Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I was promised a recession.

This fight is for everything.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

He really is that stupid.

T R E 4 5 O N

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

I really should read my own blog.

You cannot shame the shameless.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

In my day, never was longer.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Thursday Evening: “Cognitive Scientist” Has Bad Take

Assassination attempts on two Presidents, a Vice President, a former Secretary of State, a former Attorney General, a former CIA director, 2 members of Congress, a major cable news organization, a prominent Jewish philanthropist and a two-time Oscar winner is a 'minor event' now. https://t.co/dLfYOa5GGY

— Zedward D Wood Junior (@Zeddary) October 25, 2018

My first headline was “Fails Turing Test”, but what could be human than Pinker’s assumption that a “vindictive stunt” which doesn’t affect him is just a “minor event”?

In our interconnected age, you don’t need to be a professional journalist to join the Church of the Savvy…

Minor event, indeed. But I guess having a bomb mailed to your house in an attempt to kill you simply pales in comparison to having one of your constituents yell at you. I mean, it’s a wonder that McConnell survived that with only minor injuries to his ego.

    EFG UPDATE:

Wanted to take advantage of a fresh Open Thread.

Some you will have seen that our beloved efgoldman commented briefly on an earlier thread, and many joyfully welcomed him back to the jackal fold.

Not long after that, he phoned me. He sounds much stronger than he did a few weeks ago, which is great news. He’s been moved to a different facility — I think maybe more of a physical rehab place. I didn’t get the name of the place or a mailing address, and the only phone number I have is the generic switchboard one. Will try to get those details in the next few days to share privately with those of you who want to send a card or give him a call in the next few weeks.

He has a laptop and WiFi but uses it only when he is in a chair, not when he’s in bed. And because it’s hard for him to predict just when he’ll be where, he doesn’t know when he might show up to comment and converse. Also, if he’s been commenting and then suddenly disappears, not to worry — it means the nurses have decided it’s his bedtime. He’ll be back the next day!

He asked me to tell everyone that he misses us. He’s grateful for the get-well cards and notes and phone calls he got in the other hospital.

Just wanted to catch everyone up. Will let you know as soon as I can provide the new contact information.

The irony is that things have “improved” so much that BOMBS sent through the mail are so easily intercepted now. We have better defense capabilities having learned from the past.
Pinker is ignoring all the things that have to go right in order for this to be “nothing” and I do believe the Soros package did explode, I hope no one was hurt.

@David Evans: Okay, so there are worse things going on. That’s the equivalent of yelling “first world problems” anytime anyone raises an issue about something you personally don’t want to deal with or don’t agree with them on. Example: I say “School and prison food are atrocious” and you say “Hey, you’re not starving like people in Yemen.” Seriously, the only reason why these bombs are a minor event is because we spend tens of millions of dollars on security for high profile politicians, which we didn’t used to have to do. Unless Steven Pinker really thinks tens of millions of dollars being spent to avoid political mayhem and murder is inconsequential he really should exercise his option to stand in the corner and say nothing.

Really, was Sydney Greenstreet ever not good? Man could rattle off what was seemingly 12 pages of uninterrupted exposition without a hitch. Kind of boggles the mind to realize he was already 21 years old when the 19th century became the 20th.

Trivia: In The Maltese Falcon, there’s a rocking-type chair which naturally moves whenever anyone sits in it except Greenstreet. Prop folks had to fortify and stabilize it with plywood to accommodate Sydney’s avoirpdupois.

In this case he is being tone deaf, but it is surely true that there are worse things going on in the world than these amateurish bombs.

The bombs may not have been that big a deal- they didn’t do any damage, and it’s possible they weren’t well enough made to do any damage had they reached their intended recipients- but they get a lot of attention as a symptom of a serious problem. The intended victims were not chosen randomly; they were targeted specifically at people Donald Trump has pointed out as his enemies. Violence aimed at the enemies of the president* is a serious problem, even if it’s amateurish violence. The next person targeting Trump’s enemies may be competent enough to do some real damage.

Even following through on politically motivated threats of prosecuting opponents, like the current treatment of the FBI, threats of targeting Avenatti, etc, is HORRIBLE ENOUGH without bombs.

Pinker was a good researcher in his early work on language, but he is… what is the expression? way out of his lane. Has been for years. And he’s apparently getting more and more misogynistic and jerky.

Before I was aware Steve Pinker was a thing, I saw one of his books on the library’s new books shelf. It was on thinking or how the brain works, I don’t remember the title.

I did an old trick. I looked up something I knew about the in the index and checked what he had to say about it.

