Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

In my day, never was longer.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans in disarray!

    Meanwhile…

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida park was renamed after iconic rocker Tom Petty, who played at that park as a boy.

The Gainesville Sun reports that hundreds of members of the Tom Petty Nation! fan club visited Gainesville on Saturday to celebrate the star’s birthday with his music and the dedication of the former Northeast Park as Tom Petty Park.

His family was also on hand.

“My brother and I grew up in this park. We played as kids. My cousin reminded me the other day of my remark that it was a sanctuary, and it really was,” said brother Bruce Petty. “It was a place for us to escape and be kids and have fun. The fact that we are doing this today and the part that we played in it makes it so much more special.”

    ”
After the country announced economic austerity measures in 2015 to offset low oil prices and control a widening budget gap, McKinsey & Company, the consulting firm, measured the public reception of those policies.

In a nine-page report, a copy of which was obtained by The Times, McKinsey found that the measures received twice as much coverage on Twitter than in the country’s traditional news media or blogs, and that negative sentiment far outweighed positive reactions on social media.

Three people were driving the conversation on Twitter, the firm found: the writer Khalid al-Alkami; Mr. Abdulaziz, the young dissident living in Canada; and an anonymous user who went by Ahmad.

After the report was issued, Mr. Alkami was arrested, the human rights group ALQST said. Mr. Abdulaziz said that Saudi government officials imprisoned two of his brothers and hacked his cellphone, an account supported by a researcher at Citizen Lab. Ahmad, the anonymous account, was shut down.”

Trump starts leaving postal union in latest anti-China move

President Donald Trump argues that the 144-year-old Universal Post Union benefits China and other countries at the expense of U.S. businesses — making it cheaper to ship packages from Beijing to New York than from San Francisco to the U.S. East coast, which particularly benefits Chinese manufacturers. The officials say the treaty is used by shippers of the narcotic fentanyl to the U.S. from China.

    […]

The move was welcomed by the U.S National Association of Manufacturers, which called the exiting postal pact “outdated” in the age of e-commerce and at a time of Chinese manufacturing dominance.

“Manufacturers and manufacturing workers in the United States will greatly benefit from a modernized and far more fair arrangement with China,” Jay Timmons, president of the manufacturers association, said in a statement.

This might be a problem re: China getting better rates but this is stupidest possible fucking way to deal with it. Timmons is a moron if he thinks the US under Trump is going to get a “modernized and far more fair arrangement” with China. And I question whether the International Postal Union is truly as “outdated” as he claims.

Christ, that’s somehow even worse than the one above it. Define “everything” NYT. The only way at this point (knock on wood) that the GOP could win “everything” would be through widespread election fraud by them to pull that off. If they do that and win, they’ll probably claim some bullshit mandate and go all the way to 11 on Trumpism. A lot of people are already angry. And there’s more of us than there are of them. There will likely be violence as enraged people learn the GOP is unilaterally moving to repeal everything we take for granted in the 21st century United States. You keep saying this, and it is insufficient. It matters how many people actually come out to vote, and how districts are drawn. And the GOP is aware of this, and do everything they can to tilt things to their advantage. And this is before you consider voter suppression efforts.

Yeah, there’s more of us. But we have to get out the vote and maximize what advantages we have.

    https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/10/21/18005594/trump-administration-transgender-sex-dna-test

Make no mistake, this is part of a literal five-point plan by the Talibapists — one that the administration and a number of states have already been busy implementing — to eradicate trans and non-binary people from public life, and I don’t mean figuratively. Maybe not camps, although there are those advocated for that, but by using the power of the government to harass us back into the closet, into leaving the country, or into suicide. They really don’t care which.

Yes, I plan to stand fight for now. But I’ve realized that I need to start seriously looking at exfil plans, just in case. Although the paranoid part of me worries that if I wait too long, my passport will get revoked for “lying” about my gender, in the same way that divorcees were deemed criminals in Gilead (since Gilead didn’t recognize pre-Gilead divorces, making any divorcee who remarried guilty of adulterous). I’m already afraid to get my passport updated — because I don’t look that much like my passport photo — because we’re already hearing about cases where the Passport Office is trying to revoke the gender marker changes of current passport holders, even in cases where the marker was changed years ago.

If you know any trans or non-binary folks, check up on them today. It’s getting hard to breathe and exist.

Here’s just a partial list of those who I think should go into the Hall prior to Ted Nugent: Radiohead; Jethro Tull, Willie Nelson; Roxy Music, the Cure, Judas Priest, Alan Parsons, Todd Rungren, Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, Wu-Tang Clan, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Doobie Brothers, the Monkees and Procul Harem. There’s more…

@Jay: it may come to that. And it breaks my heart. Not for me as much as for my country. And for my peers who don’t have the privilege I do in order to flee if needed.

I’m in a bad place today.

    Sorry Sister,

Try to work in a regime of “good places” to go on bad days.

Self care is really important these days for everybody sane.

    @patroclus:

Maybe start a GoFundMe to get Ted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, targeted at the Gullabillies,

Just don’t tell them it is urinal cakes and toilet paper with his face on it.

And to pay for two activists in Cleveland to put them back every day when Staff removes them.

I hope for your and all our sakes it won’t come to that. FWIW my ballot will reflect my support for you. And if you need to flee I know people in Vancouver who can help.

    @NotMax:
Listen, I’m not advocating for this. I’m predicting it, for whatever my prognostications are worth. I don’t want to see people dying in the streets for god’s sake. I was extrapolating from a highly unlikely premise by the NYT anyway.

    The Moar You Know

    October 22, 2018 at 1:35 pm

There will likely be violence as enraged people learn the GOP is unilaterally moving to repeal everything we take for granted in the 21st century United States. They’ll have to resort to shooting protesters to hold onto power. But of course, all that will do is pour gasoline on the fire…

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)  ??: And we all know how that movie ends, and it’s not “the nice peaceful leftists win by moral courage”

We get rounded up, put in camps and slaughtered.

Better pray it never comes to force of arms. We will lose.
