for lost wages but I don’t want to hold my breath. Every time I try to be a responsible adult and plan shit it gets nuked from space anyway. I was just telling Mr Cole that I had the down payment to go pick up a car this weekend so he wouldn’t have to ride the bike – we just didn’t quite make it. This kind of really frustrating timing happens to us all the time. I give up!

@Steve in the ATL: I’ve got a National Resophonic T-shirt that I treasure because Don Young gave it to me on my pilgrimage to SLO after I mentioned I owned three of his axes.
Without him we’d all be playing beat to hell Duolians that would cost $10,000.
raven
@Avalune: Do not, under no circumstances, give up!

Joji Locatelli? She’s an Argentine knitwear designer who has some beautiful patterns. I love that boxy is back. I knit a Carbeth last Spring and I enjoy wearing it. Plus a bulky boxy is super quick.
My dad was in cardiothoracic ICU so it was like a supermax.

Fuck the Buckeyes!

Has Yarrow checked in recently? I’ve been worrying.

And to Purdue? Bwahahahaha!

@Steve in the ATL: I usually do this on football Saturday. Hell, we used to have great football threads on Saturdays until everyone got all wobbly. Plus, my brother in an insane Dodger fan so I have to watch them when I can. I’ve got 2 games on the tube and baseball on the iPad.

@A Ghost To Most: The courtier “journalists”, which is comprised of all teevee infotainers, and the scum of the Vichy Times, have all got to go.

@Steve in the ATL: I was also in to the SEC games. MSU has one of the best D’s in the county and LSU pretty much pounded them. There is hope!

@Steve in the ATL: @Amir Khalid: I started with a 1965 USA tube Vox Pathfinder, one EL84, with a bastardized Fender Champ circuit which amazingly enough had the AC30 crunch and chime. At 4 watts, of course.
Rule: It takes at least two amps to get the best out of your guitar. And two guitars to get the best out of your amp. I think it’s a geometric progression while your income is linear. Sad!
Avalune
@MomSense: Yeah her! I’m doing the original in fingering weight so nothing quick about that. I wasn’t familiar with her work until actress Judy Greer posted the sweater on her instagram as a potential knit-a-long.
@Raven: I just meant giving up planning things and adulting. Seems overrated! ?
Avalune
@raven: I grew up in Ohio so I like to root for THE Ohio state just to irritate Leto.
raven
@Avalune: That’s the name of that tune!

@Steve in the ATL:
The GE100 pedal lists the AC30 and the JC-120 among its seven amp voicings. Will that do?

The Insane Clown POSus disavows reality.
I don’t think like others, that the ReThugs will steal the vote, or deny it. Sure they will try mightly to gerrymander and voter supression their way to office. They might try to Brooks Brothers their way in a few close elections, but the Nazi’s arn’t Brooks Brother’s and many of the Original Brooks Brothers are Never Trumpers now.
The Insane Clown POSus will claim rigged vote, fake news, China hacks, Russian/Dem collusion, No Collusion!!!!Cofefe,
But the Deplorable and Gullibillie crowds have grown smaller and smaller to the point that Paid Actors, Nazi’s, Insane Clown Posus Deadhead’s can’t even crowd the podium.
As vile as many of the ReThug’s have become, some of them know that if you make peaceful change impossible, then violent change is the only option remaining, and they know, despite their Treason in Defence of Slavery, how the last Civil War turned out.

@Avalune: Everyone gots to be from somewhere. Our nephew lives there and has drank the kool-aid.

I didn’t know Judy Greer was a knitter. Cool.
So I guess we are not at Rhinebeck this weekend.

@raven: my whole family drank the kool aid. My most hill billy aunt in West Virginia is so liberal and drives everyone in the family crazy with her FB posts. I love her.
@MomSense: I actually kind of love her instagram because it’s largely knitting and dogs with some celebrity crap in between. She learned to knit when she stopped smoking I guess.

I feel like we clearly won the battle but they have won the war.

So glad he’s breathing on his own some now, that’s a great sign, even though it’s hard on him to have a vent replaced. I’m sure they have the best staff on such a case, and they’ll do the very best they can.
Also glad your kid is coming in from wherever he’s stationed. That will help you out a lot, I know.
My wife was in ICU for septic shock for weeks, in the hospital for 2 months, doing very now, recovered and out of PT to the point we can travel and enjoy retirement again.
Keep in touch, we’re all pulling for Leto now!

It’s only temporary, whether they lose power peacefully or not. They’re mainly in the position they’re in through illegitimate means and that won’t fly forever.

@Avalune:
Sounds like you have a good community of folks to help you and Leto out, for which I’m glad. When your managers set too work in order to help you out like that, those are good people to work with.
I was able to spend as much time with my wife in ICU as I could, neighbors fed the critters while I was in town with her, 12-18 hours a day. The nurses in that ICU were mostly ex military medics, so his trauma would have been right up their alley, they had all served with combat troops in the ‘stans, and were great guys, so sharp.
I would get home, cuddle with the furrballs, crash. Feed them in the morning and head back to the hospital, which is a teaching hospital.
You take care, now!

Why should anybody be arsed to read anything on the tubes.
The Tubes is for porn and cat memes.

As that demonstrates an inarguable lack of basic regard toward those with whom you’re attempting communication, I for one shall certainly refrain from doing so in the future.

@Avalune: I must have missed your original post. I’m so sorry to hear about what has happened. It sounds like Leto is moving in the right direction and you are getting support from friends, family and work.
Stay strong and know you have our love and support.

@Avalune: when my dad was in ICU for weeks, the one thing that made it bearable was a really comfy folding chair-kind of a webbing instead of just metal, and music (west coast cool was his LIFE).
Medically, we live in an age of miracles and wonder. That Leto was armored up really helps increase survival and healing. The universe will turn to give your family what it needs and as bad as these circumstances are, be on the lookout for brief moments of joy. Wishing you all the strength and Grace to endure this.

@Avalune: Your reports of Leto’s distress reminded me immediately of one of my favorite authors, John Gardner, whose life was cut untimely short while riding his motorcycle. Glad to hear that Leto is on the road back. Best thoughts for the Duke (presuming that’s the source of his nym) & all of House Atreides in this difficult time.
Uncle Cosmo
@Steve in the ATL:
Avalune
@Uncle Cosmo: Lol, yep you got his nym source. Our son is named Paul (Maud dib was likely to get him picked on in school).
I like Gardner too. MFA in English though don’t study my use of it too hard these days.
