Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

We will not go back.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Republicans in disarray!

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

So many bastards, so little time.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Trump: "Democrats produce mobs, Republicans produce jobs. Hashtag. Right? That's called hashtag. That's a new hashtag. That's a hot one."

The very civil crowd cheers very civilly when our civil president brings up Gianforte body slamming a reporter

Reporter: "Do you regret bringing up, last night at your rally, the assault on a reporter by a Congressman?"

In a couple weeks, Trump is going to be raving about how the guys who worked the bone saw. "Really manly. You ever cut off a limb? Wow, that's a lot of work. Takes a lot of muscle. Those are my kind of guys."

— Kevin M. Kruse (@KevinMKruse) October 19, 2018

Steve Scalise was the guy shot and almost killed at the Congressional baseball practice:

He wasn’t “ribbing” Gianforte, he was praising him. He said Gianforte’s body-slam made Gianforte “my kind of – he’s my guy.” He then acknowledged, “I shouldn’t say this.” Then he told Gianforte, “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” https://t.co/H6NhFNF0R0

They specifically tasked him to do it because doing so serves as an innoculaton against the obvious response to the absurdity of the statement.

The president of the United States is covering up the murder of one journalist, celebrating the assault of another, and accusing his political opponents of being an illegitimate mob. And your key question is “will voters support this message at the polls?” Word?

— jamelle g-g-ghoulie ? (@jbouie) October 19, 2018

More than that, it's OK for Americans who care about a free press to have a strong tribal reaction to journalists being murdered. https://t.co/Md3mBNnYE9

— Kevin M. Kruse (@KevinMKruse) October 20, 2018

People wonder how the Germans, Serbs, Rwandans and others could do what they did. But they’re no worse than us. People are the same everywhere: Evil individuals walk among us. What keeps them in check are things like law, norms and traditions. What unleashes them is a demagogue. https://t.co/0C85bR0mEY

— Walter Shaub (@waltshaub) October 19, 2018

Five dead in Annapolis can’t opine on this, but if we had enough national honor left to speak for them, we’d say the President of the United States is unfit to serve our republic. But we have nothing. We are done. https://t.co/FR5IVVFpEF

But it’s the Democrats who the MSM calls out for not being civil. It’s become the norm for Trump to engage in bullying and violent language. A few GOP Congresspeople tut tut and then everyone moves on to scolding the Democrats again.

More than that, it’s OK for Americans who care about a free press to have a strong tribal reaction to journalists being murdered.

I think it’s a good thing for all of us to have a strong human reaction to anyone being murdered. Yes, it’s worse because it was a journalist, it’s terrible that it was that journalist’s own government that was supposed to be charged with defending him, etc. But there’s something deeply wrong with the world when we have to justify why we’re outraged at a murder.

I’m not staying home, I’ve voted since I was allowed to. Every time, mid terms and national. 48 yrs of voting.
    @Major Major Major Major:
I realize that you didn’t mean it that way but look at how it might sound to someone not on your side. I’d like all this to be over tomorrow. But it won’t.
What we are seeing is the last 150+ yrs of not responding to bigotry. Of whitewashing the problem. It’s allowed, however he did it, the shitgibbon to be installed in the WH and continue his racist rallies around the country. It’s bad enough that he has no idea what the job entails or that he’s totally incapable of doing that. But he’s doing instead is using his position to normalize racism. And half our political class is cheering him on.
And not dealing with this as a problem for decades has made the problem a lot worse. Could it have been made better? No one will ever know. But it has the capability to destroy the country. And shitgibbon is further separating the two sides. We’ve had one war over this, is he going for a replay?

I don’t have much to contribute to the politics besides disgust and hey look at kitties!

I’m going to put together a more comprehensive post later but I wanted to give update on Leto. Found out more about crash – more head on than I realized. He hit gas tank and broke pelvis, the his head hit the windshield of the oncoming car, then he launched about 13ft where he luckily didn’t get run over by the car behind the one that hit him. Her statement to police was that she didn’t see him. I have receipts showing he just replaced his headlamp and got his inspection – so that’s on her since she didn’t have an arrow and should have yielded.

He keeps spiking fever today but they have had him breathing on his own almost all day. They gave him a slight boost on the respirator this evening though because they wanted to give him a break since he’s fighting fever too. He started to wake up a little a couple times and moved his head towards my voice but wasn’t ready yet and settle me back down.

Our son gets in tomorrow evening. I’m so excited to see him though I wish it had been for thanksgiving dinner or something instead. ?

