‘Tire rims & anthrax’ watch:
I swear Florida could be voting between ice cream and a kick to the head and the results would be 50.5%-49.5%.

Adam — who lives there, remember — says both the Senate and gubernatorial races will be going to mandatory recounts. Hopefully under adult supervision.
Also on the plus side:
1.5 million felons will get back their right to vote as Floridians pass Amendment 4. https://t.co/hpXk2jqQin#Midterms2018 #ElectionNight #Election2018 pic.twitter.com/TGRyamREv2

No matter what the final tally, we need to get a new, comprehensive, nation-wide Voting Rights Act in place… yesterday!
Imagine if there were a law whereby states with a history of racial discrimination in voting had to demonstrate to federal officials that moving a polling place or making voting changes wouldn't make minority voters worse off. https://t.co/AyS81nA53L

Silver lining side, all those new young (would-be) voters are seeing, in real time, just how important participating at *all* levels of government is…
Baud
Threads are coming fast and furious tonight.
chopper
and kobach goes down. fuck that guy!
Jim, Foolish Literalist
So is that nine new threads in the last ten minutes ?
guachi
WI-01 called. Ironstache lost by 15. I feel for candidates who put months and months into their campaigns and come up short.
zhena gogolia
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
Something like that.
Baud
@guachi: Damn. That’s really bad.
SiubhanDuinne
I do not know who Mike Jung is, but that tweet is straight out of Prufrock.
Mike in NC
Been to Florida so many times we don’t need to guess the election results there.
bluehill
Now need to pile on additional house seats to offset any squishy Ds in red districts.
James E Powell
@guachi:
Losing by 15 is not coming up short; it’s getting curb-stomped. I somehow had the impression that was going to be a close one. What happened?
SenyorDave
Blackburn won, she must be in the running for stupidest member of the Senate.
guachi
Luria just shot way ahead in VA-02. Spanberger also up strongly in VA-07. Well, 2,000 votes with 97.4% reporting.
Mary G
James E Powell
@SiubhanDuinne:
It’s William Carlos Williams.
MazeDancer
For unknown reasons there was a debate on line about whether or not Elaine Luria won.
She won.
Very excited.
Doesn’t make up for Beto and Heidi losing. But still good news.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@SenyorDave: She’ll have to fight Ron Johnson, but I think she’s meaner
West of the Rockies
That WCW poem has always struck me as a passive-aggressive asshole poem.
Suzanne
Other than my own races, Arizona Senate and CD-9, my heart is all in for Beto. Come on, Beto. I adore you.
JGabriel
@SiubhanDuinne: I do not know who Mike Jung is, but that tweet is straight out of Prufrock.
William Carlos Williams, actually. Prufrock was TS Eliot.
Major Major Major Major
@West of the Rockies: me too.
bluehill
Wonder which Mittens will show up in the Senate for Utah. He could be the next Flake or Corker, but upside would be McCain.
Old Dan and Little Ann
Goddamn Fucking cruz!
Major Major Major Major
Congrats to Kansas on electing their first cage fighter to Congress.
Rex
TX called for Cruz on NBC. Very strange…they had just started with a reporter at Cruz or Beto HQ to talk about surprisingly strong Beto showing in Harris County; then abruptly pre-empted to call race for Cruz. Really bizarre.
JWR
PBS calling it for Cruz. (23% reporting.) F*ck!
MobiusKlein
I have a great idea:
National standards for polling place times, for how many polling devices per likely voter, for how security of the ballot works, and about 20 other things too.
The waiting in line for hours is B.S. for a rich and powerful nation.
Baud
@Rex:
@JWR:
Beto should be proud but he was never ahead in any poll ever.
JGabriel
FYI, Y’all:
538.com’s Real-Time Forecast has us back up to a near 90% chance of taking the House.
And an average gain in the modeling of +33D.
bluehill
@JWR: With 23% reporting? I thought it was going to be close.
Mandarama
@SenyorDave: I’m 100% confident she will be the stupidest AND the most camera-hungry.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@bluehill: He could be the next Flake or Corker, but upside would be McCain.
I think he’ll be Flake, lots of sad face and no votes. He has to keep the trump base friendly for the dream of the Mormon Kennedys
chopper
@Baud:
beto should be proud that he made it this close in fucking texas of all places.
wasabi gasp
Wow! Three step-on posts in a row. That’s a big pool of sweat.
Major Major Major Major
@JGabriel: that model was behaving very very strangely tonight.
japa21
Does look like a probable pickup in IA-03. Not King’s district. That race is neck and neck but way early.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Pete Session goes down in TX, Dem pick up in MI. And the magic number is…. 10.
Gin & Tonic
And NBC just called it for House control.
MazeDancer
NBC projects Dems will control the House.
Hope everyone still voting in CA stays in line.
Dems get the gavels. Very good news.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I gave quite a bit of money to candidates who, it looks like, are gonna come up short.
I don’t regret a dime of it.
Baud
@Gin & Tonic:
@MazeDancer:
That’s the most important thing. Firewall for two years.
Gin & Tonic
@bluehill: Mittens will kiss Trump’s ass. Take that to the bank
guachi
First upset was a big one in NY-11. Democrats take a tough district on Staten Island.
Suzanne
@chopper: Agreed. Beto has done an absolutely heroic job here.
His political career isn’t done. I hope.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
@James E Powell: it’s a red district.R+5.
Mai Naem mobile
Menendez kept his seat. We apparently like our maybe crooks too. Watch Trumpov and Lindsay go after him again.
MobiusKlein