My topic was autism, and I immediately saw that he cherry-picked a very debateable and somewhat tangential idea about autism to base several pages of argument supporting whatever his thesis was.

It was amateurish, shallow and dishonest, and I was done with him. So not surprised to hear he said something facetious about this series of terrorist attacks.

By contrast, through his actions in Washington and his rhetoric from Iowa to New Hampshire and beyond, incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz has distinguished himself as a cutting figure in today’s politics. Lincoln, echoing the Gospel of Mark, cautioned us long ago that a house divided against itself cannot stand. And we believe that at this moment, we cannot afford such an approach.

@Lyrebird: Wikipedia says Pinker is Jewish, so not in the club, unless Trump decides to hire him for something that he deems Jewish people to be good at.

Anyway, Pinker is just plain wrong. Events like these are not like random sinkholes that open up and swallow a few random poor souls every year in swampy places.

Saying these bombs are minor is like saying a small outbreak of an infectious disease is minor. Or just a few white reactionary jerks deciding to shoot some cops on lunch break, or run down and kill a protester are minor. A minor event can well be a sing of major things to come if not attended to. A bigshot philosopher type should be able to squeeze out that much reason. No attempt at terrorism is minor, Though we blow up certain types out of proportion (if not by white reactionaries) and try ignore others (by white reactionaries).

I look at the actual problems facing this country and I think they are all solvable. The only real problems we are facing are self induced by Republicans.

Tinkering with the tax code to lessen income inequality can be done.

Better and more affordable healthcare can be done throw allowing people to buy into Medicare or Medicaid.

Wages can rise by indexing the minimum wage to inflation.

There is more, but I think they are all solvable, if we had the political will to solve them. We have the resources, as a country, to meet challenges.

The hard part is educating fellow citizens to see that this is the richest country on the planet and if tried to better allocate our resources, there ain’t nothing we can do. Too many people just see the struggle in their own lives, and not the bigger picture.

It’s not entirely new. The CATO Institute have had their tongue up his ass because they love his “You’ve never had it so good” message. It meshes very nicely with their own thesis that the little people should be damn grateful for anything the rich deign to give them, and should be shot on sight if they dare to complain.

    October 25, 2018 at 9:30 pm

Pinker needs to retract his statement if he wants to retain any credibility. Sure a few bombs that didn’t explode is a “minor” thing if body count math is your measure but wiser academics have pointed out that our society is held together by norms that are primarily symbolic. There is no tangible measureable thing called democracy. We can’t point to an unchangeable geographic feature called justice. These things work only because the vast majority if citizens believe they should. When someone with an ideological vendetta decides that leaders of one point of view should be threatened with extermination then the foundation of the intangibles that form the floor of our existence are threatened. It’s as if someone decided that Pinker’s tenure was an antiquated notion and threatened the Harvard administration unless he was removed. In the case of the bomb threats we see a determination to tear this country apart, not physically but with cold calculation nonetheless.

I sometimes think he’s a diehard fan of BF Skinner who got lost his sophomore year at college and all he needs to do is show up somewhere and pull out an elegant, well groomed cattle prod.

Until proven otherwise, I’m calling these out as the assassination attempts that they are…GOP, Republican, Trumpublican, whatever you want to tack onto that is fine, but they are GOP/Republican/Trumpublican assassination attempts.

I’m not sure people really ‘get’ where we are at, at this point in time:
    – pipe bombs being sent far and wide to Democratic officials and Trumpov critics
    – a GOP party hack shoved through to the Supreme Court, despite his mysteriously disappearing debt and quite plausible attempted rape, all to protect the GOP’s god-emperor down the road
    – Trumpov caught out running cover for a premeditated murder plot against a Washington Post journalist
    – Trumpov also caught out using an unsecured phone, with our enemies listening in (and therefore, manipulating him down the road at will)
    – Trumpov also blaming the media for attracting violent attacks, instead of blaming the attacker
    – Trumpov also praising an admitted violent attacker OF a journalist…with said attacker being a US congressman…

And of course, once Nov 7th rolls around, we’re going to hear more bullshit about millions of “illegals” voting.

Nothing to be done about it except beat on the GOP officials that enable it. Even once we take the House, they should not be allowed to hide from the consequences of what they’ve enabled/lied about here.

As a “PS”, I’ll add that John Kasich looks like he has decided it’s time to get back in the game and oppose Trumpov (as in primary challenge). He dropped a pair of videos today – there may have been more – but he’s clearly going to take up that fight shortly after the midterms. I’m sure he’s not thinking of the country first, but his challenge, and what it does to the GOP, is sorely needed if we’re ever going to get this country back on track.