    First, QFT.
Like most humans we are protectors of the status that we know. In this country that means racist. Sure we have areas and maybe half the population that do not accept that and want to change it. But the half that accepts that and doesn’t want to change it, other than going backwards includes what looks like all the mainstream media. How much of what is going on would any of us know if not for the internet? For any of this to change there will have to be a lot of structural changes in our lives. I doubt seriously that it will turn around in the remainder of my life. I’d like to be wrong.

Just spent a very interesting half day here in Oregon’s Second (Walden), rousting new volunteers for Jamie McCleod-Skinner’s campaign in Wasco County.

Everyone who responded, 100℅, committed to helping the ground game in these last three weeks.

The goal of the JMS campaign now is to ensure that low-probability voters who have indicated support actually vote.

If what I saw today is marginally indicative of the rest of this district, Jamie stands a reasonable chance of one of the biggest upsets most folks are not even tracking.

If the worst case scenario is a narrow defeat for JMS, the true victory is that OR2 Dems have very effectively mobilized a ground game for the first time in history.

Anyone contributing even an ounce of effort to this campaign should feel immensely satisfied, no matter how the final tally adds up.

If the Democrats don’t take House and/or Senate, the American experiment is over.

If this happens, in spite of everything (~12-15% probability according to 538, depending on how you figure House/Senate correlation), what are you going to do?

The thing is, I’ve heard statements like this one about several past US elections that we already lost. And here we are. So was it over a long time ago?

I don’t entirely buy it. This election is an important one. But it’s still one midterm. This is a marathon, and sometimes things don’t go your way. Taking some governorships and state legislatures is arguably as important as taking the House (for one thing, that’s a huge defense against vote suppression), and the 2020 Senate map looks a lot better than the 2018 one.

What do we do if the Dems don’t take at least the house? Well that is a toughie. 20 years ago I told my high school aged kids to get the hell out of the US. They did not. But 2 of the 3 have chosen to not have kids so they can easily run when they have to. We are old now & will die here and I expect that to be in poverty and maybe violently. I have no idea how our grandkids will make it out. The earth cannot support 7 billion people & a mass extinction event will happen. They may make it through, they may not. The amount of time we have to minimize the threat is tiny and if we cannot do so soon the results will be catastrophic for those grandkids. EVen if we only slow the freight train the results will be really bad.

There has not been a more critical election since 1860 and the margin for error this time is not even 10% of what it was in 1860.

    @Anne Laurie:

I’ll quibble with your use of “ginning up” in the title.

It usually means to create or develop something, not to inspire or arouse a group of people (which is what I take your meaning to be).

OED: “To produce or develop (a desired product or outcome) by activity or effort; to work (something) up, esp. hastily or rapidly.”

Maybe I could see it in something like: “We need to gin up an angry mob for this Brooks Brothers riot we’re planning.” But “ginning up his angry mob” seems to indicate that it already exists and that your intending meaning is arousing or motivating the mob. So “ginning up” doesn’t seem to fit. Maybe something like “inflaming his angry mob” might be more precise.

So glad he’s breathing on his own some now, that’s a great sign, even though it’s hard on him to have a vent replaced. I’m sure they have the best staff on such a case, and they’ll do the very best they can.

Also glad your kid is coming in from wherever he’s stationed. That will help you out a lot, I know.

My wife was in ICU for septic shock for weeks, in the hospital for 2 months, doing very now, recovered and out of PT to the point we can travel and enjoy retirement again.

Keep in touch, we’re all pulling for Leto now!

Sounds like you have a good community of folks to help you and Leto out, for which I’m glad. When your managers set too work in order to help you out like that, those are good people to work with.

I was able to spend as much time with my wife in ICU as I could, neighbors fed the critters while I was in town with her, 12-18 hours a day. The nurses in that ICU were mostly ex military medics, so his trauma would have been right up their alley, they had all served with combat troops in the ‘stans, and were great guys, so sharp.

I would get home, cuddle with the furrballs, crash. Feed them in the morning and head back to the hospital, which is a teaching hospital.

    You take care, now!

@Avalune: when my dad was in ICU for weeks, the one thing that made it bearable was a really comfy folding chair-kind of a webbing instead of just metal, and music (west coast cool was his LIFE).
Medically, we live in an age of miracles and wonder. That Leto was armored up really helps increase survival and healing. The universe will turn to give your family what it needs and as bad as these circumstances are, be on the lookout for brief moments of joy. Wishing you all the strength and Grace to endure this.

@Avalune: Your reports of Leto’s distress reminded me immediately of one of my favorite authors, John Gardner, whose life was cut untimely short while riding his motorcycle. Glad to hear that Leto is on the road back. Best thoughts for the Duke (presuming that’s the source of his nym) & all of House Atreides in this difficult time.