@MazeDancer: Silly MazeDancer, in California, we fund our polling places such that lines are not stupid like in certain (ugh, Jehovah strike me down for I blaspheme) dumbfuckistan places in flyover country.
Gin & Tonic
@SiubhanDuinne: That’s William Carlos Williams.
MomSense
I fucking hate Rmoney.
bluehill
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Well, probably won’t matter now, but looks like Rs will pick up seats in the senate so Mitt can cast meaningless votes and still look mavericky. But house good. Need those g-ships though.
Baud
While tonight won’t be as dominating as we would have liked, my hope is that this wakes up the still unwoken for 2020.
dr. bloor .
Heitcamp toast,
JWR
@Baud:
Damn straight. But there’s always hope, because it seems to have been a Beto/Cruz flip-flop all evening. (By the way, PBS called WV for the R an hour ago, only to re-call it for Manchin.)
japa21
King is down in IA. Not many votes counted but I just like saying King is down. Hope it stays that way.
JGabriel
@Major Major Major Major:
Nate says he re-calibrated the model to more ‘conservative’ settings – i.e., he made it a little less over-fluctuating in response to incoming data.
Mary G
Chris Murphy cruised to victory in Connecticut. He was my first monthly donation, because he was one of the few candidates I didn’t unsubscribe to after the 2012 election. When I first started giving to him, he had a huge NRA target on his back for his refusal to forget the six-year-olds and teachers killed at Sandy Hook. What a difference 15 months have made.
Steve in the ATL
@MazeDancer: how about those of us not voting but just eating dinner in California? Do we have to wait in line too? I’m hoping this founder wasn’t caught in the Salton Sea earlier today.
Just how catching up on the news. Sounds like the senate is going as badly as expected but the house is going to be ok.
Suzanne
I have intestinal distress.
Come on, Kyrsten.
Baud
@japa21: That would make me rethink my feelings toward Iowa.
lgerard
@MomSense:
By March 1st Mitt and trump will be feuding. I can’t wait to see what nickname the orange asshole comes up with for Mitt
WaterGirl
@Suzanne: I am crushed about Beto. I was sure he would win, and he certainly deserved to win.
Mary G
OKLAHOMA:
Republicans screwing over teachers is coming back to bite them bigly.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
Pretty close to forecast.
538 had forecasted +36 seats and Harry Enten had forecasted +32
Baud
@Mary G: So we’re overperforming in OK and KS. Who would have guessed?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@lgerard: I think trump likes nothing better than humiliating Republicans who ever criticized. trump will go out of his way to make Mitt grovel in public. “How’s your boy, Mitt? Is he planning on running for office? Isn’t that interesting….”
lamh36
Wait…they called TX for Beto with only 30% of the vote in?
Quinerly
@guachi: brutal.
Baud
@lamh36: Called for Cruz.
Mai Naem mobile
@bluehill: Mitts is a big fat opportunistic coward and a POS. He won’t even pull a Flake unless it’s totally focus group tested
Emma
@lamh36: Yeah. Which is why I’m waiting to wail until the damn count reaches 80% of the vote.
Steve in the ATL
@Baud: d’oh!
Suzanne
@WaterGirl: I always ought Beto was a long shot, but he is definitely the one candidate that I felt the most excited about. And not just because he’s adorable.
lgerard
Antonio Delgado moving out to a 54-44 lead in NY 19 with 24% in
flip!
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
@WaterGirl: In 40 polls spanning the past year he only ever led in one.
the silver lining: he is now free to run for president in 2020.
zhena gogolia
@lgerard:
That’s my guy!
lamh36
@Baud: Sorry…yeah, I meant Cruz…
hey FPs anyone around to delete that comment
Quinerly
Scott Walker loses.
WaterGirl
@David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch: He has already said he won’t be doing that. He promised his family this 2 years and said if he didn’t win, it would be back to El Paso for Beto and family.
Do we know about Cordray in Ohio yet?
Baud
@Quinerly: That’ll make a lot of people happy.
Steve in the ATL
@Quinerly: and Omnes is seeing a doctor about an erection that lasts more than four hours
mdblanche
@lgerard: And by March 2 Mitt will show trump his belly and piddle himself.
Ohio Mom
@WaterGirl: Nope on Cordray et al but Sherrod Brown was re-elected. How the same people who consistently vote for Sherrod can also consistently vote for Republicans, I don’t get.
Quinerly
@Baud: @Steve in the ATL: ?
lgerard
Anthony Brindisi up 53-46 in NY 22 with 60% in
flip!
joel hanes
@James E Powell:
Ironstache turned out not to be a very good candidate.
He had a good first story, but never got beyond the “who I am” thing.
His campaign was an amateur effort.
Turns out that politicians need certain career skills,
which are different from the requirements for ironworkers.
I gave him far more money that I want to admit, early on, but nothing I saw from him later made me hopeful.
tobie
@Mary G: I feel like Chris Murphy has played the role of the moral center of the Democrats in the Senate. It could be because of his passion for gun control after Sandy Hook but I also felt he was an incredibly strong and honest voice when drumming up popular opposition to the the Republican effort at Obamacare repeal. In the past six months, I’ve noticed that he’s been the first to point out what we or our allies are doing in the Middle East. A firebrand he’s not, but he has authenticity on his side.
Redshift
With our various “firsts” tonight, I’m reminded of a quote (WaPo columnist, maybe) about last year’s Virginia elections, which went something like this:
“The House of Delegates now looks more like Virginia. On second thought, actually the Democrats look almost exactly like Virginia, and the Republicans are almost entirely a party of old white men.”