    Penzys will not be cowed:

To those still supporting the President…
Someone posted this on our page and I believe it is worth sharing with you: “How incredibly biased your company is. I hope your conservative customers take a hard look at what you are really selling. You certainly do not want America to be great again. I am a proud Republican conservative and think our great president is making America great again!”

First off, let me say thanks for writing, to you and every other writer of the 30-40,000 comments I’ve read along these lines in the last two years. And yes, we are biased, biased in favor of the kindness at the heart of cooking. Through cooking we learn that when we take time to share kindness and care for those around us, the world becomes a better place. There was a time when this kindness was at home in both political parties. For now, at least, those days are past. Reading all these emails has been an education. At this point my response is:

“If you weren’t hurting anyone, you could believe whatever you wish and, for the most part, no one would say anything. But you are hurting people by what your support is keeping in power. Your support of racism, environmental devastation and the devaluation of our standing in the world is causing real harm not only to all of us right now, but to future generations as well.

“I understand how the realities our country is facing has been kept from you, and that your thoughts are no longer entirely your own. Doesn’t it seem odd to you how your mind can sincerely believe celebrities and business people should stay out of politics while at the very same time being equally sincerely excited about your celebrity businessman president? And I have no doubt that you love this country, but doesn’t it somewhere deep down bother you that we are turning our allies against us while empowering and enriching those who would do us harm?

“Somewhere along the way you gave up something inside you of who you are, something so fundamental to the functioning of democracy. Where once you would have held deep distrust for any candidate keeping their tax returns hidden, you came to see the hiding of the truth as admirable. Where once you saw loyalty as key to character, now it sure seems you are totally fine with third spouses, playboy models, and adult industry workers for all. I’ve known and enjoyed conservatives all my life, and I have to be honest with you and say this just does not sound like you.

“Please wake up. Your country needs you.”

The good news is that a whole lot of people who were supporting all of this just a short while ago are now waking up and rejecting the personality cult the Republican Party has become and are instead finding their own path.

    We’ve also seen posted recently:

“I didn’t choose to leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party chose to leave me.”

“I, and the rest of my family, were born and bred Republicans. Donated $$, canvased for votes (both door-to-door and by phone), worked the polls…. And THIS current Republican Party in no way resembles the party we supported. I really can’t view it as Republican.”

“I am a lifelong Republican, and have never been more embarrassed to say so. I am working diligently in my state of NH to get Democrats elected!”

“Don’t let the label you have slapped on yourself not reflect the truth of what you believe. I grew up in a Republican family, and heck, even my mom isn’t Republican anymore.”

The even better news is, if you choose to make the change, from everything we’ve seen, a whole lot of people will be really-really happy that you did and they will welcome you with wide open arms. As much as the President himself is pushing the false notion that those who oppose him are driven by hate and anger, this simply isn’t true. Hate doesn’t drive people to work for transgender rights, racial equality, or the welcoming of asylum seekers. Just the opposite really.

For anyone who has come around to realizing supporting the President and those enabling him was a mistake but are now worried about how they will be treated if they come out and make the change, please don’t be. Really kind people are going to be very happy for you. Right now it’s not about where you have been so much as about where you’ve arrived. And now’s a good time to arrive at a good place. I think you will find the food tasty here, too. Not a lot of lonely desktop taco salads and buckets of deep-fried fast food. A big part of the fun in celebrating all the cultures that actually make America great is the Cooks you meet and the foods they share. Dig in!

The election is now right around the corner. As much as we believe every night is a good night to cook, and there’s nothing better to do with your time than cooking, we’re good with re-heating something Tuesday 11.6.18 to give you time to get out to vote. With that in mind, and understanding some foods are even more tasty after a day or even two, through this weekend we are offering you your choice of a couple of really good Chili Powders Free with just a $5 purchase.

Our Chili 3000 is a great Chili Powder with a bright and exciting traditional flavor that is all you have come to expect Chili to be. Chili 9000 takes it one step further and hints at the world of Chili flavor that is out there, but is also very much at home in America where we value all the cultures that make us who we are. Tasty stuff. Cook Chili Sunday 11.4. Refrigerate. Eat Chili Tuesday 11.6. Save time to vote!

To see our Chili 3000: https://www.penzeys.com/online-catalog/chili-3000/c-24/p-73/pd-s

For Chili 9000 click here please: https://www.penzeys.com/online-catalog/chili-9000/c-24/p-103/pd-s

To get your in-store coupon for your choice of half-cup $7+ value Chili, just click this link: http://spices.penzeys.com/coupon.html

Online at penzeys.com, once you’ve reached $5 in spending, enter “11455C” in the apply code box at checkout for Chili 3000, “11950C” for Chili 9000. There’s no need to place the Chili in your basket, the codes will do that for you and for free!

