Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Bark louder, little dog.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Republicans do not trust women.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Not all heroes wear capes.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

So many bastards, so little time.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

In case you missed my racing results this weekend:
    https://twitter.com/emmeyekayeee/status/1054220464698998784

In the grand scheme of things we were sort of like Renault in F1. No threat to the mercs or ferraris, but for a 24′[1] boat that weighs 3500lbs, not bad. And we brought two new sailors racing and they can take over as skip for me when I can’t make it.

[1] Length at the waterline determines maximum speed for sailboats. The boat we’re passing in that pic is 11′ longer than us.

    @Mike J:
This is America. The only kind of racing we like is 200 mph billboards that go in circles for 7 hrs and the spectator stands are 1/4 full. Oh, and it’s still called “stock” car racing even though literally nothing is stock anymore. Aka NASCAR.

Not that I’m a functional sailor, just a pax once in a while on boats with sails. My kid has some basic sailing skills, that he learned through the California community college system. Yes the courses cost some money, but sigh… I doubt those sort of courses will ever come, back, and that’s ok, but Wow…

Another Republican is disowned by his family.

Writing in the Reno Gazette Journal yesterday, 12 members of Adam Laxalt’s family penned an op-ed strongly attacking their relative’s campaign for governor. The family, who identify themselves as lifetime Nevadans, say the current state attorney general’s campaign is misleading and inauthentic. At a recent campaign fundraiser, Laxalt framed himself as a homespun Nevadan posing with farm equipment and bales of hay, they wrote, and then lambasted the move as a cynical stunt.

“This event perfectly captures the Adam Laxalt candidacy: the phoniness of the setting and costumes, the pretense of folksiness used as a prop for Washington power players.”

“All this careful arrangement is meant to project an image of authenticity, of a deep family tie to Nevada and its history. But it’s all fake, all props paid for by someone else,” they wrote.

They went on to question his stance on immigration, saying his brief career as a practicing lawyer was a “train wreck”, and decry his positions on land conservation, healthcare and reproductive rights.

Mike Africa Sr’s parole is of even greater consequence for his family, and especially for his son Mike Africa Jr, who for 40 years has never seen both of his parents together or out of prison. He was born in a cell where his mother Debbie gave birth to him a month after she and her husband were arrested during the siege.

For three days Debbie kept her baby son concealed in the cell, hiding him under the covers, until she was forced to hand him over to prison guards. With both parents imprisoned until the eve of his 40th birthday, Mike Jr effectively became an orphan of the black liberation struggle.

He was raised by relatives and other members of Move and now lives with a family of his own outside Philadelphia.

“I’m having an out-of-body experience right now,” Mike Jr told the Guardian as he drove his father back to his home to be reunited with Debbie. “I’m floating over the top of the car.”

He said that this was what he had waiting for more than four decades – to be together for the first time with both his parents. “I’ve always hoped for this, but I never knew that it would happen,” he said.

Lily! Who’s a pretty girl? Lily, that’s who. I cried when she was diagnosed, and it broke my heart. But now it’s such a joy to see her sweet little self all fancy and adorable.

It’s a cool, brisk, but sunny morning. My lottery ticket matched exactly none of the winning numbers last night, so I’ll be working today. And that’s okay because I love what I do. But a few hundred million dollars might have been nice.