And our full-size I Will Vote 11.6.18 refrigerator/bumper stickers are starting to be in short supply, but we do still have a quantity of the smaller lapel-sized stickers. These stickers are great for handing out while talking about the value in voting and just how important this election is. If you are part of an organized Get Out the Vote effort and think a bunch of these stickers would help, let us know at [email protected]. And yes, of course, these are available to whatever side you are on. Get Out the Vote is for everyone. Sooner or later the Republican Party is going to become something different. It would be good to have Cooks involved in what that is to be. Sooner rather than later please.

    Thanks for being Cooks,

    Bill Penzey

Liking this post, liking our FB page, and more importantly, leaving a comment helps offset the extra hurdles our posts face due to our “political” belief that cooking is what happens when you care about people. And especially with all that’s happened this week, please share this with anyone you know who could use a reminder that it is getting better. Plus please share the importance of voting. You are more respected than you imagine. You have the power to Get Out the Vote of those around you. Please use it. Thanks.

@Jeffro: Yeah, Kasich has been running for 2020 since he bombed out in ‘16.

He is most definitely not a moderate, he just looks like one in comparison to Trump.

He will give Republicans cover: they will use their support for him to repudiate Trump and look like they are reforming the GOP. But they will be furthering most of the same crap Trump dishes out. Just in a quieter voice.

@OGLiberal: Oh hey speaking of Fox…here are the top five news stories on Fox News dot com right now:

    5) ‘strange black pouches’ washing up on Carolina beaches aren’t plastic…they’re skate egg pouches (seriously! That’s what’s important today!!)
    4) newborn contracted deadly herpes virus from mom’s kiss
    3) master manipulator extorted Utah student before killing her (complete with pics of black male murdered and white female victim, natch)
    2) investigation narrows into Florida re: the pipe bombs (actual article says “Florida seen as region of interest”) Not a single word about how every one of the assassination attempts was directed at a prominent Democrat or public critic of Trumpov

    and

    you know it

    number one…

    1) “Questions arise over politics, motivation of caravan organizers”. Seriously. It’s like the longest Cavuto Mark ever!!

    1) I don’t think he’s done much of anything up until now. But he’s clearly gearing up to run at Trumpov, whether for his own gain or to bring the party down or what, I don’t know and it doesn’t really matter. I am completely supportive of his run, as it will much more clearly split the GOP than it is now with these mealy-mouthed #NeverTrumpers.

    2) Agreed and agreed.

    3) He will give half of the GOP cover…great! Let that half openly have it out with the half that worships their orange idol. Whatever it takes to help flush them all down the drain and put the adults back in charge.

Those bombs in the mail are a problem, though. She should do something. Thank goodness there’s some engaged workers at America’s mail sorting facilities. Maybe Fox could interview one of them- talk about unsung heroes. They’re not even armed!

They go to work there and they’re somewhat normal, but 6 months later they’re all foaming at the mouth ranting about shooting Mexicans. I don’t think we can even imagine how horrible it is to work there. They need to quit before it’s too late and they can’t be rehabilitated and re-enter society and lead productive lives. It’s too late for Nielsen. She’ll have to work at Fox.

@HumboldtBlue: Waaah, I’m not getting my money’s worth out of this blog. It’s not just you, but the number of complainers who are apparently clueless about how browser Autofill can be customized so no typing of either nym or email is involved and various other complaints are getting on my already hair-triggered nerves. The blog is old and borked. Deal with it.

This blog is my lifeline to sanity in these insane times, and I would put up with a hell of a lot more trouble to keep coming here for emotional and moral support, and will donate generously to the redesign set for after the election.

Well, I went to a Democratic dinner tonight and they’re very fired up. We have a very young state legislature candidate who has just been such fun to watch over the past year. He’s gotten so good at this! I feel like I knew he had potential but I haven’t heard his speech in months and he’s 10x better than he was then. He has a full time job at a furniture factory here in addition to campaigning – sometimes his mother drives him to events so he can nap on the way because his district covers so much ground. You wonder why people do this, what keeps them going. They’re extroverts so they get jazzed up by other people, but it’s just so much TIME. I don’t think I’m that generous. I would want time off.

Just look at all the stupid & ill-considered knee-jerk reactions to his tweet on this thread by (presumably) intelligent people.
